Hmmmm......the boxes were way bigger when I sold them for $1.25 per box. DH just told me about this last night and we agreed not to purchase any this year. I think I'd just rather give cash to a local troop.

We bought 8 boxes. I've been a girl scout leader, a cookie mom & had 2 girls participate. It's their main fundraiser and a great organization to support!

I think I will only buy one box but will give the troop themselves a couple of extra dollars. They don't make that much per troup per box that they sell. We sold cookies last year. Getting the orders was easy. Trying to get the money and deliver them... well... I don't think I will ever do it again!

I remember when I sold them for $1.25 per box.

The Girl Scouts got .12 per sale back then...

I don't think the percentage is much better now, either!

I wish the Girl Scouts found something better (healthier) to sell. Girl Scout cookies are so passe. We just finished a unit on Healthy Habits, and then we go out plugging not-so-healthy items. It doesn't seem right.

I'm pretty sure our troop gets $.75 per box now

The first few years I was cookie mom the troops each got 50 cents a box. A couple years ago they raised it to 52 cents. It wasn't that much harder to figure, but I sure did like the neat round numbers! I can't remember the percentages, a bunch goes to them at a national level, then a bunch goes toward the costs associated with them - baking, distribution, etc.

I agree with another poster that I'd rather just give a monetary donation to a local troop. I realize prices have gone up, but I think that 12 teeny cookies for $3.50 is ridiculous.

I was the cookie mom for 2 years, many years ago. If I remember correctly, our troop only received about 15% and the Local Council received 40-50%.

Honestly, if you want to help the troop, just make a donation directly to the troop..

You're old LOL! $1.25 a box? Did you walk uphill (both ways) in the snow to school and pay a nickel for a steak dinner and a beer?

A sign of the times! I will still buy a couple of boxes. I mean it's no different than anything else.

Also I will donate some extra money after discovering from you girls that they don't get very much.

P.S. What I hated the most was the Council putting an "unofficial" quota on the troop.

Abby's troup gets .56 per box, and I was kind of pissed to see the story about how they're decreasing the # of cookies per box *after* we had already started selling them this year. I kind of wish we'd have been told so that we could let the cookie buyers know instead of just springing it on them when we deliver.

I didn't walk uphill or pay a nickel, but when I sold them for $1.25/box, you were still encouraged to go door-to-door selling them!
And, while I'm getting older--I think the cookies when they were $1.25/box tasted better than the $3.50/box cookies; now they all tend to leave almost a film like coating in your mouth, the chocolate tastes fake and the cookies just aren't all that good IMHO.(but I still buy a few boxes becauses, well, I know what it was like when I sold cookies!)

As a girl scout leader, I can tell you that this and the nut sales we did are the main fundraisers for our troop. We do get at least 50 cents a box with a sliding scale going up a few cents once a certain number of boxes are sold.

As a mom and a leader, I tell the girls that everything in moderation. We can eat healthy most of the time and allow ourselves a treat.

As to the amount of cookies per box goes, it is just like the supermarket. Keebler does not call you personally to tell you their amount went down. As a consumer, just look at the ounces and get the most bang for your buck.

I believe the Thin Mints and the shortbread have the most cookies per box.

Thanks for supporting the girls! And if you do not want to buy a box for yourselves - you can buy a box and donate it to the military or other organization the troop picked.

Of course I walked uphill both ways. Had to work up an appetite for that nickel steak dinner & beer!

I buy 1 box per year. It doesn't matter how many cookies are in the box. I haven't had a GS cookie I have liked in many years. I just let DH and the kids "dig in" in the box. I don't eat any. I don't see the cookie fundraiser any different than the elementary schools touting "nutrition and fitness" in health lessons and then serving the crap they do at lunch. It's really absurd

Now that you mention it, I think ours went to to 56 cents not 52 cents. I just know if was not an even number and it drove me nuts!

We always did the booth sales, too. The girls absolutely loved doing booth sales. The'd be so excited. You'd be suprised how many people just give them a couple bucks instead of buying the cookies (which is fine - we thanked them and put it in our troop fund). What I hate, though, are the rude people who walk by and make comments to the girls like - "they're overpriced" or "too expensive." Or "I can get more Oreos for the same money." They are little girls! They don't set the price. A simple, 'no thanks' or 'I bought some from my neighbor would suffice!'

OK, off my soapbox - just a pet peeve having been there and seen the girls faces when someone made comments.

I think it's more than $3.50 a box here. I dont mind a few dollars to them but it is a turn off when they almost pounce on you when you in and out of the store.

I ordered 10 boxes, and honestly didn't notice 'less' cookies in the boxes, although I did notice that the Caramel delites are 'smaller' cookies now.

I can live with 2 to 4 fewer cookies in a box, I only buy them once a year and it's not as though I need any to begin with...everyone in our family loves Thin Mints! That's the only kind we usually buy.

Also I recall that I used to carry a hot potato in each hand to keep warm while walking to school uphill both ways in the snow...

Girl Scout cookies are $4.00 per box here. The profit is based on a sales average:

Troop/Group per girl average of 1-149 packages earns 70˘ per package.
Troop/Group per girl average of 150-174 packages earns 75˘ per package.
Troop/Group per girl average of 175-299 packages earns 80˘ per package.
Troop/Group per girl average of 300+ packages earns 85˘ per package.

Well I guess if it comes down to less cookies per package or raising the price, I am glad with what they have done. My daughter actually sold more this year than the last 4 yrs she has been selling. The other girls in her troop have not had the same luck, sales are wayyyy down in general. I know we made 50 something cents the past couple years for each box sold. Not sure what it is this year.

We only do 2 fundraisers per year, which I for one greatly appreciate. Neither myself, nor dh have ANY family to sell to, so it's strictly co-workers since our neighbors are wackos. We also pay $5/month dues. The girls do at least 1 event each month (not always at cost), and a couple bigger trips in warmer months will the big year end trip last. All of the funding comes straight from our cookie money. This year the girls are going to a weekend trip to:

Club Getaway - Schools/Camps/Scouts - Girl Scout Weekends - Connecticut Sport, Fitness & Adventure Weekend Resort, Berkshire Mountains

You guys are making me feel very old. I think the cookies were 50 cents a box when I sold them back in 1967 to 1969. I remember someone buying 12 boxes and me thinking they must be rich. lol I might be wrong about the price but you know that when you get old the first thing that goes is your memory. lol

Wow, you must have a Great Council. Our troop (county) changed councils this year. Last year we got around 50 cents a box. This year it breaks down like this and it really sucks!

Less than a 100 box average per girl 26 cents a box
100-124 box average per girl 28 cents a box
125-149 box average per girl 32 cents a box
150-174 box average per girl 34 cents a box
175-199 box average per girl 35 cents a box
200-249 box average per girl 36 cents a box
250 or more average 37 cents a box

we have 13 girls and we average boxes a girl 125 a girl. This is our only fundraiser to help pay for our trips, patches and other stuff. We don't like having to nickel and dime the parents to death. Me and my co-leader pay for a lot of the stuff ourselves.

the girl I take home from school just asked me if I would buy a box. She said she was *assigned* 2,500 boxes to sell and that each girl is *aiming* to sell that many boxes. I thought she was kidding but her mom confirmed it. OMG! 2500 boxes EACH? Yikes...things have changed since I sold them as a kid. I think I sold 20 boxes tops and that was to my family (even in the "good ol' days I wasn't allowed to go door to door which I am glad they discourage now)

Holy Moly! Last year when I was still the cookie mom, our girls were only assigned 110 boxes each. And only about half the girls got that! That was hard to attain! I don't know what their goal is this year, but 2500 is insane! I think our whole troop only sold about 1200 boxes with 10 girls!

It's okay, I'll step up and take the heat with ya!!
1970 I was in 6th grade and that was my final year as a Girl Scout. Cookies were 50˘ a box and we sold door to door. I sold many, many boxes of cookies.
The selling door to door wasn't taking orders either. We lugged around a case of cookies and the neighbors got to pick out what they wanted and purchase on the spot.

While I realize that the cookie sales is a big fund raiser and has been for many years it has just gotten to be way to commercialized. Not by the Girl Scout troops but by the local and national councils.
I too, would much rather give (donate) some dollars to the troops and know that the TROOP got benefit of the whole amount than to "donate" to the councils. The troops DO NOT get nearly enough money per box as they should.
I sold Girl Scout cookies as a girl and so did my daughters and granddaughters but 3.50 per box is insane.
I will never buy another box unless they are made more reasonable in price and the troops who do the work receive a more FAIR amount for their efforts.

I'm afraid I have to agree.

The thin mints have a totally different taste now. They used to be so distinctive that you knew you were eating a GS cookie. Now the thin mints are almost tasteless with very little "mint" to them

I feel sorry for the girls having to sell them this year because the word seems to be out that they simply aren't that good anymore.

I, too, would rather just make a monetary donation.

I used to LOVE thin mints! They taste so odd now, nothing like before.

I think donations are nice, but this used to be such a BIG thing. I was a "brownie" for 2 years and did the GS cookie thing. (One year my Mom was a cookie Mother) It made me feel so good to sell the boxes of cookies! I wouldn't have had quite the same feeling if I had just been given money. It made me feel like I was really accomplishing something, really working for something, selling those cookies. I did go door to door as well as my family buying boxes. My Gramma taught ceramics in her basement 3 nights a week, so some of those ladies would buy some too.

It tugs at my heart a little bit, at what the cookie selling is becoming.

I did buy a couple boxes this year, but not the thin mints.

I actually remember going door to door with my best friend, and our parents probably had no idea where we were at, they knew it was in the neighborhood, and we were fine.

Isn't that something? Nowdays we would never let our kids do that.
