They're Harvesting The Grapefruit...

Across the street from my house. It's done by hand. Each worker has a large bag they wear slung over their shoulder to hold the grapefruit. According to what I read online, the bags weigh as much as 55 pounds when they are full. They also have to tote around 20 foot ladders to reach the top of the trees.

Grapefruit trees have long thorn like growths on every branch. They are very, very sharp and I know this for a fact. We have a grapefruit tree in my backyard.

Just something to ponder the next time you are enjoying a juicy Florida grapefruit.

I didn't but they are well supplied with both water and some more potent beverages.

It didn't happen today but sometimes we'll see them playing soccer during their breaks. Like they don't get enough exercise doing all that picking!

You can tell you are where it is warm. It is the coldest day so far this year here, so I can not agree with the best time of the year!!!! Enjoy your sunshine and send some this way!

We visited a cousin in California several years ago who had grapefruit trees in her yard. She let us take whatever we wanted so we just picked up a bunch that were on the ground. For the rest of the trip they were rolling all over our van. They were delicious, though.

I love grapefruit too! How cool is that? Having your own fruit trees in your yard or even across the street. Wow...that would be nice. ~Lisa

I love the smell of fresh grapefruit! A former boss sent some from his home in California and the box had the best aroma....

Can you smell them in the air? That would be close to Heaven for me. I love the smell of grapefruit and to have it wafting through the air would be wonderful!

Not so much when they are picking them but in a couple of months when the trees blossom the smell is intoxicating.

One thing that is odd down here, the town we live in has a juice processing plant. When they are really working it, the smell of oranges is every where. Instead of it being a pleasant odor, it's really enough to make you barf. I guess too much of anything can be a bad thing.

Just a few more weeks until Spring Training!!! I lived on the South Shore my whole life (Quincy, Brockton, Plymouth) until we moved down here in 2004.

I just tried the broiled grapefruit recipe. My oh my, it was delicious. Unfortunately that will probably be my first and last serving of that. I'm on coumadin and grapefruit is not recommended. It increases the effects of the drug. Bummer!
