Unless you get him fixed, I would think you'll always have this problem. Males constantly have to 'mark' their terrority. Once we had our dog 'fixed', we didn't have any more problems with that. Also, do you crate him? You really need to crate him and when you remove him from the crate, immediately take him outside, (using the same phrase all the time, i.e., 'go outside?') praise him when he does his business, give him a treat when he comes in. After he eats, do the same thing and also after playing with him. And then just intervals during the day. Good luck! |

Personally, I think crating is a bad idea. I know some people swear by it, so I'm not trying to start an argument. I think crating can lead to making it too easy to neglect your dog. Training and socializing him is an important part of making him part of your family. I think crating makes them feel excluded from the "pack."

I have seen crating dogs/puppies work very well with certain breeds and certain families/lifestyles. That being said, crating is not for every dog. I agree that fixing OP's puppy will help, but the pup also needs a routine and lots of positive reinforcement. I have trained all my pups with a combination of puppy pads, taking outside every 2 hours (timed after eating meals), lots of praise and small treats when they do their business outside. The key is consistency and praise - your pup WANTS to please you. Also, most dogs when trained to go outside will not go back to having accidents inside, because they really are more comfortable doing business outside.

It is not that he doesn't go outside cause he loves going outside. He is outside at least every hour. He does sleep in a crate at night and right when he gets up, we take him out. I will try to puppy pads and I have a appointment to get him fixed. We didn't get him fixed early because we thought we were going to use him for breeding but we decided against that since we are so busy. Thanks so much for all your help.

Positive reinforcements for peeing in the right spot. Nothing for accidents. Please don't rub his nose in it or yell at him. To protect your home you might try belly bands until he catches on. Good luck!
