And who do you work for to know this 'inside' information? |

Yes I work for the Federal Government. I am nobody important nor do I have any influence over anything. I have no power or authority of any kind...well I do have a little bit of limited authority in certain situations LOL...but don't worry I can't come and do anything to do...not that I would! And what's telling a little secret between a few friends? You guys won't tell right? Don't worry I am not divulging any secrets or anything. At this point I believe the information may be public if you are dealing with a tax advocate or tax relief person.

The same place the last money came from --a deficit. Hey I didn't say I agreed with it! I am usually against this type of thing. It's like charging a Visa card for my grandchildren to pay back. However in this economy we have to get something circulating again. I don't know yet if I think it's a good or bad idea. All I know is that people are hurting very badly right now. And more will be hurting before it gets any better.

I heard that we were just going to get a tax credit. Like they were going to take less out of our paychecks and it only comes to about 20.00 bucks for me per pay period. That is not much.Do you think that that is the tax deal or do you really think we are going to get money. We want to put some flooring down in our house. We can not stand our carpet!

Just out of curiosity for those who don't take it--why would you not take something that you will be paying back? It's like me and Jane Doe and Joe Blow signing loan papers but only me and Jane spend the money and Joe still has to help pay it back? I understand that "charging" things at a high interest rate is not the best plan however if it's going to be done and you will have to help pay it back why not take it? At least take it and give it to your favorite charity or someone you know who really is suffering and needs it. You names are on the loan and your are responsible for paying part of it back.

| Man could I use it. In the last year I've had to replace my washer, dryer, water heater, stove, riding mower, tires and $1200.00 car work. I think I helped stimulate the economy enough so I'd love some money to put toward my debt! I sure hope nothing else breaks very soon........it's very depressing.

My hubby and I would take the check, for sure! If we were to get $3K or more, we would pay off $1K in bills, spend $1K on our property and put $1K (or more) in the bank for rainy day.

Anna I doubt anyone here would refuse a stimulus check, I think they're saying the same thing my boss said, that they didn't receive it last time around because they made too much $ so they don't expect to get one this time either...

I'll take it but I don't think it's the correct way to approach the nations problem. I wasn't "for" the last one either. I'll bank it (not what they want me to do) but I spent all of the last one.

From what I understand everyone who gets some sort of check will get one including people on Social Security. I am not sure about welfare and I don't know exactly what "everyone who receives a payroll check" means.

I don't remember hearing about another tax stimulus check, but seemed to recall a recent speech where Obama said most folks would get a $1000 tax credit. Did a bit of checking and found the text from the 01/08/09 speech and found this quote: "Finally, this recovery and reinvestment plan will provide immediate relief to states, workers, and families who are bearing the brunt of this recession. To get people spending again, 95% of working families will receive a $1,000 tax cut—the first stage of a middle-class tax cut that I promised during the campaign and will include in our next budget." The full text of the speech can be found at: Text of Obama Speech on the Economy - Politics and Government * US * News * Story - CNBC.com The quote is from the last paragraph on page 2 of the speech. The country needs jobs not checks. I'm definitely for the road and bridge repair projects they are talking about. Michigan has just announced we have 10.6% unemployment. Other states seem to be slowly following our lead, so be prepared. I don't believe there will be any more "stimulus checks". It didn't work the first time (making an impact on the economy ,that is) and Obama has repeatedly said that it would be tax cuts if congress agrees. |

They should issue these "stimulus checks" in the form of debit cards, so you are forced to spend them, not bank them. That is what they are saying needs to be done with them. Oh well, we'll have to wait and see, I guess.

Yes it will be a check to each person or couple. You can call your local Tax Advocate they are already telling people about it. We should have the checks in February.

[Update Jan 22 2008] The Senate and the House are currently debating the economic stimulus package and included rebates. The House version of Obama's "Making Work Pay" tax credit would give workers making $75,000 per year or less the full $500 tax credit; couples with incomes up to $150,000 a year would receive a $1,000 credit. The plan would also provide a temporary $2,500 tax credit to help pay for college. It would boost the earned income tax credit for low-income workers and permit them to receive the entire $1,000 per child tax credit as a refund in 2009-10 if they make as little as $8,500 a year and wouldn't otherwise qualify. As expected, Republicans are fighting the extra spending on the Stimulus and TARP packages, but they should clear both get congressional approval by next month. ** Subscribe (free) via Email or RSS to get the latest updates on the economic stimulus payments** In a recent poll on this site, 80% of respondents said that the next economic stimulus check would be mailed out by March 2009. Unfortunately they were wrong on two counts. Firstly, there is no second economic stimulus check. Rather the Obama administration plans to hand out tax rebates to approximately 150 million workers making less than $200,000. The tax breaks would be worth $500 for individuals and $1,000 for couples. Secondly, any relief for consumers won’t be available till March/April at the earliest as the new President tries to get his near $800 Billion stimulus package (over 2 years) through congress. President Obama’s advisers said that they were searching for a way to get that credit into Americans’ pockets quickly to help stimulate spending, but would not duplicate the rebate checks sent last year. Instead the administration plans to include about $300 billion in tax cuts, or 40% of the total economic recovery program (stimulus package), for workers and businesses. The tax cuts would be implemented by altering tax-withholding rules, so that workers would see an immediate increase in their take-home pay. Senior Democrat officials have acknowledged that the economic package would not be ready for President Obama’s signature immediately after his inauguration on Jan. 20, as they once hoped. Instead it will be heavily scrutinized by house and senate members to ensure bipartisan support of the package. Proponents of more government spending (via fiscal policies) have said that additional delays will send the economy into a depression by mid-year if no action is taken as soon as the new President is sworn in, and want the stimulus package to be even larger. Republicans, who have generally opposed further stimulus packages and rebate checks, favor tax relief and tax credits as part of the economic measure and said Congress should consider reducing the 25 percent income tax rate to 15 percent. The Obama administration has also pulled back on its campaign rhetoric to increase taxes for the rich by not trying to repeal Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans sooner (they are due to expire in 2010). Overall, I think the Obama administration is right in its efforts to focus on job creation and stimulating the economy over the long term. I also agree that issuing stimulus or rebate checks (even if there were near $5000 as initially rumoured) would have done little in the medium to long term to revive economic growth. It would have been a populist, short term impact, move which I am glad the Obama administration has decided not to pursue. Tax cuts are a better solution, and will also help win support from congressional Republicans to ensure the ultra-large stimulus package is passed sooner rather than later.
