It's started already

My little girl just turned 6 and is in her room with the boombox blasting Taylor Swift's Love Story. She LOVES that song, she likes a lot of the same songs I like too, so I made her a cd, but doesn't 6 seem a little young to have already started, I thought this was all preteen stuff, at least 8 or so! She's so cute too, she plugs in her head phones so we don't hear the music, just her singing, and she's so off key, but she's loving it. We already got it on video.

I guess I'm missing out. My DD is almost 8 and doesn't play music in her room (neither does my son who is almost 10). We listen to music together in the car. I know *I* didn't get into the whole listening to music thing until I was around 14 or so.

My 15 yr old DD likes Taylor Swift. DD started listening to music in the 5th grade. I agree that 6 is rather young to be listening to music so much, especially music that is not geared for a young child. Not meaning anything personal, however, the only reason your DD is starting this so young is because you're allowing it and/or encouraging it.

I think that sounds precious! I remember getting such a kick out of listening to dd at age 7 singing along to Rihanna's Take a Bow. Not a clue what the song was about, she just liked the way it sounded. Now 8, she's a big Taylor Swift fan, too.

It's a matter of personal opinion what's too young, but my oldest are now 21 & 20, and like the rest of my kids, they all listened to music from an early age. It has not negatively impacted their development into fine, productive adults.

I know I had my own record player... well, I don't remember when I got it, but I don't remember not having it.

I mostly listened to Disney long-playing records where Tinkerbell rings her little bell like this... to get you to turn the pages in the read-along book.

But in about 2nd grade I discovered my mom's Greatest Hits of the 60's collection and discovered Hey Mr. Tambourine Man, Red Rubber Ball, Little Green Apples, and King of the Road. Those were sort of 'oldies' when I 'discovered' those records in '76, but I FELT like I was 'one' with Rock 'n Roll! lol

My 13-yo dd still doesn't listen to the radio much... mostly Christian contemporary stuff on CD's, as well as some show tune music (like the Wicked soundtrack)....

My girls are 7 and 9 and each have an ipod. I load what songs they want and Taylor Swift is one of their faves! They'll walk around the house singing away and they have figured out how to get on the same song at the same time so it's double trouble then. LOL
My oldest LOVES singing, I think she got that from my dad. He used to sing to her from the first day she was born (he is an excellent singer) so I'm sure some of that rubbed off on her. She even has a solo part in her next concert, can't wait to get that on tape!

hambirg, my dh got them hooked on AC/DC as well (esp "She's Got the Jack" ) and Bon Jovi, Styx, and lots of others.

My girls are 12 & 15, but have loved music their whole life. DH is into all types of music. They had ipods at an early age and listen to everything. It relaxes our girls. When they were younger and would throw temper tantrums they would get sent to their rooms to listen to music to calm down - especially youngest. My girls listen to everything. It's funny when they're singing and come to a "bad word" - the just skip that word and go right on singing!

My youngest (9) loves music. He's had a portable cd w/ headphones for a long time, then about 2 years ago he got an ipod. He likes all kinds of music--he's partial to Nickelback, early Emniem, Ozzy Osborne, Tim McGraw, George Strait, and Metallica.
He will sing along and just skip over the words that he knows are inappropriate for someone his age.
And I encourage love of music. It helps the little minds grow and develop. It's a very constructive outlet at any age.
