Oh, I have been there! First, it was backing up into my home. It was awful! I kept calling, they could not find my clean out vent. I finally got a supervisor and was in tears. My house smelled, we all had headaches, it was horrible. Anyway, he finally had the guys make me a new clean out. Now, it happens every so often, but it comes up through that clean out(it has a place to go now). I really don't know how to make you feel better, but if the line is clogged on the cities end, you are in luck....they will clean it out. Just pray that is where it is.

Thanks for the reply ![]() Our house is a side street off the main street but technically still the main st..if you can make sense out of that. We are about 500 ft from the main part of the road, but the actual part where it is happening is right on the road since it is technically part of the st. I am sure all that will get me no where though and the problem will be deemed on our end. I'm just dreading having to have this completly redone or something that we can't pay for..what the heck will I do then.

| Emergency services? Not to sound stupid, but why? At the very least I can call the water/sewer dept they have after hours and have came out right away when we had problems in our old rental. I certainly know it is an issue, but..

Please update with where they say the problem is. I might be able to give you some good advice. Last year, we had a pipe broken near the road but on our side, not the cities side. The bad thing was that we had to replace pipe under the driveway. Plumbers all gave estimates of the $5,000 to $6,000 range which did not include fixing the driveway after it was dug out (concrete driveway). My dad came down and did it with my dh and it took them about 2 days and cost less than $500. It was actually a very easy job, but the digging was a witch.

The guy just came and took a look and said as long as the inside is flushing ok (which everything is), that it can wait until tomorrow. So they are going to come back out tomorrow. We'll see what happens. He did point out a long patch all the way down the road from the main part that you can tell was re-done before. We'll see what happens.

I hope it's on the city's end and not yours. 2 years ago we had to replace our field lines (we have a septic tank ). cost 1,000 dollars. The company didn't tell us we needed a permit for the repairs and 1 year later it started flooding the yard again. well since there never was a permit issued for the repair we were screwed trying to get it the city to help make them repair it.The company has since gone under ( was told from the inspector they went out of business in 2007 ( thats when they did our repairs and I'm SURE thats why they didn't tell me we needed a permit because it takes sometimes a few days for the inspector to arrive and then he has to come recheck while the work is being done and come back when its finished before it can be covered with dirt.any hoot. 3 weeks ago I had to hire yet another company to come replace the lines at the tune of $ 2,000.00 !! and 75.00 for the permit. The man that owns the company gave us a break on the price due to him being out of work for 3 months and really needed some cash. The job would had been $ 3,000.00 PLUS 250.00 for gravel rocks. So far so good . They dug a pool size pit ( and I do mean pool size) over 25 feet wide by 52 feet long. My run off is a gravel pit LOL.... good luck and I sure hope its the city's end and not yours as this can become costly fast.

Don't panic! I came home from Christmas shopping this year to a TERRIBLE smell. I followed my nose and ended up in my basement that was covered in 2 inches of sewage. I first called the city. They will be able to tell you if it is them backing up. . if it is. . .not your problem. In my case it wasn't the main city sewer line backing up. I had to call a plumber. . .the 4th guy that came out told me he would clear the line for $140 and he would guarantee it. He did and then I called my homeowners. They covered ALL the damages but what the plumber charged to clear line. They came and cleaned everything up. . .I was actually thinking that it was cheaper than having someone come to clean my basement. . .which is what I got. So. . just breathe. .. if it's not the city your homeowner's should take care of it.

So they finally came out to the house today after 3 calls and 3 different guys (up the ladder) tell me that they have reviewed all the "maps" and that our road is considered a "private right of way", even though it is technically part of main street. They tried to blast it, but said it only partly cleared and something is obvioiusly broken. They said they will try to help determine where the problem is but they are not responsible for repair. They are saying they are not responsible for anything until about 500 ft up our road which our road is shared by 3 other families. Basically that means if it was what goes out to the "main road" it would be our responsibility to tear all that up and replace it? We don't know what to do. If they have no responsibility here then why do they maintain the road? They plow it all winter, and it's paved by the city. Our address is 123 main street, we even tried to make it a private right of way a year ago and were not allowed to. I was just looking at our homeowners online, but it doesn't have full details on there. We've never put a claim through before, but I don't know what else to do. I really want to know more about ensuring that the city really isn't responsible but I don't know how to "prove them wrong"..I mean of course they are not going to want to do it, so if they can get away with not doing it - they will.

Ugh! I don't know exactly what to tell you then. I would still call your homeowner's, explain the situation, and see what they have to say. They are probably experienced with your city and certainly have an interest in making the city responsible if they are. Let us know how that goes.

we owned a home once and the entire bathroom backed up. Even sewage in our tubs. We called the city to come out..it was about 8 at night and they still came out. The city said it looked like a root was in the line..we had to call the next day to see who's side it was on..ours or theirs. The next day the city came out, it was on ours for about an inch but the city still took care of it for us *Jacksonville, FL* ...turns out when they built our house, they just did not hook up the final lines very well.
