Polar bear attacks woman at Berlin Zoo

BERLIN, Germany (CNN) -- A polar bear attacked a woman at Berlin Zoo Friday afternoon after she climbed a fence and jumped into its habitat during feeding time, police said Saturday.

One adult polar bit her several times after she plunged into the moat, police said.

Zoo workers tossed rescue rings toward the woman to hoist her out and distract polar bears swimming nearby, said Goerg Gebhard, a Berlin police officer.

At one point the woman fell back into the water and was grabbed by a bear before she was eventually hoisted to safety.

"They saved her life," Gebhard told CNN.

The woman was severely injured and was being treated at a hospital, police said.

It's unclear why the woman entered the bear habitat, but police issued her a citation for trespassing.

Berlin Zoo is home to Knut, the first polar bear to be born there in over 30 years. The bear became a huge talking point in Germany when his mother gave birth to him in December 2006.

First of all...Love the Darwin Awards....even loved the quirky little movie they made about them...

Secondly, what i love most about this story is that the police also cited her and fined her for her actions. Most of the time in this country we punish the animal for the attack.....hopefully this broad gets what she deserves for being stupid and selfish.

If she had gotten what she deserved--the bear would have eaten her for lunch.

Anyone remember the wilderness guy who thought he could live amongst the bears in Alaska.....and they found his remains in some bear poop!? Sweet irony

Wink

sadly at the cost of this womens life she did a truly irresponsible thing. She put her life in danger, she put the animals and the zoo keepers life in danger. All around no good. As a huge animal activist and lover without a doubt I know 100 percent that any animal any form of a animal can be dangerous and you plain just never know. To take the chance and try to be closer to a animal only means one word danger serious danger. There have been so many times I have been in zoos and would love love too get closer but I know for all concerned no way... Better yet I am the owner of 4 shetland sheepdogs. By nature they are truly beautiful and sweet, however the eldest and the biggest of the four Sunshine is very shy. Many times there are always when a stranger will come into my home and try to pet her or approach her, she tends to shy away and go hide in the corner. The others are jumping all over with no problem and very happy to meet and greet. Sunshine we have determined just loves and wants to me with us. So on the occassions sp. when we go walking I always always worn whomever wants to pet her she is not truly friendly so please do not. I sincerely hope this women who decided for whatever reason to enter into the polar bear den learned a hard lesson and will never ever attempt to get that close to any animal you do not know... Peace. Catherine

Well said! The news this morning was saying it was a "bear attack". Uh, excuse me? The lady jumped into their habitat during feeding time. How is this the bears fault for attacking? Stupid media

No kidding! She did everything but rub herself down with fish guts and A-1 sauce.

I do wonder what her motivation was. . .just stupid? It certainly wouldn't be my choice for suicide.

Tim Treadwell

He was lucky he wasnt ate sooner and unfortunatly he put his girlfriend/fiance "on a platter" for the bears as well. all pretty stupid. Lady for crawling into a bear cage and Tim for thinking he can be a "grizzlie adams with his pet bear Ben" and the girlfriend for going to live with a bunch of wild animals with only a little tent for protection

It makes me so mad when the media calls these incidents animal "attacks".

They should call it what it is: Stupid people getting bit.

At least there isn't a call going out for the polar bear to be put down. Few things make me more angry then when people want a zoo animal put down because someone invaded their enclosure and got attacked.

Heard on one of those nightly entertainment news show (the source of all REAL news...LOL ) that she did it on purpose because she had lost her job. I guess she was interviewing for a new job as animal feed.

Well of course, it all makes sense now. Forget working on that resume. . .just jump in a polar bear exhibit at feeding time.

The woman climbed a fence, made her way through prickly trees, climbed down a ladder to the moat, and then swam out to the polar bears at feeding time. She put a lot of effort into getting to the polar bears but I'm not even so sure that (at that moment) suicide was her objective. She had a look of utter joy on her face! Of course, that look disappeared pretty quickly when the bear started feeding on her.

Clearly, she's mentally ill. Anyone should know that doing what she did is suicide and anyone that chooses to be eaten alive by a bear must be out of their mind. It's a horrible way to die.
