I live about 40 miles to the east of Tampa. Unfortunately, as a transplant from Massachusetts, I don't know anything about the area your sister and her husband are interested in. Talking to someone who lives there would be best but this site will at least give them some info on the area. Florida Bigger Cities (over 6000 residents) - Real Estate, Housing, Schools, Residents, Crime, Pollution, Demographics and More Tell her to keep in mind that the closer you are to the water, the higher your home owners policy will be. I picked the town we're in partially because it was near Disney but also because it's in the very center of the state. Even so, after the 2004 hurricanes, the houses here had some damage too. Nothing like the coast areas though.

I live in Cape Coral and work in Ft Myers. If your BIL's job is between Tampa and Ft Myers, I'm guessing it may be around Bradenton/Sarasota area. I don't know much about those cities, but Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte (south of them, both in Charlotte county, Charlotte Harbour [water] is nearby) are both nice little towns. Englewood and Venice are up that way too - small, but nice little places. If they're coming from Long Island, little towns may be a huge culture shock for them though - maybe that's why they're looking more towards Tampa, huh? I wish them well in their search!
