What About our Gardens?

Speaking of the weather, when will we plant? I have seeds and plants. So far I have only been able to plant a perimeter of marigolds because I am afraid of frost.

What about you others that are still having cold weather?

It depends where in the country you live. Around here, the best rule of thumb is like suezz..
I wait til Mother's Day and then I am almost assured the weather will be consistent.

Even though we had gardens growing up I didn't pay attention and this is only my second garden for myself. So I am ignorant on a lot of stuff. I called a local nursery he told me I could plant my radishes, lettuce, spinach, and sugar snap peas. He told me to wait to plant the rest. So as soon as it stops raining I will plant those.

What do you mean by hay and 2 litre bottles? I don't understand. Is this something I need to know and do?

we put a thick layer of hay all over our garden ( usually around 6-8 big round bales cause we have a huge garden) then plant what ever we are going to plant. the hay holds in the water and the sun dont bake the plants. we also plant maters in bales of hay. cut a little hole in the bale and stick the plants in there with the dirt that comes with them . the maters grow like crazy in these bales of hay. we take 2 litter drink bottles, poke a few holes in the top, fill them up with water, stick them in the ground beside what ever plant we want to water and poke a few holes in the bottom and it "slow leaks" till its empty. keeps the roots good and wet. we fill up the bottles usually every other day out of our 55 gal rain barrels.

I'm envious of those of you planting! We've only planted our corn (an acre) and are really crossing our fingers it doesn't get hit by frost. Around here (NE Ohio) we usually don't plant till Memorial Day weekend.

I have all my seeds started and are growing nicely. Now, if the flower seeds I planted would do the same, I'd be one happy gardener!

I have a row of potatos in the ground and in some containers. 2 green bean plants that survived the cat in the ground, some lettuce in my kitchen window (in a milk container) and 6 tomato plants (given to me) that may or may not survive (I think they are too small) also in the ground. Just waiting for more plants and some warm weather.

We can't plant until Memorial Day. Last year my hubby went ahead and planted too early, had a heavy frost and even putting hay on them didn;'t help. Hopefully he will not put anything in that early this year. We do have onions but that is it.
