What will go wrong next???

Geez, what else can go wrong with my house? As I've posted before in the last 12 months or so I've had about $1,800.00 in car repairs, replaced the riding mower, replaced the water heater, washer and dryer, the oven caught fire and it's still outside because I haven't gotten a new one yet, then we had the mouse incident and now last week the dishwasher wouldn't drain. My son took out the dishwasher and I'm putting shelving in there instead so that's not that big of a deal. I don't have much space so I'm happy about this. Then something spilled in the frig and has been stinking for a few weeks. I've cleaned it and ajaxed it, etc... Finally a friend told me to put in charcoal (not the grill kind, it has chemicals in it) and that's seems to have done the trick. So tonight I'm doing the dishes by hand and I'm all done and feeling good when I noticed water on the floor. You've probably guessed it by now but the garbage disposal went wacko. So I had to clean all of that up. My son and I got to laughing so hard I almost wet myself. At this point you have to laugh or go crazy. I prefer to laugh. Then I get up from cleaning the water up and my son had washed all his white dress shirts and hung them up on the curtain rod by the deck door. For some reason that just cracked me up. We had kitchen stuff all over the kitchen floor, fans going to dry the woodwork and for some reason all those shirts lined up just made me lose it which made him lose it. Just wanted to keep you all updated on our "home adventures". I'm sure we will be laughing about this stuff for years. When we took the dishwasher out we wrapped it up in shower curtain liners and put it on the deck. My son said "mom we are really white trash now, we have a stove in the front yard and a dishwasher on the deck". I said "no we aren't because we aren't using duct tape!" The house is just about 7 years old. When it rains it pours right? Oh and I forgot to add that I fell in my garage a week ago and landed on my tailbone on the end of a wooden table. My son is pretty sure it's at least fractured. We looked it up online and you really can't do anything about it so I didn't go to the doctor but man does it hurt to sit and stand, etc... So much fun at my house!!!

Well, it's not just you.

In the past three months, I've had to replace brakes, the alternator, the battery, the belt, the fuel filter, the air filter, cap/rotor, plugs & wires on my Jeep. Only to total it out Saturday night when a 180+ deer decided to play chicken with my Jeep doing 55mph!

I won't even go into the bad luck in my personal life!

You should know better than to ask this question.

My ds busted his tailbone a few months ago. He was getting dressed for school and tried to kick his underwear off He fell back on the hardwood floor. He said he was fine and was even running to catch the bus, because he was late. I got a call from the nurse a few hours later that he was in a lot of pain. By the time we got to the ER he had shooting pains in one leg and numbness in the other. He's fine now.

Sincerely hope op that things will be better for you.. Right now as of last week our dryer went which if I had to choice I rather the dryer then the washing machine. But it seems like it goes forever, I try to hang alot of clothes outside, nothing like the fresh air for clothes, the best fabric softner ever. Besides that my male cat Minnie is in and out, went missing for about 22 hours and came back hurting bad, we had him to the vet emergency friday nite, all under his tail was all cut up from fighting with another cat, a big black male cat, who lives on the corner. They fight all the time. Needless to say, the emergency vet comes to us and says you can do this 3 ways. The most expensive was 1200 dollars, then 850, then 325 dollars. We took the 325 they cleaned it all up stiches, antibiotics, shaved him and 2 shots. Minnie's days of going outside have come to the end. However it is not easy he is crying at the door. Oh well again Op sincerely hope things get better. Peace. Catherine

Every month, I was replacing something such as the well pump, hot water heater, refrigerator, dryer, and multiple service repairs on my vehicle, etc. It stopped in January, however, I'm just holding my breath for the oven, and anything else over 15 years old waiting...........

Well, will it make you feel better to know other people are going through the same type things, LOL? Last year our oven broke, the stove part still worked and I went for several months without the oven because I refused to put one one the credit card or take out of savings, so we waited until we had the cash to pay for one, also looked on Craigslist, couldn't find one so we did get a new one the week before Thanksgiving. That same week we got the new stove, the clothes dryer broke (went for a couple of weeks hanging clothes out, we do have a clothesline), but I was able to buy a used one off Craigslist for $25. The dishwasher is also broken, so we had the plumber come and unhook it so we could get it taken out to put in another cabinet in that spot. After that the kitchen sink clogged, we ended up using 5 bottles of Drano over a 2 week period and after very slow draining back to no draining at all we had to call the plumber to unstop the drain. In the meantime over the 2 week period, I had an allergic reaction to the Drano fumes, ended up in the ER twice, had to go on 2 rounds of steriods, had a rash all over and we had to air the house out when it was 15 degrees outside. Never using Drano again and will not be too cheap to call the plumber to start with next time, LOL. After that the house heater (central heat) broke, so had to have the repair guy come out and fix that, they had to take the coil part out this was about a month ago, got the heat working, but this week just came back to put the coil back in for an additional $150 so the AC will work when we need it. I just fired up the pool heater a couple of days ago and initially it worked, but now it's not, the water is 75 with the solar blanket on and I am weighing it out wether to call the pool heater repair guy ($75 just to come to the house without fixing anything) or wait a couple more weeks and not even worry about it. I am leaning towards just waiting and not having it looked at until the fall. Then last week all the electricity in my bathroom in the master bedroom stopped working, so now we need to call an electrician, it's done it before and it had to do with the light switch. And we could really use a newer car, ours have 139,000 miles, 140,000 miles and 126,000 and 2 of them have no AC, but we have no car payments but it really is time to get something with less miles, but I would like to pay cash if possible. At least we have put nothing on the credit card and I am very happy about that! Oh, and I forgot the two new tires for the van and a new battery for the car.

BTDT.
Last year I swore that about every 30 days in the dead of night all our major appliances would get together and put there names in a hat for the "What breaks down this month lottery".

It got to be like clockwork for a little while. And of course it would always be at the least convenient tmie, like when the central air went out in spring.
(PS spring in AZ can mean 100+ temps)

Wow I could swear you all live at my house! My bad luck almost always comes in three, so when something breaks or quits working, I start just walking around looking at everthing trying to figure out which one will be next.

You can add me to the list. This past fall was really bad. The Caddy needed major repairs, DH chipped his front tooth and needed dental work, there was a leak in the water line (major plumbing work needed), and my son's college application fees/audition trips. Last month the dryer wasn't working and the washer had a leak. We had to get both of those fixed. It seems like when it rains, it pours. Luckily nothing has broken and everything is going good now. ~Lisa

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger!!! Same luck here, the oven went out last week. The dryer that's about 13 months old is no longer drying. The dishwasher was replaced in October. Washing machine last summer.

Our house is only 8 years old, started out with all new appliances, and now the only one that hasn't been replaced is the Refigerator. I guess I know what I will be purchasing next!!

So all your appliances are going out around 8 years of age? That is how old our oven/stove was 8 years old when it went out. I know when I was growing up my parents appliances would last for 20+ years, I can remember their washer, dryer, refrigerator all lasted at least 18-20+ years. They certainly don't make appliance like they used to!

I agree with both of you! They don't make things like they used to "back in the day". I don't remember my parent's replacing appliances the way that we do today. They would last forever. Same for the older houses...they were built so much better back then. Today they just throw them up in a few weeks and move onto the next one. Half of the people constructing them don't even know what the hell they're doing. Our central air conditioning upstairs was put in so half assed that the repairman who came out didn't even know where to begin. He would literally have to have ripped the entire system out! So much for that. Sigh... ~Lisa

My microwave is almost 30 yrs old. It's really old looking and doesn't have any cool features, but it still works. I refuse to get a new one until it dies. I know once I get a new one it will have to be replaced every couple years.

That's one thing I keep waiting to go out is our CHA, our unit is about 30 years old, or so the repair guy says, we have lived here 9 years and the house was built in 1930. Everytime it needs a repair I think this is it, we are going to have to replace it, but so far we haven't had to.

We had an old floor console forever when I was a kid. Eventually it started acting funny, but as soon as you would hit it would be fine, at least for 5-10 minutes. We always sat on the floor to watch tv. We would put a pile of matchbox cars next us and every time the tv went fuzzy, we would roll one across the floor into the bottom of the tv, that way we didn't have to keep getting up to kick it.

I hope I'm not cursed from just reading this thread.

OP, your house is only 7 yrs old? My house is 20+ yrs old and everything original is still working except we replaced the refrigerator and washer, both some yrs ago. My dryer only works on certain settings and when it wants to, but I keep using it. I just make sure to only run it when awake and watching it. I don't want any fires. The one setting did manage to scorch and ruin a very expensive quilt of mine, ugh.

Oh, I did forget, we had to replace the commode. What a mess that was. I won't even go into detail, you just had to hold your nose shut for awhile.

Had our share of pet problems and lost 2 furbabies in the past few yrs. That's always the worst. But both lived to 17 yo, so they lived long lives.

I like that every one can laugh about the "method's of their appliances demise, course I also know that when it is happening it sure isn't funny. The story about the match box cars reminded me of my cousins TV, the on button had gotten messed up so the only way it would stay on was to prop a broom handle against it. Naturally, it would eventually slide loose and someone would have to get up and re-prop it. Now people can't seem to live without a remote control - me included and I can remember LONG before they were invented.

The washer and dryer were old but not the stove, water heater, etc... Tonight my son and I went to Lowes and ordered a stove. It will be delivered on Tuesday. We also bought a cabinet to fit in where the dishwasher was. We took out the microwave that was bolted into the wall. That was a job!Did I mention that is on it's last legs too? Makes a horrible noise when you use it. My son then put up a nice shelf between the cabinets. It looks so nice! We just need to stain the cabinet and slide it in after it is all dry. I'm going to have so much more storage room in my small kitchen now! Now we will have to add the microwave to our outdoor collection of stove and dishwasher! lol I think I will see if Lowes will also take the dishwasher when they take the stove.

Two things, the outdoor collection of appliances made me think of Jeff Foxworthy, "You might be a redneck, if you have more kitchen appliances in your yard than you do in your kitchen"
And the other is that I have found that by asking if the delivery driver would be willing to haul off something extra and perhaps offering to buy lunch or a cold one after work in the form of a tip works well.

I exercise on my treadmill in our basement, and we have a very old TV that I watch. No cable, just local channels, I use rabbit ears. For the last six months the only way I can get it to shut off is to unplug it. The on/off button doesn't shut it off. Not sure why, but its not that big of a deal to unplug it. Everyone laughs at me when they see me unplug it. Hey...it still works, and we cannot afford a new TV, so for now....it will do!

I can relate. It's been "one of the those years" for us. MIL died unexpectedly just over a year ago. My mom died back in January. I was just told that the dad I'd been looking for for years died back in '79. We had to have two of our dogs put to sleep, and we had to find a home for two of our cats before we moved back to Washington state. On top of all that, my 21-year-old daughter had a cancer scare that we're still holding our breaths over. She needs more followup before we can breath again.

Once we got here, we started getting calls from our property management company for the house we own down in Oklahoma. We rent it out whenever we leave Oklahoma for another state due to dh's job. It's always gone well, but not this time. Now, after leaving the house empty for just a month, our water pipes needed replacing. When we left, the pressure was fine. However, the new renter constantly complained about the lack of water pressure, so we ended up having to replace all the water pipes in the house. She also complains that the pedestal sinks are not attached to the walls, and they were. In fact, the property management company installed one of the sinks just before she moved in. She makes veiled threats about what she's going to do if one of the sinks falls on her son. It's been a nightmare. I dread it when the phone rings anymore.

Here's hoping the rest of the year improves...
