Talking If You Feed Them, They Will Come

At least that's what I'm hoping. I now have 4 hummingbird feeders in my yard. One of the few things I miss about not living in Massachusetts any more are the lack of song birds. Florida is a dangerous place for these small, slow moving birds. Too many predators.

Every Spring since we moved here I really get homesick for the beautiful birds that would come to my house. We had gold finches, orioles, robins, purple finches and, of course, hummingbirds.

Soon, here in Florida, most of the very few small birds (Myrtle warblers and yellow throated warblers) will be leaving to go north. Only the Cardinals and mockingbirds will remain.

The recent bird count has a list of birds from every town that reported. In my town someone said they had hummingbirds... two different types including a hummer that's native to the west coast and seldom shows up this far east. It's a crap shoot trying to attract these little birds. IF they are in your area and IF they see a feeder, you might get lucky. If they find your house once, they will come back year after year.

So we'll see what happens. I've got through April or so to have one find us. After that they go up north to escape the heat. In the meantime, I keep checking the feeders.

For several years we had a hummingbird feeder hanging off the deck. I would take the feeder and put it in my lap and sit extremely still and the youngsters and the females would eventually come and feed with me holding the feeder. That was so neat. You can get a really good look at them when they are inches off your lap. While the others were feeding the male would fuss at me from a safe distance. That was funny. That little tiny bird would just be so mad at me, but he wouldn't come and feed until I put the feeder back on it's hook.

They are very territorial so if you have more than one feeder you have to have a good distance between them or one male will dominate both feeders. If they are far enough apart, a secondary male will learn to run in and feed while the big male is protecting the other feeder.

Our feeder fell to the pavement below a few years ago and I never bothered to replace it. I may just do that this spring. My grandson would enjoy seeing them, I think.

My parents get around 20 or more hummingbirds a year, and my Dad, will just stand and hold the feeder, and they will come up to it, it's pretty neat to watch.......I used to love just sitting and watching the hummingbirds........

First of all, incredible pictures. I think photography is more than a hobby for you.
Also, I am amazed to read that hummingbirds will get so close to a person to feed. I would love to see that.

From another board I use to be a belong to one of the members posted this photo. I think the story behind it was she had rescued this bird from a room in a school maybe? I've forgotten. This was a while ago but I loved the photo so much that I saved it. Wow, can you imagine!

You are so lucky to have such a wonderful array of birds to watch. And the hummingbird on the thumb is just precious!
