Oh yes. We lived on a hilly street that had a big dip at the bottom and then climbed up. On that end of the street was this old brick house that sat on the hill that a well in the yard and old trees, etc... It was spooky looking and there were all these old tales about how someone died in the well. We went there once to look at a piano that was for sale and it was rainy and windy and I was scared to death! I sat in the car with my brother. lol Makes me chuckle now but it was scary then!

Yeah. We had a lady who lived up a long driveway on a hill. She always wore a ton of make-up and smoked a cigarette from a long holder. When we went trick-or-treating, we always dared each other to go up there. It was rumored that there were bodies buried under the little shed at the foot of her driveway. She had a doorbell that was like the one on "The Adam's Family." You pulled a doorknob type thing towards you and it rang a bell inside.

*The Haunted Farm* in Burnsville, MN, in the early to mid 60's. No kid worth his or her salt failed to take up the dare to go up to that abandoned old farm and at least open the front door (and there had to be at least 2 witnesses to the event ;-) Once we'd done that we were immune to taunts about going there and were allowed to take a wide berth around for the rest of childhood w/out being called chicken. One of my brothers and I found a pregnant cat there that we took home and hid in the garage for weeks, even after she had her 2 kittens, before our parents discovered them. They were mad that we'd hidden cats in the garage, but I think they were more appalled that we got them from the haunted farm ;-) My brother terrorized me all throughout childhood w/various scary stories, but the haunted farm never bothered me the way it did most kids. I loved how removed it was from everything else, how isolated and far away it was from everything, and I'd often go there and sit in the overgrown yard and enjoy the peace and quiet. For my own kids, at one place we lived we had a house set back in a bend in the road (it was rural), that was always called *the cat lady's house* because many cats could always be seen on the porch and wandering the yard and adjacent woods. The paint was peeling and the house itself musta been at least a hundred years old. One day a few of my kids and I happened to actually meet the cat lady because we found a stray cat we thought might belong to her bunch. The cat lady was one of the coolest women I've ever met. She showed us around her huge property that was loaded with secret gardens she'd created amongst all the woods and overgrowth, each one had some special seating and some piece of sculpture or other artwork. She showed us how to tell where deer would lie down and which animal tracks were from fox, deer, raccoon, etc. When she died I was surprised to see in her obit how old she was, she seemed younger to me, and also surprised to find she had been a Lt. Col. in the army. |

The area I grew up in has many old sea captains homes, said to be haunted. One of them looked like a castle, and it was rumored that Stephen King used it as the house from the book Carrie. One of the teenagers that lived at the house had long red hair, and wore a big long black cape to school. I remember thinking she was really different and many of the students were scared of her. Of course...having one of the all time best scary story writers living in our area makes for many rumors...
