Question NEED HELP from Crafters re: Tulip Paint

I am doing the fronts of my daughters softball spirit shirts.
I am NOT a crafty person but was asked and could not say no.
HELP is needed!!
On the back of the Tulip paints that we got it says to "prewash fabric".
WHY?
I am fine on washing the t-shirts but can I hang them up to dry. (I do not normally dry my clothes).
Would it be okay to wash the t-shirts and just hang them up to dry?
Thanks in advance to any speedy replies.
Robin

The prewash is to wash out any over dying of the fabric and for shrinkage. If you didn't prewash it the color could fade and the shirt shrink.
Air drying would be fine I would think.

The washing also removes the "sizing" that is on new fabrics that could prevent the adherence of any paints.

You need to wash the shirts to get rid of all the chemicals used to make the clothes. DO NOT use fabric softener when you wash the shirts also. Line drying is fine.

Thank you everyone!!
I am about to go hang them up and then tomorrow I have to attempt to, without any mistakes, do a peace love softball symbol on the fronts.
It was so hard to find shirts tonight that we HAD to buy white shirts instead of a green shade.
Thanks again.

I used to do this a lot for my kids when they were little (Dora, Bob the builder, Pokemon, etc). Now I only do birthday T's. A simple way to a uniform design is to xerox the design you want and very lightly outline the design with fabric paint ON THE PAPER. Then, use the paper as a stamp onto the shirt. Then you just have to color in the lines and then outline. Try the technique out on a pc. of paper first to see if it works for you.

Make sure you put a pc of cardboard inside the shirt before you paint because the paint will bleed through.

Also, I use a paint brush to paint the fabric paint on large areas. I've never liked the way fabric paint washes when it's put on thick. It always cracks and starts to peel.

HTH~
