Question best-tasting healthy cereal

DH has agreed to try eating a healthy cereal for breakfast instead of the doughnuts he loves so much.

I would like some opinions on what you think is the absolutely healthiest cereal on the market that tastes good?

I very much dislike sugary cereals, so I pretty much stick to the no or very low sugar cereals. I love grape-nuts, but most people probably want a little more sugar than that. One of the best low sugar cereals I have had is Quaker Oatmeal Squares, very crunchy and delicious. I also like Rice Krispies and Kix.

I love Kashi Good Friends, but if he's used to donuts, it would probably be too "sticks and rocks" for him.

From donuts,,,you have to move slowly. I LOVE Frosted Mini Wheats Strawberry...or the plain FMW and I add in a banana or blueberries.

You know if you feed him twigs, he will be stopping for that donut. I find that a bowl of FMW holds me the whole morning until lunch

I like Grape Nuts; but, he won't. I like the Kashi cereals. Why don't you try Great Grains from Post? They're fairly sweet. My favorite is date with pecans.

My husband loves cereal he refuses to eat the Kashi although I love certain varieties of it. He says it's too hard and he doesn't want to have to wait 15 minutes for the milk to soak in.

I just look through the regular brands for ones without High Fructose Corn Syrup or when it's down way low on the list.

FYI anything "frosted" or "yogurt covered" generally just means more sugar or HFCS. You might make your own cereal by taking corn flakes and adding dried or fresh berries or other fruits. You can add nuts too if you want.

Grapenuts has 4 sugar grams. Cheerios has only one and to me the taste is way better. It is not say, healthy, but not bad for you either. I love cheerios!

How about good old oatmeal? It's very good for you and much cheaper than cereal?

I started eating regular (not instant) oatmeal about a year ago. I use about 3/4 cup of oats and just under 1 1/2 cups of water, microwave it for 3 and a quarter minutes and then start adding stuff. Currently I'm using 3 heaping tablespoons of brown sugar, two of applesauce and mixing in strawberries and bananas. I also add some milk just before serving to make it more moist and cool it down a bit. It's really delicious.

The best part, in the past year my cholesterol has dropped from 248 to 197 and I'm not on any cholesterol medication. Even my doctor says the oatmeal did it.

Indeed!

I like Kellogg's Raisin Bran or Special K Vanilla Almond cereal.

Not the healthiest out there, but definitely better for you than donuts.

Most cereals would have to be more healthy than donuts. Between the frying and all the sugar donuts are pretty bad. I can't think of any cereal that is deep fried, lol!

Don't scare the poor man his first time out, start him out slowly with something like frosted mini wheats. The blueberry ones are pretty tasty. Something like Kashi may just push him over the egde and back into the arms of lady donut.

Once he's doing ok with frosted mini wheats and the like you can start adding other cereals that are more "hard core healthy".

Just keep telling yourself that just about any cereal is more healthy than a donut........

Fiber One Honey Clusters are lightly sweetened crunchy flakes. My doctor recommended this cereal as a good source of fiber. I like to eat yogurt parfaits for breakfast. I layer fresh berries, yogurt and cereal in a glass or bowl. Maybe you can occasionally make your husband some low fat muffins as a little treat. He might get tired of eating cereal every day and you don't want him to sneak a donut.

My daughter and I love the Kashi Cereals.......the crunch ones are good thrown in with some yogurt!

Start slow, and ease him into something. If he starts to feel cheated, it will be easy to slip back into donuts. Special K has tons of different flavors and Cheerios aren't bad either. Good Luck!

Most of the so called "healthy" cereals are LOOOOOOOADED with sugar! (better than a doughnut though) So check the sugar content. Cheerios is the one Dr. Oz is always recommending all the time and steel cut oatmeal(kind of a pain to cook!)...but my favorite is plain old spoon sized shredded wheat with a banana.

My less than healthy fav is Honey Bunches of Oats w/Almonds and I add raisins or dried cherries. I am not a big cereal eater at all, but plain bran flakes or plain spoon sized shredded wheat w/either raisins or strawberries or bananas or dried cherries (and sometimes almonds) thrown in are what I like. You can add any ole kind of dried fruit to healthy cereals and make em taste better, IMNSHO.
I like donuts, too, just don't eat em often. Okay, I actually *love* donuts, but they gotta be great donuts like bavarians filled with real custard or hot off the presses Krispy Kreme glazed donuts.
Yk, I didn't like cereal at all, never ate much of it as a kid, till I started adding fruit to it, and that's a win-win deal as far as fiber and vitamins go.
He might wanna try whole grain toast w/pb or pb&j as an alternate to cereal. Very filling, very nutritious
I have a killer recipe for a hot porridge made w/wild rice if you're interested.

I ate grape nuts for over 10 years when we were first married and then one day I was in Kroger and decided to try their brand called Nutty Nuggets. They were so terrible that then I couldn't even get grape nuts close to my lips for another 10 years. Now I'm back on grape nuts and love them.

We also love Quaker Oak Squares and Cracklin Oat bran. Can't do any of the fruity type cereals though.

No, I did not know about this!! I used to LOVE the triple berry Cheerios, but can't find them any more. They had a lot more sugar than the regular, but they were my favorite! I then tried the rice krispies with strawberries and it was the closest I could get......now I can't find those!!! I want my cereals back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A healthy kind of cereal that I serve my sugar loving kids is Annie's Organics - they have "healthy" versions of a lot of kids cereals which your sugar loving DH might like and also Enviro Kids - Peanut Butter crunch and things like that. Those are yummy and no added yuckies. HTH!

Oh, yum!!! Hope I can find them here. 9 grams of sugar is more than the 1 gram the plain ones have, but still not bad. The berry ones had more(oh, but I loved them so) Thanks. I am going to look today!

My kids love the Kashi Strawberry Fields and the EnviroKids Peanut Butter Crunch (it tastes like Captain Crunch). A great one that is pretty low in sugar but probably sweet enough for him to like going from doughnuts is Life. A box of Life will only last about a day in my house. . lol! I like the Apple Cinnamon Cheerios or the Honey Bunches of Oats (bannana nut crunch one I think it is). Also just about anything from Trader Joes is a hit in our house as well.

They are really good! However, I am a diabetic, so I cannot eat much of those Banana Nut Cheerios.

Groovygirl, on that Cheerios website (previously posted) they had Berry Burst Cheerios with strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. Would that be your triple berry Cheerios?

I like the Fiber One cereals but they make me fart too much. I eat lots of other fiber in my diet so I know it's not fiber in general that does this but just the fiber they use? Anyway, I love apple cinnamon oatmeal, honey nut cheerios (if regular cheerios aren't sweet enough), Cracklin Oat Bran (but it's got more fat in it...), and Enviokids cereals (panda puffs). We don't buy sugar cereals so my kids don't even know what they taste like. We also like the new smaller mini wheats (honey nut and chocolate). More sugar than I would like but good fiber and they are easy to eat as a snack (ie: no milk).

Triple Berry Burst Cheerios, 10.4-Ounce Box (Pack of 6): Amazon.com: Health & Personal Care

Amazon has them 6 boxes for just over $25. You get free shipping and no sales tax so if you like them that much, might be worth it

I love these too, BUT they are really not very healthy. One 3/4C serving has 221 cals., 7.6g of fat, 3.4g saturated fat, and 17.6g of sugar.

In comparison a Crispy Creme cake doughnut has 200 cals., 13g fat, 3g saturated fat, and 9g of sugar.

We are fans of Frosted Mini Wheats, Life (regular or cinnamon), Post Raisin Bran, Honey Nut Cheerios, Banana Nut Crunch, Honey Bunches of Oats w/Almonds, and Quaker Oat Squares. I consider these to be middle-of-the-road in terms of sugar....but don't really know for sure...just go with what we like. DS2 eats the FMW with a banana most days before school.....he says it sticks with him better than the egg sandwich that I make him on alternate days. Strange.

FWIW, have you ever looked at the portion size on cereal. We tend to eat WAY MORE than the recommended size!

OK, this was my favorite response!

Seriously, thanks for all the responses. I will pick up a couple different cereals and I'm sure I can find one he likes.

Cracklin Oat Bran- Yum, Yum, Yum! You can, and probably will, eat it by the handful
It has 6g of fiber, 15g of sugar and 7g of fat (3g saturated), so eat in moderation, but they are tasty little morsels!

Good luck!

I love that cereal, too. But it gets soggy really quick. When I buy it, we eat it dry as a snack. It's also good on yogurt.
