Something I Never Wanted To See In Florida

Our mailman alerted me to this this morning. Apparently someone on the next street thought it would be a good idea to do this to their tree because of the cold weather we're having. I went over to take pictures and when I got out of the car, all I could do was

They put a hose up near the top of the tree and let water spray over it all night. By the time I got there the sun had warmed things up to the low 40's and the ice was falling off like little bombs!

I doubt if it helped the tree much but it sure was pretty.

Looks like Wisconsin, except for the grass.

Ha! That is pretty - but we get it here in Kansas every winter! I am ready for spring!

I have to say one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen is when the sun comes up the morning after an ice storm. The dazzle of the bushes and trees is gorgeous. Prettier even than the fall colors.

so, was this meant to insulate the tree? (I have heard that farmers down in orange country will spray oranges to insulate them when there is a threat of a freeze). I would think that the weight of the ice would break the branches.

I don't think this is recommended for regular trees and this was just a regular (non-citrus) tree.

The citrus farmers do this but it's very controlled. Some of the branches on the pictured tree did not look happy.

Maybe these people were from up North and just missed the New England winters.

That's really not a very pretty sight or funny either. Arkansas had a major ice storm last week...

I guess it was the home owner. I don't know these people. If I did, I would have shut it off for them. They're going to have a mess when they get home tonight.

Maybe the softer wood in FL can take it, but when an ice storm hits New England, the hard wood trees snap and it is a mess.

We had a huge ice storm in December and some towns lost almost everyone of their hard maples...and maples are the ones that have the vibrant colors in the fall....so we will be feeling the effects of that storm for a while to come.
