Butter or Margarine?

Does your family prefer butter or margarine? Why do you make that choice? Taste, health, cost or some other reason? I have both in my fridge. If I need spread, like on bread for grilled cheese I use margarine, I use butter for almost everything else. I like how easy margarine is to spread, but I am usually pretty hesitant to eat something that is created by science instead of nature. So there you have it, I'm willing to trade easy for (imo) health.

Both.

Pretty much same as you. I use margarine for spreadable stuff and butter for everything else.

We use country crock light or I can't believe it's not butter when we need spreadable and butter for baking and corn on the cob

if I use margarine in baking, it doesn't turn our nearly as well as with butter. Cookies fall flat, etc. I think it's because of the water content and I don't know how to best adjust the recipes to account for that. beckyandplacido, what margarine do you use in baking? Do you have the same problem as me?

Only real butter. I was raised on it and never changed. I don't like the plastic feel of anything else and HATE the taste.

I use stick butter for things like baking and mashed potatos. I use spreadable butter for bread and rolls. I use country crock to make a potato dish I make for some reason it does not taste right if I use real butter in it.

We use Fleishmans with olive oil tubs for spreading on bread because it is soft. We use Smart Balance tubs for other stuff like baked potatoes because it's a healthy spread, but it's hard.

I have been using margarine sticks for baking, but am in the process of switching to Smart Balance 50/50 blend sticks.

We use margarine because that is what my dh and I grew up on and like better. I do use butter for my Christmas baking.

Margarine for things like toast/bagels and real butter for the rest of my cooking. For baking I use butter flavored Crisco and have the best results! (I just substitute it for the butter)

Margarine is hydrogenated oil...one should avoid that at all costs! POISON POISON! Seriously, do some searches about how bad margarine(hydrogenated oil) is for you. You are not doing yourself any favors by eating margarine instead of butter! I never buy margarine, only real butter!

Butter for everything. I always keep a tub of the spreadable butter for bread and stuff. But mostly we keep a stick out all the time so there is some that is soft enough to spread. 8 in the family so it won't ever go bad sitting out, we go thru about a stick a day!
Margarine is just gross.
We like to make our own butter sometimes. Now that is really good!

Butter for almost everything. For cooking in a skillet, we use olive oil or canola oil.

I grew up, eons ago, eating margarine and when I married my Norwegian, butter eating husband, for a while we had both in the fridge. But I finally converted and now it's nothing but butter. I buy unsalted butter, Right now at Aldi's $1.50 a pound. I kept trying to convert him and ended up converting myself, at least in part because like xpcandy, I didn't want to eat the hydrogenated oils.

Whatever is on sale. Unless the recipe calls for something special.

Butter. (I love Aldis too!)

BTW most *margarine* is actually *spread*. Very few companies make margarine anymore.

We use butter only. Dh's grandfather worked at a creamery for a really long time. So dh grew up on fresh butter and whole milk. I grew up on margarine, and have tried to slide it past him every so often. He figures it out every time though.. so I just relented and threw out the margarine.

If I use butter, then my cookies are too crispy. I use betty crocker margarine (50 cents a pack of 4), and I add additional flour to the mix, you need to use enough flour to make the dough so it's thick enough to not stick to your fingers if you touch it. What kinds of things are you making?

I go both ways--if we are having fresh bread w/ dinner, then it is definitely butter. There are certain recipes I use that are only good w/ butter-especially the baked goods. Other than that, for instance, boxed mac and cheese, sauteeing onions, etc., it really isn't cost effective to use real butter.

I have both in my refrigerator too.

Use the sticks for baking and Land O Lakes butter for eating.

Butter totally! for cooking.....if I am sauteing---then it is olive oil with an occasional dab of butter to make it even more yummy. And I would only use butter for cookies, they don't taste as good with margarine, or lard (lol)!
Smart Balance for everyday bagels or toast.

Margarine for things like Kraft mac-n-cheese. Butter for baking and for on things such as baked potatoes.

You have to be very careful if you use margarine when you bake. I think you want to stick with margarine that is MORE than 65% vegetable oil for baking so it has less water in it. Many of the cheaper/store brands have less than 65% vegetable oil.
