Look what happened a block away from me today....

It was like nothing I've ever seen.....

Broward County plane crash: Plane crashes into Oakland Park house in Broward County -- South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com

We could see it from the school I work at, and I could tell it was close to me, but it didn't really hit me until I got home and saw how close it really was.

Ugh! That is one of my biggest fears. We live right under the flight path for McChord Airforce Base. Glad you are ok. . .and it sounds like nobody was in the house at the time. . .that's very good. It could have been worse.

This happened a few blocks from me a few years ago. It hit the house of a low level baseball pitcher and his wife and child were home, but no in the house was killed. I think just the pilot. I don't remember for sure.

Here are some more pics with a blog from the paper on the chronology of the crash. Our PE teacher said it went right over the school with the engine on fire. The school is about 6 blocks from my house. It's still kind of surreal that it even happened.

Not to hijack the thread - but I had a car drive into the supermarket I was shopping at on Saturday while I was inside. Really bizzare, the driver was only in their 30's (no little old lady or gentleman like it often is). There was this huge crash and the sound of people screaming - I actually wondered at first if there had been a bomb. Luckily everyone is going to live, although several people were injured. When I checked out afterwards one of the cashiers still had somebody's blood on her and hadn't noticed until just when I saw her. You don't think this or the airplane can happen where you are - but wow...

That is so scary, Sue. Could you feel it shake the earth?
Kind of off-topic, but it seems kinda crazy to me that an 80-year-old should be out flying an airplane, KWIM?

I was at work, and apparently it went right over our PE field. The PE teacher called over the radio about it and we all went out immediately. He said as it went over the engine was on fire. Scary! Thank goodness most of the kids didn't see it.

There's been a lot of talk about the pilot's age, but apparently this was a mechanical failure.

I don't know about flying airplanes, however it seems to me as long as the oldsters have the renewal money, the state is happy to renew their driver license. This is what scares me, the scale of how many 80 year olds are driving cars vs. how many 80 year olds are flying planes. There are so many more on our roads.

There is a test they can take, both written and driven, with a report on whether they "should" conitnue driving. My boss and his father (age 88) agreed to abide by the outcome of this. I saw the report. It was so middle of the road (pun intended) with what the results were that they wasted their money and father insisted on continuing to drive. No one at the state testing facility will touch this without a physician's input.

My 95 1/2 year old widow friend still drives. I know it means independence, but it also means danger. I try to take her to appointments whenever I can - in my car, with me driving.

op - glad you are ok, that is awful for everyone involved.
