No videotaping until after the birth???

I went to visit someone at the hospital today, and this message was posted on the door to the OB wing.

I think it is to protect the doctor. I have never heard of this before. Does anyone know why they might be placing this restriction???

I would think it must be to protect the doctors. When I had my children (2 and 4) I was allowed to tape during the birth, there were no restrictions.

I think when I had my two youngest 12 and 13 you couldn't tape during the birth either.

It kind of makes sense, just in general. If I were a doctor I don't think I'd want to be taped while concentrating on a birth.

I can imagine the videographer getting in the way.

Agreed. I think the last thing a doctor and the staff need is some guy running around with a camcorder getting in the way.

I guess if it's really important for someone to tape this, they might want to consider homebirth.

I'm sure it's to protect the dr's. You just KNOW that some nutcase would videotape a dr. doing something in the delivery room that was correct for the situation but nutcase wouldn't like the look of it or whatever and then would try to sue. Dr's and hospitals don't need that kind of nonsense.

What I can't understand is why you'd want to record the actual birth. Just WHEN do you watch that video again? The only use I can see for it is to scare teenage children out of having sex, lol!

OBs have faced increasing malpractice rates in recent years. To the point that many OBs have gotten out of practice delivering babies. The OBs were being held responsible for diagnoses that came up months and sometimes years after the birth. Some of the diagnoses had the potential to be traced back to delivery.
That said, prohibiting videotaping during birth, is probably a protection measure for the OBs.
And I'm w/ targetgirl--how many people actually watch the video of the birth??

The funniest line I have heard lately is that when your kids are driving you crazy, you put the video on, push rewind and send them back where they came from!!

Ouch!

I would not have wanted a video tape of L&D....yuck. Despite all the hubby in the delivery room as the labor coach, etc....I'm just not so sure it's a great idea. Old-fashioned, I know, but I think it takes away from future intimacy to some degree....

I agree. I understand why someone would want this but really the Mom is the only one who will ever watch it and get pleasure from the viewing. Everyone else will be saying "I am NEVER going to do THAT".

LOL.. I have never wanted any reminder of L&D with any of my kids, I'm not a good mom/wife while trying to push out a 9lb plus baby . The shock of some of the things that were said when I did have 3 of the kids via VB would probably make a sailor blush. I can see it now, Gesh mom did you REALLY think of my dad that way LOL. Would you have really of done that to him
ROFLMAO.Nope wouldn't have made a "good" movie night for the kids to see that.

I'm not for sure why the rule has been placed but I'm guessing it has to do with being distracted in the OR or labor room, or it could be the moms to be are laboring like I did and the thought of being told to look into the camera sends them over the top( ) so to keep the murder rate down they ask no taping.

Not sure I would have wanted a video of my girls' births....one VB and one c-section. Not that dh would have taped either one anyways.....first birth the doc tried to get him interested in the placenta and second birth the doc took out my ovaries (after the baby of course) and tried to get dh interested in them. He told the 2nd doc "thanks but no thanks and please put my wifes ovaries back inside where they belong!" Poor guy!!!

Licking the baby ....LOL...that's funny. I don't think many of us would have kids if we had to lick them after birthing them

I can't find the story, but I remember a story of a guy taping the birth of his child. The doctor did something wrong and since the father had eveything on tap, he was able to sue the hospital and won that case. Ever since then, people have not been allowed to tape births. I'm not sure if this is the situation in every state.

Say, you just might be on to something there with making teenage children (both sexes) watch a birth video......I say let's try it. Let's get a government grant/stimulus going on it.

Wink

Personally the only other person I wanted with me was my dh and no one else no way, no how. The only other people I would want if I ever did have anymore children would have been to have one of my dd's plain and simple. With that being said while the birth experience can be sometimes beautiful for some ladies, while others suffer extreme pain, I cannot imagine wanting to view that tape and besides I would only be able to show it to myself and possibly my children. But again there are millions of women who think its 100 percent natural and plainly have their whole family there for the acutal birth never ever ever.On that I am a prude... I also can understand from the hospital's point of view if something could go wrong in the delivery room they would have to worry about lawsuits you never ever know... Peace. Catherine

My youngest is 12 and that was the rule at our hospital too. Heck when my oldest was born DHs weren't even allowed in the OR with a c section!

What strikes me odd with this is that it seems like a hospital doesn't want proof if a doctor does something wrong. That's fishy behavior, like if a doctor does something wrong and hurts a baby, the hospital doesn't want proof so they can potentially cover it up.

It strikes me as likely that anyone taping a birth is more likely to get in the way of the doctor doing his job.
