Got called by Sam's Club re: recalled product

I found this very interesting. I received a phone call last night from Sam's Club stating that I may be affected by a recall of Kashi granola bars (because of the peanut butter). Their records show that we purchased that item recently (which we did). The message said to return the item to the store for a full refund.

They are using the information culled from transactions to contact people about recalls. This morning, there is an article in our local paper stating that Wegmans and Giant are using customer card info. to contact people who may have purchased tainted peanut products.

It's great that stores are able to do this to alert customers of potential danger but it's also a little "big brother" -ish, too. They know everything we buy!

I got a letter from Sams Club last week that we had purchased the 45 pack of the Austin brand of 6-packs of pb crackers and cookies. I thought it was responsible that they were contacting people, however we buy them periodically, the last being a couple months ago. Those were eaten and all gone a long time ago!

No one in our family has gotten sick. We're actually still eating pb crackers - just a different brand. I checked and the ones we are eating were manufactured in a plant in North Carolina and aren't related to the one with the recalls.

I dont care for the stores that make you have the little card for purchases anyway. I assumed they would probably monitor stuff even if they said they didnt. I have some i've used in the past but when you have to have another keyring just for the cards it got pretty annoying so their all in the junk drawer heheh

I got a letter about the Zone bars I buy there.

If you use a store card or shop at "membership" places, they are going to track your sales. I hate that you have to use your store card to get the sale prices Kroger.

All those cards and key thingies do get annoying but around here, you don't get the good sale price unless you use the store card.

Well, you can always put the loyalty card in someone else's name. My cats gets more mail than I do.

Fry's has been putting a list of recalled products on all the receipts recently, and Amazon sent me an email about said recall. The Catalinas pay attention to your history, too. I've gotten a formula coupon on most shopping trips since buying some baby product (I'm hoping it wasn't the breast milk bags).

I just got an e-mail from an internet grocer I've used in the past about this issue, even though I've never purchased peanut butter or peanut products from em.

My father has the bad habit of registering his shopping cards in the names of various fascist dictators and their companions (literally - Stalin, Hitler's girlfriend etc). I keep telling him its not funny but what can you do with someone who's proud of his bumper sticker that reads "proud member of the vast right wing conspiricy" (ok, I find that funny too but I digress). Around here we use our cat for the phone book and other things - and yes she still gets credit card offers.
