important information

This gives us something to think about with all our new electronic technology.

GPS
A couple of weeks ago a friend told me that someone she knew had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard.

When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen.

The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had=2 0to clean up the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents.

MOBILE PHONE
I never thought of this.......
This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her mobile phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cell phone, credit card, wallet...etc... was stolen.

20 minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says 'I received your text asking about our pin number and I've replied a little while ago.'

When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text 'hubby' in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account.

Moral of the lesson:
Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list. Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mom, etc.... And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by=2 0calling back. Also, when you're being texted by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't reach them, be very careful about going places to meet 'family and friends' who text you.

*PLEASE PASS THIS ON
* I never thought about THAT! As of now, I no longer have 'home' listed on my cell phone

I never thought about it but I would not give out my PIN to anyone for any reason at any time unless husband was standing right in front of me.

It isn't a bad idea to be careful, but these stories are only partially true, according to snopes:

I understand that these are just urban tales, one completely false and the other mostly false. However, the first tale involving the garage door opener should lead to an eye opener situation.
Several years ago we replaced the door going from the kitchen into the garage with a solid steel door. The door that was there was a lightweight hollow core door that is very easy to break down. We installed a dead bolt lock on the new door and always lock the door when we leave the house.

I would suggest not removing the "home" number on your cell. What happens if you get in an accident and the police find your cell or someone finds your cell. The first name they look for is "home" or "husband/mom/wife". My friends husband was in a bad accident, hit a telephone and was unconcious. The cops hit "home" and she was able to go to the hospital where they were taking him.

I keep my husband's phone number in my wallet. I'm sure cops check wallets too.

Even if it's not true there's still some good reminders for all of us.

Moral that I get from the cell phone story is to not use texting. I probably take that away from it since I don't know how to text.

I do think that whether they are true on Snopes or not... as others have said, they are good things for all of us to be aware of.

If you don't use texting, talk with your cellphone company about having them turn it off. In some cases, you can get your bill reduced for removing this option.

We have texting turned off our phones. It doesn't save us any money (we use AT&T). We don't use PIN's anyway. I go into the bank so DH wouldn't know our PIN (and I don't either). I don't keep our garage door opener in the car when we are parked. It's just common sense. I put it in my purse. We had neighbors back in CA that had their truck broken into at the movies and came home to a burglerized home They used the car registration info (in glove box) for the addy and the garage opener. They didn't lock the door from garage into house. We learned that lesson a LONG time ago. We don't lock the interior door but don't keep the opener in the car (and we have an alarm).

Another thing to be careful about if you have an alarm are those "alarm remotes". People like my mom like just pushing a button and the alarm is deactivated (or activated). I HATE those. Say someone steals your purse. They have your address (on your ID) AND your remote to turn your alarm off. Generally, they have your house keys or some sort of method to unlock your doors as well. Bad idea. I have heard of break-in's with the remote alarm things as well.

It's really just common sense
