Sitcoms from the 60's and 70's..when you watched...

Did those shows make you think you and your family were normal ? Or did you watch and say..."Man, we must be screwed up, we never eat roast beef and talk at the dinner table, with dad in a suit".

I thought the kids and family on " Family Affair" were prissy and spoiled. I did not relate to them. " Courtship of Eddie's father"..I thought Eddie was a regular type kid. I felt his show was something I could relate to.

Kill me now as far as "Father Knows best" was concerned..Kitten and princess..blech..

"Leave it to Beaver," I felt Wally was a kiss up, the mom to apron-string"ey"..and Beaver a bit weird..there house was always too clean .

"Dennis the Menace"..I loved that show..that was how I'd be as a tomboy child..outside playing cowboys , cops..or in the park by the fountain..in a tree house..always in trouble whenever I did something and a grownup saw me..

The only weekly sitcom I ever thought resembled my life was "Roseanne". And I always wished I had the type of father who would call me "kitten".

I think Roseanne is the most honest of all those shows! I watched Beaver, Family Affair, Brady Bunch, Happy Days, Father Knows Best, etrc... I don't rememebr ever comparing my family to those on tv though, even when I was little.

I always wanted a bunch of brothers and sisters like on The Brady Bunch. I thought my family was normal... we ate dinner every night at 6 and we sat at the table and talked. My parents were in their mid 30s when they had me.. maybe that's why.

I loved all those shows. I thought the kids on Family Affair were dips, but my sister and I had a great time making fun of them. (I almost shot coffee out my nose when I was listening to David Sedaris recently and he compared his eyeglasses to those worn by "Mrs. Beasley.")

I thought my family was normal. We had a big family. We ate dinner every night at 6:30 and talked. No singing or whistling at the table! Dad wore a suit to work (Once he was home, he got out of it asap).

All in the Family was probably our household favorite. Talk about pushing the envelope...just our style.

We were a Leave It to Beaver family in the early days though. Dad wore a suit to work. We ate in the formal dining room every night. Mom made us matching dresses and she wore cute little outfits with "shells" for tops.....and had a beehive type hairdo.

Saturday mornings were for Sky King, Circus Boy (w/Mickey Dolenz when he was a kid), My Friend Flicka, Tarzan, and Roy Rogers. I was in love with ole Roy, hated Dale Evans cuz she was married to him.

Other shows I remember are:
I Love Lucy
That Girl
My Mother the Car
Car 54 (loved that one!)
The Mothers-in Law
Bonanza
Wonderful World of Color (Walt Disney's Sunday night show)
Get Smart
Rat Patrol
Wild, Wild West
Partridge Family ( I wanted to be Laurie & wanted Keith to be my boyfriend)
Bewitched
Father Knows Best
Marcus Welby
Dr, Kildare (was in love w/him as a kid)
Ben Casey (was almost as in love with him as I was w/Roy Rogers)
Peyton Place (wasn't allowed to watch it at home, but did when I babysat ;-)
The Midnight Special (another one I liked watching when babysitting
Love Boat
Oh, and the Movie of the week, I think it was on Tues. nights, it was usually something creepy like *Daughter of the Mind*.
I am a tv geek ;-)

My Mom had a thing for Hoss from Bonanza
My favorite memory was listening to radio shows laying in bed falling asleep. I think one was called the Squeaky Door? I remember a door always squeaked at the beginning. I miss those!

Ooooh, baby HOSS! I loved him! But I also loved Lil Joe and Adam, any of those Cartwright boys coulda parked their boots for me ;-)

Doctor shows - there seemed to be more, and better ones, back in the day. Less technical to be sure, but those olden day docs were muy dreamy, weren't they?

Is this only my middle aged memory? I loved Chicago Hope and like ER, but that's about it.
The closest I can come nowadays are shows like Bones or CSI, still not the same as Marcus Welby or Ben Casey or Dr. (be fool, my stillish heart) Kildare.

I remember thinking that the people on the shows were weird because they sat down and ate dinner as a family with dessert and everything. That was just crazy.

My dad worked 2nd shift, 3pm-11pm, for as long as I have memory. So it was just my mom, my sister and myself at home at dinnertime and if you think my mom was going to cook a full meal just for the two of us kids, you got another think coming! We ate things like mac and cheese, frozen pizza, fish sticks, etc. Sometimes we just had cereal. But we NEVER had a full sit down meal during the week, that only happened on Sunday.

We always sat down at the dinner table same time every night. Weekends my sister and I stayed over our grandparents house and woke up saturday morning to a good breakfast and black and white cartoons.

Sunday was spent going to Mass and the grandparents for early afternoon dinner.

Woke up every morning to my mom yelling up the stairs RISE AND SHINE.

[i] loved my childhood we didnt have alot of money but we didnt know it. (thanks mom and dad where ever you are)
