I hardly ever buy scratch offs since seeing a report on 20/20 or one of those shows. It said that even after the big prizes are won they still keep selling the tickets and the customers have no way of knowing that the big prize is gone. So I will buy scratch offs when the game is new.

But I buy Megabucks and Powerball every week. The most I have ever won is $25. I only buy one dollar on each one. Someone is going to win I have as much chance as anyone else.

I rarely buy buy a lottery ticket and I do not buy scratch off games .

While traveling through Iowa a four years ago, I bought a few of those pull tab cards (they may be called pickles or something else in other regions). Anyway, I hit a streak of luck, and one was a $25 winner, and one was a $50 winner. I was elated, and that's the most I have ever won. Even though I did win, I usually will not play these, as I am certain it can become a habit.

My 8 year old is hooked on scratch off tickets, thanks to my grandma and aunt! He usually wins though, however, when I play, I hardly do.

When I turned 18 I bought a couple of scratch off tickets. Of course I didn't win anything and thought "What a waste of money...I've never won anything before, why would I start now?" LOL! I think I am just an unlucky person!

BTW, Crittles, how did you get a picture of my husband as your avatar?

A long time ago I won about $1200 on what's called the Cash5 in NJ. We had 4 of the 5 numbers, if we had all 5 it would have been more like $100,000.

My Dad won $20,000 on a scratch of once, but he probably spent $40,000 to win it. He was totally addicted and bought hundreds of dollars a week in lottery.

Now I only play when it's big bucks, over $100 mil. or so. I played when I worked and had money to waste.

Hubby plays megabucks, and occasionally buys scratch tickets. We have never won more than a few dollars. We were visiting an Elks Club in another town and bought $10 worth of pull tab tickets. I won $100 and dh also won $100. We thought it was funny, because we never win anything at our local club. Guess we just needed to visit a new club....it brought us luck for that day. We ended up going out and having a wonderful dinner that night!

I will put scratch off tickets in a birthday card occasionally and will join in when someone in the office takes up for the mega type ticket.

Basically my take on the whole thing is, the lottery is for people that are bad at math.

Yeah, I had a friend who won $30,000 in California, after taxes it came to about $20,000. She and her husband probably spent $40,000 on the lottery tickets in the years leading up to the big win

Imagine if she played the stock market instead...

I play my daughters weight in the nitely number. I was only playing it for about a month when I won $380. When I went in to get my money I bought 4 $5 scratch tickets which I never buy and I won $1000 on it. I still don`t but scratch tickets. Quit while I was ahead.

I bought $25 of tickets this last weekend - got $25 freebie money and decided to spend it on a "chance". I won $3. Oh well - I had fun talking with my DH about where we should buy the tickets (what names/towns sounded most like winners) and what we would do with the money if we won. Worth $25 to me... I buy them very rarely and rarely win, ALTHOUGH I won $1,800 about 12 years ago. It rocked.

If she had played the stock market she would probably have had much less now. lol (not that there is anything funny about the troubles on the stock market)

We play the powerball each Wednesday and Saturday night - only buy $1 ticket each time though...We've won only a few dollars on it...got the powerball #.

We play scratch offs every now and then..Won $150 on one once and any more we usually win just a couple dollars or so.

You have to be careful with youngsters and promoting gambling. They are very impressionable, and one just has to be careful showing how much fun buying scratch offs can be. Aside from saving money and not losing money, this is one of the reasons I do not buy scratch off tickets and pull tabs........I don't want to leave the impression with my kids that this is a good thing to do with your extra money.

The best I ever did was on a scratch off somebody ELSE won on.....I was working the register at my first job and a local construction company owner came in and tossed his winner on the counter saying " I think I won $40" ( He was busy talking to someone).... I looked at it to verify and he had won $400! He gave me $20 for being honest and telling him since he had NO clue.
I rarely play any lottery, but I do toss in a few bucks when the jackpot gets crazy big. I am just too cheap to play, I always want my $1 back...lol

I have a $3 winner sitting here from the last big winning drawing ($200+ million jackpot)

I don't play, I think it's a waste & have also seen a lot of reports not just about how the big prize is gone but ALL prizes for some games may already be awarded and they still sell the tickets for months/weeks afterward so that's a total loser to me .
My dh plays sometimes, he buys the scratchoff tickets also. He has won $100 and $500 once, and a few $10 or $20 winners. But I bet he spent more than that on tickets over the years!

When we first moved to IN we were broke and my DH had purchased our first Indiana Lotto ticket. We were looking at ads on a Sun. morning and we just happened to remember the ticket. We had five out of the six numbers and my heart jumped for joy until I realized that it was only about 8xx.xx dollars. Weird thing is that we owed money for IRS due to an error and it was around 75x.xx and we didn't know how we were going to come up with that kind of money. Must have been beginner's luck.

See, Crittles, he used to be my boyfriend too. Until that one Casino Night at work when he professed his undying love for me. You know the words. "Come on. I don't want to do that. I want to be more than that." Then we met up at the office and made out and fast forward, yada yada yada, we met up at a gas station where he told me "I just... couldn't wait" and slipped the ring on my finger. The rest, they say, is history.

Wink

Hardly ever play and hardly ever win. I do try to play the mega millions when the winning price is high and I have played the same set of 6 numbers and so far, no win... Peace. Catherine

I play maybe $20 a year and mostly break even. Only when I have to go inside to pay for gas I have won $100 1 time.

My Dad spent $5 last year and won 1,000.

There is a way in GA that you can check online to see what prizes have been claimed...I didn't know about until my Mom told me about it...I usually only buy the scratch offs once in awhile...maybe two tickets per month...I'll play the Fantasy Five and Megamillions when it gets up there pretty high...I have a card filled out with numbers for the five tickets that I just keep in my glove compartment and use over and over...I've never won anything big... ~Lisa

Never bought a scratch off, only bought a lotto ticket once over 20 years ago, and felt guilty about that. I am a cheapskate to my core and just can not bring myself to risk that $1 for a ticket.

We have a lot of Indian casinos where I live and folks around here love going to them. A neighbor wants me to go with her sometime, said she only lets herself have $20 to play with. But to me, $20 is too much to lose on such an uncertainty. I'd be thinking the whole time of how many pairs of sneakers or weekly sale priced groceries I could buy.

If I'm gonna gamble w/$ it will be on movie tickets ;-)

Ditto, Momziller and twalters1 (I really like that bad at math, haha!). It always strikes me that the majority of people who spend money on lottery tickets are those least likely to have much discretionary money. I guess that's what makes them desperate for the big win.

One needs only look at how much revenue/profit is generated through lotteries and other forms of gambling to see why it's really not worth throwing money at....

In my humble opinion, of course!

I buy scratch tickets from time to time, mostly when I have coupons for them.

Yup, here in PA we get inserts with the sale ads for the lottery and there are coupons with them. Mostly the coupons are for the lotto type games which I don't play, but there are a few for scratch off tickets. Things like "Buy 2 $1 tickets and get 1 $1 ticket for free".

The most I ever won on a scratch ticket was $40 and I won that twice. I get lots of free tickets and $1 wins. I'd say I've broke even over the course of time. I never spend more than $5 at a time and buy them maybe once a month. I don't think I'm a candidate for Gamblers Anonymous and if I didn't have extra money I sure as heck wouldn't buy lottery tickets.
