I remember when my cousin was pregnant. She was iron deficient. Her Dr gave her iron pills (not sure which ones) but told her to take the pill with a glass of orange juice, he said the vitiamin C would help the body absorb it better.

I have had a problem with anemia for about two years now. I take two iron tablets a day. I take the slow release kind It is a generic brand, 325 mg. They are very cheap...I think I only pay around $5 for a bottle of 100. They do seem to help raise my iron levels some, but my levels still aren't back to normal.

I had a bypass 8 years ago and just had blood work taken again and the nurse called and said I have a severe iron deficiency. She said start with one pill and work up to two. She didn't say what kind of iron so I thought I would turn here for help in the buying of it.
So iron has no mg? Any kind will help?

I was once iron deficient and the dr. prescribed Iberat 500. At that time they were a prescription med. but was then OTC but you couldn't find them on the shelf. You had to ask the druggist for them. If they're still available, they definitely did the trick for me. Just ask your druggist about them.

I was severly anemic. Any type of iron should be fine, BUT I had to take the slow release kind too. The regular just hurt my stomach too much. Dont forget about foods too. Oysters are very high in iron and I love the little canned baby ones. I would eat a can a day. .lol!

Hi,

I too am also anemic and take an iron pill 2x a day. Unless you want an extreme case of constipation, take your iron w/ OJ and drink plenty of H2O/. I've taken 2 kinds of iron and I believe FeOsol(sp?) is the best eventhough it's much pricier. Good luck w/ this. You'll find that after a couple of weeks, you'll have much more energy.

Does anyone here crave chewing ice? If you do, it is a sympton of an iron deficiency.

Go to Google and type in....chewing ice addiction

I used to work with a gal that chewed ice all the time and I told her to go get blood work done. She did and it came back that she was severely iron deficient. I know it sounds really weird by check it out on google.

That is very interesting! I used to chew ice a lot, but now don't at all! I have an aunt that chews ice constantly and she's a vegetarian. I'll have to tell her that. Thanks!

I have been anemic for years now and just got my labs back today-----severely anemic. Now he wants me on 3 iron pills a day. I have been on 1 a day for years now, had a hysterectomy last June(they were hoping my heavy periods was the cause) and I am on Prevacid for my stomach. I have an appointment on the 22nd for stomach ultrasound. Now he is worried it could be a bleeding ulcer or gall bladder problems(I have been having HORRIBLE stomach pains and he felt the Prevacid should be working for me). Let me just say one more thing I am a ice crunching ADDICT!!! I have ice all day long. I also crave SALT. I will eat it on limes, oranges and grapefruit and cucumbers. MY mouth is watering for some as I type this. Weird..... Has anybody tried iron shots? My Mom was telling me somebody she used to work with got them.

I was gonna post that the Iron pills they gave me during pregnancy constipated me, course that was so long ago, I just assume the DR did not know to tell me to drink it with OJ and to drink plenty of water.

Waves hands in the air. I chew a 16 lb bag of ice aday and been doing this for 20 +years.I have such a low iron level that when I went to donate blood to the red cross the iron level didn't even register on the meter. When I was pregnant with my now 6 yo I had to move my date for my C-section because my iron level had drop from 5 to a 2 and my doctor said it was way too low to wait till the date we had( 2 weeks later ). I have had iron shots in the past nearly killed me. I had NEVER been so sick !. We have tried iron tabs also makes me very ill and I end up throwing up half the day.The only thing I can do to try and keep a some what iron level is to eat foods high in iron, but I end up feeling ill after it.After suffering all these years from low iron I guess my body has gotten use to it by now.If you need to take a iron pill make sure its Low iron to make sure you will not get ill from it. Nothing is worse than having a upset stomach from iron.
