I am a teacher and I LOVE my job, but it is not for everyone. It does not feel like work to me at all. I see/hear new things from my children every day that make me smile and touch my heart, or make me laugh a lot!

My job can be very interesting at times. I work at home as a legal transcript editor. Court reporters send me their files through e-mail from depositions or court proceedings, and I edit them for grammar, punctuation, formatting, etc. If they are not familiar with the name of something, I will research that and make the necessary corrections. If their steno does not translate over to English, I translate it for them, using specialized software. I get to hear some interesting things. Most of the court reporters I have worked with are in Los Angeles, so I get some famous divorce cases, but I mostly do a lot of workers' compensation cases. I've done some criminal work, quite a bit of medical malpractice, asbestos abatement, and other civil cases. Now, my daughter has a very cool job. She's an engineer in the Coast Guard, stationed at the USCG Academy in Connecticut. She's stationed aboard the Eagle. She has been sailing all over since she was stationed aboard the Eagle. She has been up and down the East Coast, down and through the Panama Canal twice, all over Mexico, and up the West Coast all the way to Victoria, BC. On their way back, they sailed down to the Galapagos Islands. She is scheduled to sail to Europe in two weeks, but she just got orders that both her and her Coastie husband will be stationed in the San Francisco area soon, so she'll probably miss sailing to Europe. Here's a photo of her ship, and you can see her up in the rigging in this video at the 1:14 mark. YouTube - Coast Guard Cutter Barque Eagle 2008 summer cruise Don't get me started. I'll go on and on about how proud we are of her!

| He's only ever gone for a day at a time right now. Once the kids are all gone, we're hoping to find a big boat for him to captain and me to steward - you know, like in the movie Fool's Gold? That would be the dream life for me. I work as his First Mate in the summer sometimes, and I really enjoy it. He goes anywhere from just a few miles offshore to 60 miles offshore. He's got some really neat stories to tell.

My son in law has a cool job. He is a marine engineer and works for Exxon. He works two months on, and two months off. He has been all over the world. He went to school at a local school (Maine Maritime Academy), he was lucky enough to have a job secured before he even graduated. This is his second year, and for the most part he loves his job. His last time out to sea, his run was from California to Alaska. One of his trips out included Japan. He has been to Ireland, England, Nassua, France....more places than I will ever see in my lifetime. Its not something he will do forever, but for now....it is a great experience for him.

My entire career has been in the area of semiconductor design and test; mostly in the area of high-performance microprocessors. Cool? I don't know about that, but it's been steady work and has provided a lot of opportunity for innovation and constant learning. It's not for everyone, though. ![]() cj/

I don't have a cool job now (I'm a children's librarian) but I did when I was younger. I was a zookeeper at a local zoo from 1984-1991. I left when my DD was born. My husband was laid off a year later so from 1992-2000 I worked as an animal trainer in an amusement park. Oh, the stories I could tell! I absolutely loved, loved, loved both those jobs!! Unfortunately working in both those settings means working weekends & holidays and with children it became too hard. So I made the decision to go back to school and change careers. But, oh, how I miss those days and wish I could go back to working with exotic animals.
