HELP - dog got into chocolate

I woke up this morning and found out that my 26 lb. shih tzu had gotten into my purse and ate some chocolate that was in it. I think it was about 3-6 of the little Dove bites.

I will call the vet as soon as they open, but was hoping that someone could calm me down and tell me Reba will be fine.

I've been on the internet for the last hour trying to get information and it looks like the toxic level is 1 oz per 3 lbs of body weight for dark chocolate. The whole bag is 9.5 oz and she weighs about 26 lbs. The bag was probably about 1/4 left in it so 2-3 oz. at the most.

She is acting normal and gobbled up her breakfast before I realized what she had done.

Our dog ate an ENTIRE bag of Dove chocolates once, wrappers and all and was absolutely fine. He probably weighed about 35-40 pounds.

I think Reba will probably be just fine and you can relax.

Thanks. DH actually took the empty bag and what was left of the individual wrappers to the vet this morning and they just called me and said Reba will be fine. They said she might have some diarrhea and a little upset stomach, but she will be okay. They said that Baker's chocolate (because it's not processed) is what is really dangerous for dogs.

DH feels bad because he is the one who set my purse on the floor next to the kitchen island where Reba could get into it. I am very careful not to leave my purse on the floor because I usually have hard candy, gum or some kind of candy in my purse and I know darn well that that little stinker will get into my purse and help herself to whatever is in there.

Geez, what a way to start my morning before leaving for work.

My 45 pound corgi ate a whole bag of Milky Way miniatures...also including the wrappers. We called the vet, but did not take him in. We just watched him for a few days, and he was fine.

I'm glad Reba is fine. It is quite a worry when they do things like that.

Glad to hear Reba is going to be fine. I had a friend that actually used to feed her dog chocolate kisses. She actually didn't know dogs weren't suppose to have chocolate until I told her. She said she loves them and she'd been feeding them to her as treats for years. That did make me wonder about how much and what kinds would be dangerous. Thanks for the info.

When I was a kid, I knew a family that gave their dogs M&Ms as treats!

Our husky, on several different occasions, has chowed down entire bags of Hershey kisses, foil wrappers and all. He's 12 yo and none the worse for it, but we do make sure to keep all chokkies well outta his reach now.

My doggie ate one of those little cartons (looks like a milk carton) of Milk Duds when she was a pup. It happened like this: I left the house forgot my phone and came back within about three blocks. All that was left were a few little pieces of cardboard and one guilty dog. And we feed her little bites of chocolate cake and stuff.
You don't want to overdo it but a little should not hurt.

Wink

Agree my brother Micheal's 80 lb boxer Butchie Boy knocked down the whole basket full of halloween candy this past year and he ate it all papers and all and he was fine , just fine. I have heard that chocolate is toxic to some dogs. However perhaps I could be wrong, I think if a tiny tiny dog ate alot of chocolate it would not be good. But as a concerned dog owner one would be concerned. Sincerely hope op all is okay with your dog..Funny my shelties love love to eat kelloggs frosted mini wheats, literally they love them more then dog treats go figure. Peace. Catherine

I don't think that small amounts of milk chocolate will hurt an otherwise healthy dog. If milk chocolate killed dogs then the dog we had when we were kids should NEVER have lived to be 13.
That dog ate more chocolate than a lot of people do and very little of it was actually given to to her. One year at christmas my mom got a 3 pound box of mixed chocolates from work. She knew what it was so she didn't unwrap it at work(most of the other people didn't either)and without thinking she put it under the tree. Lucy, the dog, got under the tree while we were out shopping the next day, opened the box of candy, ate all she wanted and then hid the rest in various spots around the house. We found candy everywhere!
She never had a sick moment from eating all that candy.

One of my former bosses had a pug that ate most of a 1 pound bag of m&m's-got up and stole them off the table. The only ill effect was later that night when the dog got sick in front of the daughters new boyfriend who was meeting the family for the first time-oops! After that, the dog was just fine and the daughter dated the boyfriend for quite a few months.

At Christmas time I use to put out hershey kisses. My little (now fat) cockapoo jumped on the table and got into by bowl of them and ate then entire bowl most of the wrapping also. There was about a bag and 1/2 there. He was fine, other then having to go outside alot the next day.

My kids used to share their candy bars and Halloween candy with all our dogs - that was before they said chocolate would hurt them. Chocolate never hurt any of my dogs or anyone's else's I met.
