Right now I'm only working out four days a week. I'll bump that up over the next few weeks, and I've only been doing this since the beginning of the year. Day 1: 30 minute Ab workout & 20 minutes of yoga Day 2: 30 minute upper body weight workout & as much elliptical as I can do Day 3: Tae Bo Day 4: 45-60 minutes of whatever I want to do (above items or walking or pilates) |

Right now I am starting slow. I am so glad you asked this because I was going to start another post with the question : WHEN does the pain stop??? Right now I am doing treadmill for 15 minutes/day. I did day #2 today. I tried this in the past but always stopped after day #2 because the next day I hurt. I mean HURT. Body aches, muscle hurts (ab area). I know that the pain means that the muscles are being worked, but how long does it last?? I just want to lay on the couch all day because I am so sore (and obviously so out of shape...) I am attempting to work my way up to at least 1/2 hour/day. Just starting slow the first week with 15 minutes, and every week adding an additional 5-10 minutes. I am trying to work through the aches, but don't want to take any pain reliever, and refuse to give up. I also have Wii Fit that I will eventually add, hopefully at least 15 minutes/day as soon as I get the treadmill down. Oh - and the treadmill is on the highest incline it has, so I am walking an incline - kind of a fast waking, not a running, but not a leisurely walk either.

M,W,F 40 minutes of Pilates Almost every day walk at least 40 minutes. M,W,F lift 2 lb weights to strengthen arms and firm up wings I occasionally (not often enough) ride my bike for an hour and swim for an hour. In the summer I swim a lot.

I do a cardio workout before work nearly every day of the work week. I miss a day here and there. The workout is around 30 minutes on the treadmill - give or take 5-10 minutes depending on how I'm running on time - usually running between 2-3.5 miles a day at a pace of around 10:30 per mile (i.e. SLOW!) If I have less time, I use a 1.5-2% incline to get a harder workout in a shorter time or run intervals. On the weekends, I run one or both of the days. I try to do a longer run - 4 or 5 miles - on one of the weekend days. Sometimes I do high-rep calisthenics at home with 8lb dumbbells. I need to add a day or two of circuit training to work on muscle tone. cj/

1boymom~ If you are feeling a lot of aches and pains there are two things you might want to try. 1. Stretch stretch stretch. Do some fun stretches before AND after your workout. 2. Decrease your intensity- I would lower the incline on your treadmill- (higher=harder) and maybe decrease your speed (you didn't mention what your mph was). Walking a little longer at a lower intensity is just as effective and won't make you sore so you will be more likely to walk again tomorrow. You can gradually increse the intensity as your fitness level increases. Be gentle on your body and it will thank you. If you have any more q's feel free to pm me. As mentioned on another thread I do 30 min or more on the treadmill three days a week, 20 minutes of strength training two days a week, saturdays I do whatever I feel like- a walk outside/pilatees/yoga/tae-bo/dancing or just extra cleaning - Sundays are my day of rest.

I wish I knew what the MPH is. I am guessing I am walking around 1 mile in the 15-minute time period. Probably between 3/4 and 1 mile. The mileage thing on the treadmill is not working (I have no idea what happened to it - probably a loose wire....) I will stretch tomorrow beforehand and see if that helps. And maybe decrease the incline too. Thanks!

The incline is going to work muscles that you don't normally use in your daily walking and moving about. That will contribute to the pain you're feeling. It's not just the intensity but the way it positions/works the muscle that will cause pain. I would start lower incline and work up both in speed and resistance/incline. cj/

You're muscles are screaming in protest. If it's to the point you cannot move, then decrease your intensity. I stuck with it the first two weeks without changing a thing, by this week, I am fine and ready to increase the intensity next week. I want to feel that burn! ETA: By intensity, I mean increasing my reps, weights, time, etc. Everything factors in! |

Just started a routine. Since I'm only in the beginning, it's not too bad. Walk 30 minutes on M and W. Run 1 minute, walk 2 minutes--10 times on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Rest on Sunday. It's an 8-week training. I want to run or run/walk a 5K in March. I run outside...and it's been pretty cold lately. I just hope I can keep up with it--next week doesn't look quite as fun!

3-4 days a week I do Jazzercise (which is 30 min cardio & 30 min stretching/strengthening with weights) I have added a 1 day a week yoga class to see if I like it. I like it ok, but my sweaty palms are slipping on the stupid mat making downward dog and those types of poses difficult. I've got to get that figured out because it's frustrating! Lisa

I do yoga nearly every day for 30 -60 minutes. We have a Schwinn Airdyne (sp?) and weight bench, free weights, etc. in the basement. I don't use them often but want to incorporate them into my day. I absolutely love yoga, though. For me, it's the perfect exercise.

My regular workout routine averages about 80 minutes, five days a week. MWF - 30 minutes of cardio, stretching, pushups, sit-ups, balance work and weights. Mondays includes 15 minute abs class. T - 45 minutes cardio then stretching, pushups, sit-ups and balance work. Th - 45 minutes cardio, often split up into 30 and 15 minute bits due to 15 minute abs class, then also pushups, stretching and balance work. But I had knee surgery in early January and am still recovering from that, so I'm doing what I can and what my PT will let me. I'm still doing abs class two days a week. I try to do upper body weights and push-ups, stretching and balance work on those days as well. Other days, I'm doing what I can as far as cardio (but can only do upper body stuff right now) and working in pushups, stretching and balance work. I'm also doing my leg exercises once or twice a day seven days a week as instructed by my PT. Those take a while and are incredibly boring, so I usually do them at home and watch a DVD. Once I "graduate" from PT, I'm going to work hard to get back to my five day a week schedule, which will include getting back into Thursday night kickboxing class right after abs. Yeah for percussive therapy! |
