Mods, Please Clarify Board Rules Against Cursing

I (along with most of the regular posters) have noticed that there is great inequity in the enforcing of board rules. Some poster are penalized for infractions while others are not. Lately, there have been more vulgarities posted on the board and like always, somebody has to push the envelope to the limit.

This time, that poster is Cantering1. In the thread titled 'Suggestion', she has called other posters a vulgar name and insulted them. While I was not one of the posters she cursed at, I'm curious as to whether new board rules are in effect. Her vulgar post remains on this board, giving the impression that using this type of language to insult other posters is now acceptable posting behavior at My Coupons.

It was my understanding that posting direct insults, curse words, and vulgar language on these board would not be tolerated. Those rules have been in effect for many years.

Has that policy changed?

Please clarify your board rules so that we're all clear on the level of behavior you expect from your members. Please either confirm or deny whether foul language, insults, and cursing are now allowed at The Cafe.

I've been called so many names on here it's pathetic. The "c" word was the worst. I have complained many times and I usually don't get a response. I have even written Greg several times asking the same questions but have never had a response to my emails. There are a few mods that are AWESOME and have removed some offensive posts. THANKS!!! I have been told that they don't want censorship on here and that adults should be able to behave themselves. I have pointed out that they either need to enforce their own stated rules or remove the "rules". I hope the op's questions will get answered by someone in charge. Thanks op for posting this.

I found this thread I started once asking for some of the KTS bashers to find quotes where I have called anyone a name. I stated examples of some of the names I've been called.
From a McCain thread:

usnamom-Get help. --low class, bigoted, not very nice---posts crazy ****---refers to me as belonging to the KKK, "you are not a good Catholic". McCain has serious character flaws so do you....

Jeanief-calls me disgusting, pathetic, racist, bigoted, ignorant and demented. Also I have "bigoted, racist deluded responses".

And in the Toby Keith thread-racist, homophobe, low brow (Neanderthal) mentality, sad, sick, pathetic and a cockroach. All for citing actual statisics about the crime/race problem that is developing where I live, which by the way, has been identified as a problem by the community leaders and the schools who are trying to figure out ways to handle the problem.

I assume I will get a bunch of posters saying my panties are in a knot, etc... for even posting this but they are all examples of name callilng that is supposed to be against the rules.

I would love it if Greg would say specifically if name calling is considered ok and if it is, does it qualify as "another person's source of amusement"? I really can't see any time swearing at people on here should be allowed whether it's directed towards a mod or not. If it's ok maybe Greg can tell me where I should go to get my "cup of shut the F- up"!

I'll have to agree with what cantering1 said! Spot on. I've noticed it everywhere there are open forums with general discussions. People just are getting carried away with bashing people that don't agree with what they think.

So I'm sure someone will come back and reply to me "then why don't you just go away then". Why? Because I have just as much right to be here is someone that joined in 1995 that's why!

I admit that at one time in my life, I took the boards way to seriously! But man, to keep a running list of who's offended you? I am always amazed when someone dredges up something like that. I couldn't tell you who said something nasty to me yesterday, much less weeks or months ago (I'm speaking about on message boards). I do however remember the people who have contacted me via PM to offer words of advice or comfort or support. Why not choose to remember and appreciate the good? Why choose to harbor anger, resentment and bitterness?

That being said, because the boards are, for the most part, unmonitored there will be posters who insult and criticise members. I personally do not come to The Cafe everyday and do not read all the posts, so we depend on you members to bring issue to our attention that you believe are questionable.

Issues are handled on a case-by-case basis. If a poster is found to have crossed-the-line, the post will be edited and the member will receive a warning. Repeat offences can result in a member being banned from posting on MyCoupons.

If you see something that you feel is out-of-line, please click the red triangle at the top of that post and/or PM any Mod.

In Kathy's defense, and please correct me if i am wrong, Kathy, she did a cut and paste from an old post of hers. I don't think she keeps a running list. She and others were dickering on the politics board, and all of those things were said within the same day or two... and, I believe, within the context of just 2-3 posts.

It was in the midst of all of those statements that she felt were in violation that she made a list of all of them and put them into one post to ask the mods about where the lines were regarding the rules.

I think she just remembered that post, looked it up, and did a cut and paste this morning... I don't think she has a file called "Enemies and their Statements About Me" on her C: drive. lol.

At least there was a response this time. I have asked, and so have others and received no response. mc is run like a grade school......sometimes the playground needs a monitor. Sometimes the monitor happens to look the other way when it's specific people. Sometimes the monitor is looking at specific people.

I know. I received a pm from another member quoting a moderator. Obviously they can't all be fair/neutral all the time.

I understand a public board with volunteer (or seems some are paid) moderators can't enforce everything. However, as I have stated before, it could be much more objective rather than subjective.

And of course Marilyn you would have to assume things and then go with it!!! It's being "dredged" up because it backs up the ops question. So you don't remember things people say huh? Thank you! You are right on target (are there any sales there? lol). Actually there are countless topics where these names have been used. It seems like anything controversial or "not pc" will bring out the insults, name calling, etc...

I think we've pm'd on this before. But I'll add a few things. I have clicked that red trianlge button many times when there are inapprorpiate words on here but rarely anything happens. I'm still confused as to what is not allowed. Are the names that I have been called repeatedly-racist, homophobe, bigot, coakroach, pathetic, sick, etc... allowed since they aren't specifically cursing? If so, why does this board tolerate vile insults? Thanks ahead of time!

No, I didn't say that at all. I didn't just come along and say you were racist or a homophobe and as far as I can remember no one else did either, without you giving someone the idea that you might be. There were discussions, some of which you started and during those discussions, your views led some people to think you might be racist, homopobic etc.....Everyone has a view.

Those posts are how people get to know someone. I was not the only one who thought your postings made you sound racist and homophobic. You did nothing to change anyones views of you instead you dug your heels in tighter and there it was. I was there, I read what you wrote and though I am sorry if it hurt your feelings, that is how you came across.

Don't make it sound like people were just being mean to you for no particular reason. If I was to reread those posts (which anyone can by doing a simple search) I would say the same things again. I might not say them in the same manner but the sentiment would be the same. You are not a victim here. There is no victim here. You gave as good as you got.

No I don't call people names. In fact one of the cut and pastes I posted here was from a challenge to the name callers to find examples where I used such names. No one posted any! I might say I have said things that "that was immature", etc.. .but I do not call people derogatory names.

I know I have expressed this before, but I think it bears repeating. As one of the mods, I can tell you that it is an upaid/volunteer position.

I decided to jump on board as a mod because I wanted to help out, feeling that I wanted to give back to a community that gave me so much. But I am limited in my time to be here. I work full time and like many of you, have a family to tend to along w/having my own physical limitations. Because of that, I offered to watch over the Arts and Crafts board since I felt it was a board that wasn't as busy and one I could feel more secure about watching. Since then, a number of mods have left, leaving a few of us to try and watch more.

I rarely get to read the posts on this board due to time constraints, but I do stop by every few days just to at least view the post counts and see if any need to be closed. If there is anything inappropriate going on, I would really appreciate a PM as my siggie line requests. Several of you have done that and I hope that I have been able to address your needs quickly and with some satisfaction. I really do want to help out, but we need to act as a team. Remember what it says in the notice section at the top of the page:

Unfortunately, one way to police our own was via the reputation system....but because someone had trouble with exercising self-control and common sense in using it, it went away.

I have not been able to figure out what moderators think is OK and what is not. Clearly, name calling is totally OK most of the time. Quite frankly, I don't think a general "b*tches" is at all as bad as some of the direct namecalling and nastiness.

Seems to me, and I have been a member here for waaaayyyy to long, but it appears that the name calling is ok as long as it is directed at certain posters. But if one of those posters calls someone something back, then it becomes a problem.I know mods have posted that they treat every member the same but if you sit back and watch the threads, some members can bash. harass or call some members names but as soon as that member retailates, the thread is locked. No matter what the mods say. its all about who you are and whos butt you kiss. Just like in the real world. lol

I actually think it might not all a favoritism thing as much as certain users report every tiny thing directed at them while others are able to play in the sandbox and take a hit or two without screaming mommy. Just an idea to ponder.....

Actually, that's pretty funny as my dd is at the state basketball Special Olympics as we speak. Comparing certain posters to Special Olympians would be an insult to the Special Olympians. Lucy, I remember the rep incident, but not well, and couldn't have recalled exactly who cjs was referring to if my life depended on it. My comment about the Special Olympics has to do with a wisecrack Obama made on the Leno show last night. He said he is a very bad bowler and said that watching him bowl is like watching the Special Olympics which was, IMHO, in much poorer taste than most of what I see here.

I couldn't tell you who called who any names, and frankly: I don't have time, energy or inclination to go look it up.

If something that someone has said either to you or about you on an internet message board so adversely effects your psyche, you might just be too involved in an internet message board community. You might want take a step back.
Good grief--does anyone on here know you personally? Do you care that a bunch of strangers think you are racist, or a homophobe or a beotch? I'm going to have to come to CJ's defense as I just went back and reread the uniform thread as I thought every thing was going good in it and thought I had missed something. In that thread. ILL You took offense to what CJ said about long hair and you REPLIED to her post. thus there was no way she was "Pointing " you out or your son. CJ didn't even know per the thread your son had long hair till you posted UNDER hers commenting on it. you also went on to restate what she felt about sloppy dress= sloppy minds or something to this effect. But either way ILL you are the one that stated the debate with her comment and are now trying to point the finger at her she attacked you on that thread.I thought and I usually don't like to get in the middle of these fights, But I do however feel this is unfair to say she attacked you and your son when in fact, YOU are the one that posted the 1st negatived comment and it was to wards her not the other way around.

Don't mean to pick but a right is a right and a wrong is a wrong and in this case you are wrong about that uniform thread.
Came back to say, I feel there's a lot and I do mean A LOT of going back and forth between some members here. It she said I said, then I said they said stuff seems to childish to me. I think the fingers point in BOTH directions and no one is any less at fault than their accusers. or at least this is how it seems to me.

But everyone here knows it is me. So tell me again who is starting trouble. Again at this point as Kathytheshopper said she knows who are the true trouble makers here and I am not one. What I care about Marilynk is that people play fairly on here. We are supposed to be adults yet there is a lot of playground antics on here and a lot of "teachers pets" as mentioned by other posters. There are stated rules that aren't followed and there are a few people on here trying to get clarification. Do I lose any sleep over this? Heck no. Do I keep a "list"? Heck no. I just spent about 5 minutes pulling out some of my old posts. I'm sure you've gone back and looked at your old posts before. Not a big deal.

I do recall the picture, but to be honest ILL I really didn't know for whom it was posted as there was a lot of fighting going on in the thread. I also posted in that thread because I thought the picture meant Jackass troll since it looked to me like a horse. and I did take that picture to mean just that.
As far as the
lesbian marriage deal went, I didn't posted in that thread or either I don't recall me replying in that thread . I don't know what I would had said about it. ILL I will admit you do get a lot of bashing at times from members here, do I believe all of it's fair, no not always. But on the same hand ILL you still have not learn
to just leave it alone. when you reply back to people you know already are "looking" for you to reply back that keeps the battle going. but thats not to say you are at total fault as it does take 2 to fight. I forgot to say ILL I didn't see the comments about starving and dying, But I wouldn't have taken that as a comment for you to do this. I would have thought on the lines of If you don't feed the trolls they will die = don't fight back and they will leave = starve and die.

And, for what it's worth, CJ was probably avoiding saying your name so as NOT to make it a personal attack. I think she (like many others) just liked the rep system, and can't believe it's gone due to one person.

Against my better judgment, I will add that the "don't feed the troll, let it die" picture was simply a picture posting to someone else mentioning trolls. It was a generic response on the topic of trolls.....trolls are motivated (fed) by the controversy, so it is best to ignore (not feed) them and they will go away (die). It wasn't aimed at anyone in particular, and especially not ILL, because I personally don't believe that ILL is a troll. I don't think she behaves as she does to get a rise out of people; she just is what she is. So....that was not aimed at you, ILL....please, please, please stop taking everything I say personally. (The uniform thread is yet ANOTHER example of that). Thank you for explaining it, sunsetbeach.

Similarly, the "America is immigrants" post was not a slam but I've already explained that.
