Sedation Dentistry

Has anyone ever gone to a dentist that gives you a pill to relax you before you have a procedure done. I am deathly afraid of the dentist. I break out in a sweat just to call and make a appointment. I need a root canal and we have a dentist here that does sedation dentistry for people that are fearful like me and I was wondering if anyone has done this beofore. Thanks in advance.

It is AWESOME! Just make sure you take someone with you to drive you home after. I'm terrified of dentists too. When I was about 10 I was sitting in a dentist's office getting a routine cleaning and a spider started to drop from the ceiling and it was heading straight for my mouth. The dentist wouldn't listen to me and I wound up having to jump out of the chair.. only to turn around and see that spider land right where my head was. Ever since then.. it's been really hard to force myself to go twice a year. And for big stuff I have to be sedated. There's no way I could sit there otherwise. Here, the dentist either gives you an rx for a hefty dose of xanax or if you're just really terrified he can put you to sleep. I go for the xanax unless it's a root canal .. then I have him put me to sleep.

I've gone to the oral surgeon (SP?) for an extraction (getting a tooth pulled) and they give you an IV and you are out. This is the sh*t!!! the only way to go...
