Topsy Turvey

I was wondering if anyone has every tried that topsey turvey tomatoe bag?
I seen it on tv and then seen it at the store. I thought this would be great since I have a small back yard and the dog is back there. If I could hang one in my sunroom that would be perfect. It gets really hot in there in the summer if I leave the doors closed almost like a greenhouse. I love fresh tomatoes.
I know most of the stuff on tv does not work like they claim so I wanted to know if anyone has tried it and got good results.

thanks

BIG WASTE!!!! I had one outside last year (planted cherry tomatoes) and got maybe 25 tomatoes. Its a bit awkward to get the plant in the bottom to begin with. And the plant was in the sunlight, I watered and just didn't seem to grow as big as if you planted in the ground(which is what I am doing this year)At the end of the season it says you can take it down and empty the dirt to use next year....HAH....mine fell apart....dry rotted from the sun. My mom and sis both got one last year and all of them are in the trash!! Sis tried to plant zucchini and not even 1 bud!!! If planting in a sunroom you waould have better luck in a pot and set it on the floor. HTH

Thanks for answering that, I was also wondering about that. Anybody have any experience with the grafted fruit trees? I have a question over on the Around My House and Garden Board.

Thanks, I figured it was too good to be true, but thought it would be great if it really worked.

I did a little research on these last fall when I saw one of their infomercials. Because I am thrifty and also like to recycle as much as possible (translation: cheap with lots of old crap laying around) I wanted to see about maybe building my own version and of course found directions on the internet. I am going to try a few of these this year to see how they do and if it works I will do more next year. I will modify the design found here to use more than one plant per bucket: How to Grow Hanging Tomato Plants | How Did I Do It? and use recycled 4x6 lumber to make a hanging beam.

I really am hoping they work because ground squirrels here will make a person crazy.
As it is I have my some of my herbs growing in an old wheelbarrow so that it can be moved around as the sun gets stronger in the summer and to outrun the critters.

I got the idea from a really old Sunset magazine. And if I can talk a man at the swap meet out of another old wheelbarrow for $5 tomorrow, I will fill it with flowers for the front yard.

I had a large topsy turvy. what a joke! The think dry rotted. It was so heavy that it pulled the hanging thing out ot the tree. It's not that attractive either. I couldn't get anything to grow either. I have seen people take 5 gal paint buckes and make one. They don't fall apart and they grew green peppers in them. they just cut a hole in the bottom of the buck and stuck a plant in it.

If you want to grow some good tomatos, I heard this one old guy talking one day with his freind at home depot. He buys bags of yellow cow manure. I think it's the good stuff. He takes it home, cuts a hole in the bag when it is laying on the ground, sticks the tomato plant in it and he says he gets the best tomato plants. It's not very pretty but I thought it was a good idea.

I made a homemade topsy turvy yesterday. I can't wait to see if it works!
