A friend who was over there (3 times) says the goat the Iraqis cook is mighty tasty

I know, that is absolutely no help--it's just everytime I think of Iraqui food, his raving about the goat always comes to mind!

Lamb is a staple. This one looks easy enough. Iraq used to grow more dates than any other region. The site below has a recipe for date cookies.

This one's easy: Foods of Iraq: Enshrined With A Long History : ThingsAsian

Thats the something my DD teacher told her. Hmm I'm NOT cooking any sort of goat ... Maybe a lamb leg or some kind of beef dish, but no goat lol.

Thanks for the link night, I don't think the kids will eat anything thats listed other than the
Khubaz (Pita with Jelly)

Ingredients
  • 1 package of whole wheat pita bread
  • Butter
  • Jelly
Said it usually served with a salad. Wonder if they mean a green salad tho

The
Kebabs

Ingredients
  • 1½ pounds boneless lamb, beef, or chicken cut into medium-sized cubes
  • ⅓ cup soy sauce
  • ⅓ cup cooking oil
  • ¼ teaspoon ground pepper
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1 large green pepper, seeds removed, cut into 12 pieces
  • 1 large red onion, peeled and cut into pieces
  • 12 cherry tomatoes, or three tomatoes, cut into quarters
  • 12 fresh mushrooms
  • Salt
  • ½ teaspoon ginger
Sound pretty yummy also, But now I'm wondering if these would be acceptable since it's pretty much what we eat in America also. I would love to find a dish that the kids would eat ( or even taste )yet pretty much non American way of doing it. Thanks again, please keep the suggestions coming.

Thanks everyone,
I'm going get DD to make Sweet Almond" Briks" and lamb kebabs.
Some of the spices they are calling for can't be found here. We don't have any stores that carry these kinds of spices. Now if it was Spanish or Mexican spices got plenty of those, but none that I've ever heard of being Middle East.
Plus DD is only 12 and the kids doing this are 12 and 13, hate to spend money on something they will not even look at...

We can't even find Whole Ginger Roots and I've searched high and low for rose water, only place I've ever found it was Ebay. So this is as simple and accessible to the called for items as I can find.

I get ginger root at the grocery store all the time. It's usually in with the things like been sprouts, wonton wrappers, and mushrooms.

If you decide to bail out on the kebabs ( I think they would be a lot of work and pricey to make for an entire class) I found this. . .cheap, easy and authentic.

Vegetarian Recipes Around the World - Chickpea Soup (Iraq)

Now see, if the OP had allowed her DD access to the web to research the project and had stumbled on to something inappropriate someone would skewer the OP for not supervising. Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

rest assured if a school project requires my child to use the kitchen---I'm going to be right there with them. Furthermore: I didn't know how old the OP's child was, so parental help seemed natural. And even knowing that the child is 12 doesn't alter my opinion. Parental supervision and assistance is still needed!

I agree with what you said, but the other poster said "research" not "cook". I took it to mean that if mom/dad do the whole project, then it no longer teaches the child anything.

I think the child should be finding the recipe or information to start the project. Also, the child should compile the list, be involved in shopping, know how much it costs, etc all the way through.

I always wonder if there are children in Iraq who have to make American dishes for class and write a report. Wouldn't it be cool if you could find a site where kids and parents from all over the world could come together and each discuss kid friendly ethnic or regional dishes with each other instead of playing a guessing game. I bet there would be some wonderful tried and true recepies to come off of a site like that plus a host of information on the dishes right down to familie stories.

Yeah, there's some things that I kinda turn away from but most stuff doesnt bother me. They make Tarantula pops and stuff up in... think it's NJ. It's about $100 a spider.

gag gag gag..is there any reason why he does this ??.I *Might* and that is a HUGE might eat something with 6 or 8 legs if i was staving to death, but since the body can go about 30 days w/o food it gives me 30 day to get over the gag factor of it LOL.Does he do this just to show what other countries eat ? or is it some kind of challenge ?.

I have a 12 year old and the most assistance I would give him in doing research for his project would be to take him to the library or sit with him while he searched the internet. I would not advise letting a 12 year old cook unsupervised.

I'm with Rebecca on this one. When I read the OP, I thought it was odd that the parent felt that she wasn't sure where to start with this one. Just read a little strange to me.

But those days are behind me now.....from high school forward (and even a little before) they are really on their own to get the work done and should have the background and ability to do so. Otherwise, we have cheated THEM.

Rebeccarr and cjs218, You are your child's best teacher. I would think that sunsetbeach is just trying to point DD in the right direction. With DD having to make food, obviously, mom has to buy the stuff and knowing DD capibilities in the kitchen, I would think it was appropriate to help DD get started, looking for appropriate foods. Her child might think it was fine to make lamb-ke-bobs for the class, and tell the teacher that, and spring that on mom the night before.

Anyway having worked for 2 Middle Eastern bosses, one from Jeruselm and one from Jordan, although not Iraq, they loved anything to do with dates and figs. Good luck to DD on her project.

Sunsetbeach. . .don't worry about the people on here that want to give you crap. I'm a teacher.. .of course you are going to be involved in this project. You are paying for it, for crying out loud! You and I both know that 12 yr olds still need parental guidance. . .thank God! Do it as a team. . and I hope that it all goes well.

Thumbs up

Thanks everyone.
Couldn't sleep think I have the flu or something been really sick .But wanted to come back and post a few things to clear the air.
This is my fault for not posting more information on just what was needed.
DD project has to be on 2 dishes and their meaning, But since the time I posted this the teacher has told them only 1 meal or dessert and not due till May 15th ( was due Friday ) DD wants to make the Sweet Almond" Briks" since she knows the kids will eat this. (She wasn't looking forward to cooking lamb at all .) I never meant for anyone to think I was doing the project that doesn't happen around here. (Your homework not mine ). DD will get my help when it comes to cooking tho, she's never cooked anything more than eggs in the microwave. Doubt she even knows how to turn the oven on.
But any hoot. She's almost done with the research paper all but the flag part. Some sites show a new flag and others show the a different flag, she'll just have to wing it and pick the one she thinks is right. But at any rate. Thanks for all the help, DD said she thinks she picked wrong and if this ever comes around again she's picking Mexico LOL. Hope this clears things up.
