Do you or have you lived where a famous crime occured ?

I saw this on another board I frequent.

I lived outside Fredericksburg, Va during the sniper shootings..also the Lisk Silva child murders.

The Sniper shootings here also.

Remember Lorena Bobbit? I used to live in Manassas and got my nails done by her

So many famous crimes in this area it seems or famous people held in the Jail in Alexandria that I drive by often.

Do you know of the Stephen Grant case? Where the husband killed the wife (while the kids were home), then chopped her up and put her parts in different places? Including a large local park? I live 10 min. from there.

Diane Downs killed one of her children and shot the other two nearby here. And of course the idiot EcoTerrorists did much of their handiwork around here.

Okay, let's see. I was born and raised in Alexandria, VA, but left before the sniper shootings. Still had family there, though, during that time. I lived very close to Susan Smith (within a 45 minute drive) when she killed her sons. AND I lived in Gastonia, NC when Phillip Lee Ingle killed two elderly couples. In fact, I was on the elevator at the court house and it stopped and security made me get off and take the stairs because they were bringing him to the elevator. He received national attention not just for the brutal murders, but because just a couple years after his conviction, he dropped all of his death penalty appeals and fought to be executed as soon as possible. He got his wish.

Forgot one - When I was very little, the Lyon Sisters were kidnapped right down the road from us, never to be seen again. I remember being absolutely terrorized. I still Google their names now and then to see if there's any new information.

There are several serial murders from around here:

Bob Berdella was from Kansas City, MO.

Richard Grissom & John E. Robinson were both from here. John E. Robinson killed women and stored their bodies in barrels in a storage facility & on his farm.

Also, the BTK killer was from Wichita about 3 hours south of here.

Scary stuff.

about 30 miles from Tri-State Crematory where Brent Marsh and family buried bodies on his property instead of cremateing them

Texarkana--unsolved murders from 50 or so years ago. The movie "The Town that Dreaded Sundown" is based on murders.

Helena, MT--The Unabomber was arrested in Lincoln, MT and held in our county jail. Many of the deputies I worked with were involved in that. And I actually got to see where his cabin use to be.

I remember the Lyon sisters case ! I grew up in MD. I think the man with the tape recorder had something to do with their disappearance.

Well, I went to school with Cynthia Lyda who just got out of prison last year. She was diagnosed with Munchausen's by Proxy and killed at least two of her children. That was in Texas though, although I understand she is back here living with her father.

Ourlocal bowling alley was in the movie about Columbine because one of the boys had gone to school here when he was in grade school.

And remember about 2 years ago there was a woman who planted bones that she claimed to be human that her dog found? I forget all the circumstances, but she planted the bones about 12 miles from our house.

When I lived in Florida I lived near where Eileen Wournos picked up and killed a couple of men then dumped their bodies.

I was in Gainsville when they had the College killings

Where I live now we have had a few big crimes that I can think of off the top of my head.

Big Dans Rape happened the next town over from me. They even made a movie about it.

The Au Pair murder trial with Louise Woodward was just 45 mins from where I live

The British guy who shot his wife and child then fled to England wasn't far from where we live either.

Thought of more:

I live the next town over from where Lizzy Borden killed her parents. Her house is a tourist attraction.

Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

We had a school shooting 5 or 6 years ago at the high school I went to in Santee CA. Back in 1979 a few miles from where I live a girl (age 16) named Brenda Spencer sat in her house across the street from an elementary school and shot both kids and adults. All the kids lived but she killed two adults that were trying to get the children to safty. I'm not sure if it was on the news everywhere but she is the one that was asked why did you do it and she said it was because she didn't like Mondays.

I use to live in Clinton, Md when i was growing up. Now this is a long time ago before any of us was born... but the Mary Surratts house was right near my dentist. That is where John Wilks Booth was suppose to have gone and stayed after he shot President Lincoln. Its a little red house on the corner of a road.

I don't live far from where Rae Carruth (Carolina Panther football player) paid people to have his pregnant girlfriend killed. The baby was born with severe disabilities and lives with his maternal grandmother. Hubby was working in the jail where he was held & was luck enough to guard him (lol). He said he was a jerk.

I lived in Garden City, KS in the 90's, and the city cemetary was right behind my house. The family that Truman Capote's book "In Cold Blood" was written about was buried there. I used to walk over and look at their graves and think of the horror they went through. The house where the murders occured was in Holcomb, a few miles down the road.

I did not live in the area when the Lyon sisters disappeared but I do now. I go to the shopping center that they were going to. I know their father and mother. They belong to a group we belong to. They still live in the same area. I think their son became a policeman.

I was around when the sniper hit too. The YMCA that they went to is about a mile from the school that I teach at. The woman he shot while vacuuming her car is about a mile away. I am close to all the places in Maryland that they caused problems at. I was teaching at the time so it was hard with kids to be in charge of.

Of course, the pentagon is not far away. So 911 in the DC area was scary.

Don't live near there, but my DH has taken me by the "Amityville Horror" house in Amityville, Long Island. Weird thing is that the house has been renovated so that it doesn't look anything itself as shown in the movie and on the book cover. However, every other house on the street DOES. Weird. Creepy.

I live about an hour from Columbine High School. My DH had a cousin who went there at the time of the shootings but was out the day of the shootings.

I spent my summers at the beach and outside the LA area when the "Night Stalker" was at large. His face still haunts me. Not many faces I remember from news programs as a child but I remember his.

Wow. When I was a little girl, my mom had breast cancer and while my sister (who's a good bit older than me) was in school, my mom's sister took care of me while mom was getting her radiation treatments. Anyway, I was at my Aunt's house when the story broke about the Lyon sisters. I've NEVER been able to get them out of my head. When I moved away from the area to go to college, I'd always periodically ask my mom if she'd heard anything about them. Then, it dawned on me a few years ago to check the internet. There are tons of amateur sleuths still working on their case. I wonder if their parents know there are still people out there who remember their girls and hope for a resolution? Wasn't the father a DJ or something? Or maybe a talk show host?

We haven't had many famous crimes in our area. The Brady gang had a big shoot out in downtown Bangor, other than that the small town I live in had an idiot hunter shoot and kill a young mother of twins in her backyard. It made national news. He *thought* it was a deer. Some of the locals tried to place the blame on her, for not having orange on and wearing white mittens, and the fact that she was not a Maine native played into the equation also. This happened years ago, and to this day....many still believe she was to blame. As far as I am concerned, the hunter got away with murder, or at the very least, manslaughter. He walked, as a matter of fact, he can still get a hunting license if he wants...

I grew up with Phillip Ingle and went to school with him all the way from 1st to 12th. I went to a christmas dance with him also. His sister, Tina, Killed herself right after Phillip died. She couldnt handle the whole mess of it all.One of the elderly couples Phillip killed was actually his aunt and uncle. We went to their funeral and Phillip was there! Weird.
I live close to the world famous sink hole that opened up in the parking lot of a resturant here during a big big rain storm. the hole swallowed a brand new vet!!!
That was yrs ago and they are still working on filling that huge hole.

Gang Lu college killings at the Univ of Iowa. He shot some professors and students. I think he killed 6 or 7, paralized a young temp worker who just recently died, and then killed himself. One of the shooting was in the bldg my sister works. She was told to lock her doors and get under her desk. She called my mom who had the tv on and my mom reported to my sister what was happening while she was under the desk.
Also back in the 80's farm crisis a farmer went on a shooting spree and shot a banker at Hills Bank in Iowa. I think he also killed his wife and himself. There is a book out about that. Hills is very close to Iowa City, 15-20 minutes south.

Our good friends had adjoining backyards with a couple. The husband tied the wife to a chair in a garage and then burned the garage down. I don't remember the name of the couple but there was a true crime book written about it.

There father was a DJ but I think he is retired now. I meet them about 20 years ago when we joined the Knights of Columbus. People filled us in on what happened since we just moved to the area. Their son became a policeman in hopes of finding out what happened to them. I am sure they know that people are still trying to find out what happened. About 10 years ago, they did some construction on the shopping center, and people thought they might have been buried about it. There are so many wooded areas in this area.

I forgot to mention Chandra Levy. The park that they found her is a few miles away.

Oh man. . .I live in serial killer central I think.

Ted Bundy is from here. He was my friend's mom's paper boy growing up and my Dad was one of his high school teachers. My Dad said he was smart and handsome. . .but kept to himself. He was VERY charming. Creepy. Everyone here has a Bundy story. I remember when they were looking for "Ted" back in the 70's. . .I was terrified. I wish they would have caught him here. . .then all those poor girls in florida would still be alive.

And then there is Gary Ridgeway, the Green River Murderer. He worked and lived about 20mins up the road. I have a friend from high school that worked with him at Kenworth. . .said he was very religious. Ugh! He didn't terrorize me as much as Bundy did, because he preyed on prostitutes, but it was still unnerving because I think it was the longest running unsolved serial murderer case. I'm glad he is behind bars. . .he is a coward!

And then Joseph Duncan is from here, the man who took the Groene children in Idaho and killed their family and then Dylan. I remember when they found the girl. . .a waitress in a restaurant called the police. . .what a miracle. But that poor child. . .I just can't imagine. His case really irks me. . .he was in jail here for some heinous crimes that he should have never seen the light of day, but some stupid judge thought he deserved to walk the streets. I hope that judge thinks about his case every damn day!

Lizzy Borden murders

I grew up in her home town ,and the town of their "summer home".
My grandfathers house was about 3 doors down from their summer house

Oh, also the Claus/Sunny Von Bulow case...that was made into a book/movie (Reversal of Fortune). That was big news here when I was in school, I remember the Big Dan's incident too...now that you mention it Keowa.

There locally the Great White concert fire happened also, but I wasn't living in the area anymore.

I live about 35 minutes from where Shawn Hornbeck and Ben Ownby were found.

Two other kids that have disappeared, Arlin Henderson and Bianca Piper were both from my county. I knew Arlin, not real well, but I saw him a few days before he disappeared. Bianca lived on the same road as my best friend.

I live just outside Kingman AZ which has a connection with the Oklahoma City bombing.
And I work in Laughlin NV and was locked down in the city overnight in 2002 when the Hells Angels and the Mongol motorcycle clubs decided to go to war during the annual River Run motorcycle rally.

Those are really interesting, albeit quite disturbing reports. Happy to say, I think I will stay in Va. Beach, while we have our share of crimes, I can't really think of any famous ones. That's fine by me!

Live in the same town as the Thurston High School shootings. Kip Kinkle killed both of his parents on May 20 and then went to school the next morning and opened fire in the cafeteria killing 2 students and seriously injuring many more.
