lactose Intolerance question

Can you be lactose intolerant to certain foods like Cheese but able to tolerate milk. My 11 yr old gets very sick when she eats cheese lbut not not when she drinks milk. I'm confused and not familiar with lactose intolerance. She gets diahrea and feels nauseous.

I get LI when I eat Sour Cream I can eat cheese, yogurt and ice cream fine. I stopped drinking milk a few years ago, because it made the mucus in my nose thicker (yuck know) but if I recall I could drink it with no other problems.
So I think yes.. you can have LI to certain foods. The pill Lactaid works pretty good. I have noticed over the years that my LI symptoms have decreased when I do eat sour cream.

I think this is difficult to say. There is not as much lactose in cheese (depending on the type of cheese) as there is in milk. So if your child is fine with milk but gets ill from cheese, there may be other factors involved...such as the kind of cheese and what ingredients are found in those.
You could experiment with the Lactaid pill (my dd and dh has this and I check with the doctors, there is no medicine in lactaid, it is simply an enzyme that helps with digesting lactose). See if they can tolerate cheese with a pill, then you could determine what the problem is.

Digestive Advantage for Lactose Intolerance is a wonderful product. DD has been using this for several years. The last time I looked it was $7.62 at Wal-Mart. I buy from eBay. Lactaid didn't help.

I am very lactose intolerant. The cheapest Lactose pills that I can find are Equate (store)brand at Walmart. The brand name Lactaid pills are expensive, and the Walmart ones work just as good and you get more for less money. I hate Walmart so I go every 3 or 4 months and stock up on my pills. :-)

Different dairy do affect me differently too. The higher the fat content in the food, the more my stomach usually hurts. I love cheesecake but if I'm not careful, it kills my stomach.

I have also read that people are more prone to becoming lactose intolerant as they age. I used to be able to have dairy products without problems until I was in my 20's. It took me a while to figure out what was going on. Also, African Americans are supposed to be more prone to be lactose intolerant as adults.

Thanks everyone! For example we ate our today and she ordered French Onion Soup her favorite and Chicken Parmesan. Well that earned her a trip to the ladies room. My question is she is 11 and I wasn't sure if she can take lactaid. I am going to call Doc and get some suggestions.

Ok, some of this could end up being TMI, but may help someone else. SORRY!

For the first 6 weeks after I was born, I guess everytime they gave me a bottle, it came right back out - violently. Then grandma fixed me up the old karo syrup formula (?) and I was able to tolerate that. Maybe my system was just ready.

Then when I got to be about 25, I started having really bad gas (looked 9 months pregnant!) and serious pain then diahrea. Finally figured out it happened after I ate dairy. For a while, Walmart carried DairyEase by Dean Foods, and that I could tolerate, but they must have quit making it. I learned quickly what would set me off. I can usually time it - I always figure 20 minutes.

Now, it seems that some things will set me off and others don't. Seems like I am able to tolerate more now that I am 42.

I have tried Lactaid and the Equate version and the other one mentioned. The Lactaid types worked about half the time, never sure when it would be half the time or not, so it wasn't worth it for the money or the possible embarrassment! The other one mentioned didn't do much for me.

When we go out for supper with our friends, I ask if we are going home or if we are going to their house to play cards after. If we are going to their house, I don't do dairy. They don't care and know about my dairy deal. They always say to eat what I want, they have 4 bathrooms! But I just really have issues with going at someone else's house.

I would suggest to maybe keep track of what happens when she eats certain dairy items. Some cheeses set me off, milk definetly!, sour cream, ranch dressing, sometimes butter. OH!!! Soft serve icecream!! I can't go to Dairy Queen at all!!! I can usually do better with hand dipped ice cream, but prefer to be home if I am going to eat it.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. Life really sucks with this, but you learn to deal with it. Of all the things in this world I could have, life is do-able. I am glad this is all that I do have.

Alicia

If it bothers her that much you need to stop letting her eat it.
