Menopause, shawls, & The Snuggie

Okay, I now understand where the stereotype of old ladies in shawls comes from - it comes from shawls being more comfortable and easier to get on & off in a flash (no pun intended) than sweaters when experiencing the temp fluctuations of menopause. I have always liked shawls to begin with, but these days I scour thrift shops for the very best quality ones I can find (silk and pashmina cahsmere are primo ;-).
In that vein, sleeping can be tortuous - boiling one moment, freezing the next.
But my DH has found a rememdy for 20 bucks that doesn't require 4 layers of quilts that need to be thrown off as I splay my body nude when the heat is turned up. And, oddly enough, it's that tacky tv sold thing called The Snuggie.
Try it, you'll like it.
I fully intend to rip it apart at some point when I can find better quality fabrics and make a gazillion of these puppies with the original as my pattern.

wear a robe backwards it's basically the same thing lol. That commercial annoys me cause she goes to answer the ophone and "has" to throw the whole blanket off for some reason, i can answer and not have to get anything else uncovered but one arm

No, no, no, no, no... it's not the same thing as a backwards robe (BTDT). This thing is much easier to toss off or remove partially than a backwards robe - I even demonstrated it to my kids who voiced their doubts that it was any better than my backwards robe actions. You can remove this thing either fully or partially w/out changing your position at all, unlike what needs to be done w/a backwards robe. It's an improvement on ye olde backwards robe deal. The thing that makes the Snuggie better is that there is much more material - covers you from neck to toe with material to spare, unlike a backwards robe or a throw, and your hands are freer than if w/a throw.
I am usually doubtful of those tv ad things, but am happy with this puppy, which is why I plan to take it apart and make my own with better materials. The fleece used is not top quality, and I personally prefer silks, wools, or cottons.

A recent issue of Time magazine had a good article:

Cult of the Snuggie, very funny stuff. After I got mine I looked up comments by folks who had it (shoulda done it first, I know), and I have to agree w/the comment I saw the most - the fabric is thin, not very good quailty. That's why I'm going to rip mine apart and use it as a pattern to make another one w/better fabric. The fabric it's made with also stays full of static cling. But that puppy is warm, and for me, it's so much easier to throw on & off than a backwards robe. Not worth the 20 bucks they charge for it, but I'm sure it'll be half that price at places eventually.

That is EXACTLY what I was going to say! Just get a zipper robe put it on backwards and wear that to answer the phone or go to sporting events lol.

Speaking of menopause.. is it common to feel like your so hot that you feel you can not stand it then literally 5 min later be freezing sitting in front of a portable electric heater with a cup of hot cocoa or coffee? I have been doing this for several days now.. I am thinking that it might be menopause. I have heard of hot flashes but sometimes I get so hot it is unreal. If this is the big "M" how long does this last? And when will my monthly visitor stop coming? (I am looking forward to that) (sorry OP to get off your subject, but when you mentioned that I thought I would jump in)

Menopause is actually after you have gone one year without a period. What most of us are experiencing is called perimenopause. And yes your temperature (and your moods) can go up and down at the drop of a hat. I experience vomiting often 2-10 days before my periods which have taken on a life of their own.

It truly helps to keep a diet of high protein, high fiber and lots of fresh fruits and veggies and to cut your salt intake. Also exercising helps a lot taking a walk does wonders. And drink lots of water if you are not doing so already.

Maybe you have the flu ronnang? I was like that. I am just getting over the flu. One minute I would be sweating and the next I would be shaking.

No I dont think I have the flu. I think it must be the perimenopause. my monthly visitor hung around a little bit for 8 extra days last month and is a week late this month. I think my hormones are changeing.
