My neighbor burns leaves ALL the time. I am so scared that hers will get away from her as well. Fires have a mind of their own. I'm glad everything is ok!

The spring is the most hazardous time for brush fires! We aren't allowed to burn in NJ and there are still a lot of fires caused by throwing cigarettes out the window, parking on pine needles, sparks from a chimney, lightning, etc. PS Glad everyone is ok!

Wow glad no more damage that their was. My neighbor did that to me a couple years ago, my driveway is 600 feet long up a hill. He set some leaves on fire during the day, and just after my husband left for work second ****, I happened to walk out the back door and noticed that the smoke seemed to be coming up behind my barn. I ran out there and the whole back of my pasture was on fire and headed up the hill to the barn. I ran to the guy's house that set the fire and he was GONE. I called the fire dept, and they kept running and up down the road as there were several people burhing brush. Finally got thru to them exactly where I was and YES my woods were on fire - I realized then that the way the land lays, no one woulda seen the fire till my barn was gone and my house was on fire. Needles to say that scared the crap outta me, if I had gone to Wal Mart after hubby left for work, I woudln't have had anything left. They got mine put out pretty quickly, but had to call in the forestry sevice with a dozier to put the woods out on the other side of the neighbor. You can bet, that I watch him like a hawk if I see even a puff of smoke on his side of the fence.

Okay, I have a neighbor that literally burns everything! I am guessing he is not the smartest man in the world. I was talking to his wife one day and she had mentioned that they had gotten new furniture for their girls' rooms. I asked her if she took the old stuff to the thrift store and she said no. He had just burned it all in the backyard. I guess while he was back there he also burned their old pool table. He also had a huge pile of extra shingles from his roof that sat by his driveway. He lit those up one day. It turned into a pile of melted shingles. I think he realized later that he maybe should have kept those for just in case. Some people!

I tried to burn down the neighborhood once. I only succeeded in burning up my yard and parts of two of my neighbors' yards though. We were burning leaves the day before (Sunday) and Monday I went grocery shopping only to come home and find three yards in flames. Not my best day. |

Man, I wish they would outlaw this practice and the stupid outdoor chimney things too. I think the yard waste burning is always a fire hazard, and I'm sure its environmentally unfriendly (compared to composting). Every nice day, our stupid neighbors have to torch something in that chimney thing. So, we can never open our windows because the air outside is clogged with smoke.

A lot of the people in this small town feel it's okay to burn everything--yard waste, plastic, paper, whatever--just to save the $12 a month it costs to get garbage service. It's disgusting and physically harmful in more ways than one.

In my opinion, it is a low class, trashy practice to burn things. I had a neighbor once who burnt his painted deck that they were tearing out. It was an older deck with lead paint, most likely. Had to call the fire dep't to come talk to him.

more when a neighbor isnt careful and loses control. I remember burning off fields with grandparents when i was younger, Grandpa called the forestry and told them when, where and how long it'd be going on. We didnt just leave them we followed along behind the fire to knock out embers. though most times i'd be sitting in the truck to take off to the house if we needed help <no cells then>

I had no idea that I was low class and trashy.......we rather enjoy our twice yearly tree-branch-brush bonfire and an occasional marshmallow roasting on the chiminea......but white trash is like that I guess. No regard for anyone else or outward appearances ..... ![]() cj/

Here it's against the law to burn anything other than "yard waste". I emailed DHEC about my neighbors burning trash.. that stuff is nasty.. the fumes from it is toxic! Y'll should check to make sure it's legal in your area.

We have an outdoor firepit, dh burns actual logs in it and not trash/plastic/etc. There are restrictions in our state on burning so before using it dh always must check news or weather and find out if it's a blue or red advisory day. If there's a lot of pollution in the air then the state deems it a 'red' day and no one is allowed to burn anything. In our city the biggest problem with violations of the burn policy isn't firepits or anything outdoors, but indoor wood fireplaces. Those are not allowed on 'red' days either but people will run them all day long regardless.
