Had surgery today, need some good thoughts and prayers

My Dh and I had our surgeries today. His went well and he is here at home sleeping comfortably. I just got home an hour ago we have been at the hospital since 7 am this morning. I am tired.

I went in this morning to have some tubes in my ears replaced because I have had some severe hearing loss, pressure and fluid in my ears for the past few months. This is a simple procedure and I have had it done many times in the past with instant results afterwards and almost full hearing restored as soon as I wake up.

When I woke up today I noticed that my right ear still felt like it had fluid in it and I still could not hear. I am only able to hear a little bit and only if the person is facing me and I can basically see what they are saying.

Sitting in recovery I didn't give it much thought as I figured since I had so much fluid that it was just going to take a few extra days to clear up.

As I said earlier myself and my husband both were operated on today. I went first and he went in the OR right after I came out. We were done by the same Dr. and since mine was a simple procedure there was no issue with us being done on the same day. I must say we were the talk of the surgery center today lol.

Anyways after I had been in recovery for a bit our Dr. came in to talk to me. She has done most of my ear surgeries and I usually don't see her afterwards until I go to the office for my post surgery update but when I saw her I figured she was just coming to update my on my DH since he was after me. She told me DH was out of surgery and he was fine (whew) but.... when she did mine it did not go as planned.

When she got in there with the microscope and got the old tubes out of my ear canal (they weren't even in the ear drum anymore) she could see that my left eardrum was perforated with a large hole and they could not even insert the tube because it wouldn't hold. My right eardrum has retracted into my middle ear. She did get a tube into my right ear but does expect it to hold.

The damage to my ears is much more than she anticipated and may not be reversible. The hearing loss I have now maybe permanent and could get worse. She did a procedure on my left eardrum to hopefully stimulate it to repair its self. If the procedure works I may get some of my hearing back in that ear. If it doesn't work I will have to have a graft to try and repair the eardrum and hope that it holds. I will know in 3 weeks if the stimulation worked.

My right ear we are not sure what course to go with at this point. She is hoping the tube will stay and help the pressure so that it does not retract in any further and adhere its self to the bones in my ear. The hearing loss in that ear also maybe permanent. We wont know until I go back and have my hearing checked in 3 weeks.

My husband has been so out of it I have not even been able to tell him about my surgery. I am sitting here at home kind of feeling sorry for myself and have no one to talk to about it. I am scared I may go deaf. I know there are so many worse things that could happen to me in my life but I can't help it I am afraid of losing my hearing.

If everyone could just cross their fingers for me that in 3 weeks my ears heal themselves I would really appreciated it.

Thank you for listening to me I am sorry this is so long.

Two of my children had severe problems with their ears. They both had mastoditis which is not something that people get now days with antibodics. Long story short they both have perfect hearing today. Their is so much they can do now. They both had eardrums rebuilt. Listen to your doctor and things should be ok.

Please know that we pray for a speedy recovery for you and your hubby. I would get on the internet and do as much searching of my condition and the options that are out there for your condition. Go to health chats concerning ear problems as well. You may discover you own next step in recovery incase things do not go as you would like. Be agressive these are your ears and you may make a difference for yourself. Don't give up hope new medical discoverys are made every day. Bless you and I will be waiting to see your post when you all healed.

Hi and thank you for asking.

We are doing better today. My husband is still sleeping off his surgery and is doing well. I haven't been able to talk to him about what is going on yet but that is ok.

I am better. I think I needed to get over the initial shock of what she told me and vent a little. Now that it has sunk in I am ok with it. As I said in my original post there are a lot worse things that could happen to me in the long run.

The Dr.s office called me yesterday and wanted to schedule the procedure now. I told the lady who called that I thought my Dr. wanted to wait a couple of weeks and see if the procedure she did on Tuesday worked first. Now I am a little confused. I told the lady I wanted to see my Dr. before I scheduled anything. She was going to have me come in on Monday but I am waiting until the 13th to go so that I can give it close to the 3 weeks my Dr. said while I was in recovery. I also told the lady to have my Dr. call me and if I speak to her and she tells me to come in sooner or to schedule the procedure I will but I don't want to do anything without speaking to her first and getting some clarification.

So that is where I stand right now. I am waiting for the Dr. to call me back and I am also just taking care of my husband I can't do anything until he is back up and running. He is my main concern right now.

A, you know I'm praying to Jimmy Choo (the ultimate god) for you! Have you gotten any second opinions or anything yet? There are so many cutting edge things out there that maybe there's something awesome to make your hearing 100%.

When I was in college, I had to have major reconstructive surgery on my nose and Mass General had a visiting doctor who was one of the top reconstructive guys in the world. I was amazed at the job he was able to do. Not that you've said your not happy with your dr, but I'd want to consider all my options pretty carefully before scheduling any more surgeries.

You know where to find me if you need me!!!

Sorry to hear what you thought would be a routine procedure turned out so be very complicated. I think you will feel even better after you get clarification from your Dr. Hoping for the best possible outcome for you. Take care of yourself.
