Where would you go on vacation?

Trying to do something with the kids.. We live in GA and do not want to do Disney type stuff. We lived outside Orlando for 5 years.

We went to Gatlinburg this past fall to show them the mountains.

Camping type stuff is COMPLETELY out

What places.... do you enjoy going with your families?

We have been to Williamsburg, Va several times. It is a great family vacation destination with Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown Settlement, Yorktown Victory Center and Busch Gardens all within a few miles of each other. When we decide to stick near home, we usually rent a camp for a week or borrow my in laws camp. Maine has some beautiful, peaceful lakes...

I live on Oak Island in North Carolina. We use to always vacation here when I was a child. It's a family-oriented beach area, with fishing, clamming, crabbing, shell collecting, kayaking, of course swimming - we have a couple of mini - golf places and great restaurants. You can rent ocean front houses relatively cheaply (comparatively speaking). We have a skate park (for skate boarding, not roller skating), a fishing pier, quiet beaches and beautiful sunrises and sunsets. This is NOT the place to go if you're looking for theme-park-y type stuff and/or night life. We have three local lighthouses (two that you can actually go inside), two ferrys (a passenger ferry and one for passengers and cars) and lots of Civil War historical sites (including Fort Caswell, which is really neat). We have a small maritime museum and plenty of ghost stories.

We're about an hour's drive from Myrtle Beach, if you want to make a day trip to do something more "touristy" and about 45 minutes from Wilmington, our closest "big" city. There's tons of shopping in Wilmington, and the USS North Carolina is docked there as well. There's also a really nice aquarium.

We've had lots of movies filmed locally, including "Secret Life of Bees", "Nights in Rodanthe", "Weekend at Bernie's", "Crimes of the Heart" and tons more. Anyone remember the show "Surface"? It only lasted one season, but most of it was filmed here. We used to watch the productions for fun. My daughter was an extra My point being, there are some pretty cool celebrity sightings here, if you're into that kind of thing.

Despite all of the "movie-stuff", the location in general is very, very quiet. Most of the time. During the week of July 4th, we have the third largest fireworks display on the east coast (or so I'm told). No one plans to go anywhere quickly during that week.

If this interests you at all, please feel free to contact me and I'll give you additional information.

We live in Texas, and while I think it's the greatest state anywhere, I would not recommend coming here in the summer unless you like it meltingly hot.

We are going to the San Diego area this summer. We are staying in Carlsbad so that my kids can go to the beach, Legoland, and the San Diego Zoo among other things.

Let us know what you pick.

If you are wanting to drive somewhere, I'd say Gulf Shores or Destin.

If you can afford it, I'd take them to California- San Francisco,Montery..those types of places. San Diego is great too.

It all depends on the kids ages.

When we lived in near Atlanta our favorite place to go (less than 6 hours) was Myrtle Beach. It's a great place, fun stuff to do (day and night) for adults and children and some of the best places to eat.
Sanibel is such a peaceful place to go and Ding Darling is a great place to spend some time.
If you are looking for a drive (and did it 4 times) from Atl it is 10 hours in the car to come to DC. DC you can go up in hotel price since all the attractions are free.
Have fun.

I am for DC too. If you stay in Maryland or Virginia, you can cut the cost of the hotel. You can take the metro in to the monuments.

I agree with those suggesting DC or the NC/SC shore....both would make nice family vacations.

Going in another direction, what about New Orleans?

There is a Hyatt in Rosslyn (sp) VA that we have stayed at. Nice hotel, great rates and it is across the street from the first metro stop in VA.
If you would like info you can email me at gotjenks45@verizon.net
As the above poster said I think that N.O. would be great fun.

My sister lives just outside of DC, and the kids love it! The museums and zoo are wonderful.

We have considered Louisana.. but agree summer is bad enough in S. GA can't imagine going to La in June

Thanks for the ideas!

I would stay away from NO,Louisiana right now. I just watched a report on TV that said, since the National Guard pulled the last of the 100 troops out crime has went WAY up. Before the crime rate wasn't that bad as troops were walking the beat on the streets to keep crime down.. Now thats to NOT say NO is a bad place, I just think it will take time for the police force to regroup as a whole now that there's no extra help.

Since you don't like camping I 'm lost for what I can suggest. Have you ever traveled in the Mountains of VA ? what about PA ? The battle fields there are full of history and more. I loved it.

Good luck and have fun fun fun where ever you choose.

I grew up in the NO area. You do not want to go there in the summer. It is dry here in Georgia compared to Louisiana. LA is like Fla (and worse) as far as humidity goes. Plus, to me, NO is more of an adult place to go....not as much for kids to do.

Josieann~then DC it shall be PLUS you get to visit with family.
I must make ONE more suggestion. If you are even "thinking" about coming up here contact your rep or congressman NOW so they can get you on tours. .: United States Senator Saxby Chambliss :: Welcome :. then on the left side you will see "How may I help you?" Then there is another box that will say Visiting DC and then it lists all of the places that you can get a tour with through him. If his office says they cannot get something for you then contact your state rep. (I did that this past week for tickets to Congress. One said they could not and then I went to another and in less than 10 minutes I had a tour date booked) Also, have your family in the area contact thier reps as well if you have no luck with your Georgia officials.

I'll add another vote for the DC area, as long as the kids aren't tiny.

I only say that because every time I go to a museum I always see tiny kids that look like they're bored out of their minds and would be much happier at a playground(or even a kids museum) instead of looking at art or whatever. But I do think museuem are wonderful for kids that are actually old enough to understand what they're looking at.

New Orleans is a great place for adults and also for kids! There is SO much more to this area than just the Quarter. The zoo is wonderful, riverboat rides are fun and educational, and I love the aquarium. I agree with the poster who said not to come here in the summer...it's humid and HOT...but spring is a great time. There's Jazz Fest, which is unbeatable for music lovers; the French Quarter Fest, and lot of stuff going on on the northshore. As far a crime...it's like any large city; you just have to play it smart.--Marilou
How about Amelia Island, FL, and Cumberland Island, GA--awesome and beautiful places to stay and visit. We stayed at Elizabeth Pointe Lodge (a great B&B) on Amelia and then spent the day at Cumberland Island--wild horses, an amazing beach with seashells galore (we were the ONLY ones on the beach), and even manatees.
