Question What Do You Remember (if anything) About The...

Bicentennial?

I was 27. My son was 17 months old and I was pregnant with my daughter. We spent the day in Plymouth, MA which is where I lived at the time. My mother and father were with us plus some of my ex-husband's relatives.

The weather was perfect! During the day Plymouth had a really big parade and that night there were fireworks. I remember the town painted all the fire hydrants to look like people.

Not my photo.

I'm sure I still have photos from that day somewhere but I need to get a scanner so I can get them on the computer.

It was a really fun event!

I don't remember the particular day, but that year was the year I graduated from high school and we got special red/white/blue tassles with the year on them (as a keepsake, not to wear) in addition to the regular school colored ones to wear on the graduation caps. I still have mine. Our town also did the patriotic painting of the fire hydrants that year. Our school buried some capsule that year, I remember that.

I had a bicentennial notebook, which I thought was so trendy back then!! I thought I was the envy of everyone in 5th grade with my red/white/blue notebook!

I remember stuff on TV, such as the tall ship parade. I was in first grade at the time.

I remember my dad getting a bunch of fireworks and there was one called a roman candle and I was sure that it was the biggest firework in the world.

I was only 5 at the time so it was the biggest firework I'd ever seen.

Other than that I don't recall too much.

I remember that at our brownie scout meetings we learned to embroider like Betsy Ross and I embroidered my cloth right to my jeans! I had the hoop w/the fabric stretched across it on my knee for support as I was doing my stitches, and 'picked up' my jeans fabric with the needle. Oops!

We were embroidering things like eagles and other symbols of America onto the backs of kercheif-like, shawl-like things we were with our long dresses at the bi-centennial party!

I saw the tall ships at the inner harbor in Baltimore Maryland.
My sil was expecting her first son any day and that added to our excitement.

I remember the Statue of Liberty being repaired for the big event. She was falling apart. I remember watching the boats and ships in the harbors of all ports. I was 24 and married.

I was 15. All I remember is the bicentennial quarter. I don't like parades, so if there was one, I didn't see it.

I was six. The only thing I remember is getting a glass bank shaped like the Liberty Bell as a present from my mom. The next time I go to my dad's house, I'm going to have to look around and see if it's there. I have no other memories regarding the celebration, and I'm not sure how close to the celebration I was given the bank. Oh - and I remember loving the quarters - I thought they were really neat.

I just remember the quarter, and everyone wearing Bicentennial t-shirts, bumper stickers and red/white/blue being very fashionable. I really don't remember much else.

I also graduated in 1976. We didn't have red, white, and blue tassles, but we had a red, white and blue ribbon around our necks. I can't remember anything special that my city did, but I can't even remember what I had for dinner last night. lol

I was 10 that year and my mom was redecorating and I somehow convinced her that it would be a great idea to let me have bicentennial wall paper in my room! What was wrong with her!!?? It had drums and eagles among other things, and it was hideously ugly.

I was 16. We had just moved to rural Va. when my dad retired from the Washington, DC police dept . I was sitting in the bleachers of the county fair, watching fireworks. I remember I was happy those "Bicentenial moments " were finally going to go off the air. They annoyed me so. Remember them ? Sorta like 10 second commercials about America.

I was 21 and had been married two years. Gosh, I was so young.

I really don't remember much about the day, though.

I was 26 and pregnant with my daughter. I was out in the middle of Boston Harbor(include accent) on a tub boat having a party with the tall ships.

I was 12. I remember the bicentennial quarter. I saved every one I got in change for a while and refused to spend them! But after a while it got impractical and so I started spending them again.
