Unemployment Checks Up $25 This Week

Unemployment checks went up $25 this week. I guess that extra $100 a month will make a big difference for some families. I wonder how much of it gets paid back in taxes?

Guess this is part of the stimulus package... However no one mentioned that it was selective states or areas...

in the times that I had to collect unemployment, the money is not taxed when it was paid to me--HOWEVER, when tax time rolled around, I had to pay taxes on it.
That has been 15 years ago, so I'm not sure if the tax laws have changed or not.

no increase here in Ma either. Now when you collect Unemployment you have the option to have it taken out of your check weekly or pay at tax time.

Now here is Ohio you can choose to have taxes taken out of your check or pay them at the end of the year.

Just a tidbit of useless knowledge I have swirling around in my head:

Most states do not tax workers' compensation benefits. And the feds certainly do not.

In Montana, we can take out child support if we have an order from the state.

I don't know about other states (thankfully--Montana is enough!).

And I agree, it's not fair to "punish" the children because you (generally speaking) got hurt at work, and can't or don't want to return to work!

I have a friend whose husband is on unemployment in West Virginia and she is furious that they got the $25 increase. She said it's giving her husband more incentive NOT to look for a job!

if 25 bucks is going to give her husband an incentive to not look for a job then he is crazy. 25 bucks means i can just buy 2 more packs of diapers for my kids. Unreal.

The weekly unemployment benefit will temporarily increase by $25 on top of the roughly $300 jobless workers currently receive. Plus, the first $2,400 of unemployment benefits in 2009 will be exempt from federal income taxes.

I agree, but you would have to know what she is going thru right now. He will look for any excuse not to work. Why she stays with him, I'll never understand.
