Spring Band Banquet for Seniors

Our high school has a nice spring banquet, that really is honoring the graduating seniors in band. We were very much looking forward to going, but then received the formal invitation in the mail indicating that it will be at a banquet hall and the cost was $20 a person; even children. So, for my whole family to go, it would be $100. Needless to say, we're not going, but I told my daughter that if she wanted to go with her band friends, she could, as band members, excluding seniors, have to pay too. If my daughter were a graduating senior, we would most definitely all go., but not this year.

I think it's too bad, as many band families will choose not to go because of the cost. In the fall, they have a banquet too, but it is in the high school cafeteria. Everyone brings deli food and there is no cost, and everybody attends.

Any other high schools out there that have something similar?

We do have a nice banquet at our school for all fine arts students. Seniors are honored and some awards are given out for underclassmen. It was $10/ticket, and it wasn't assumed that the whole family would go. It seemed like mostly students went without parents except for the graduating seniors, whose parents attended, which would've made it $30 for the three of them. The fine arts club subsidized the price of the tickets - otherwise they'd have been about $20/each.

For our Band banquet the tickets were $15 dollars each. The tickets had to be paid in advance. The band students who went were reimbursed for the cost of their ticket for the banquet. It is mostly to honor the seniors, but underclassmen get some awards. This is the first time in six years that we skipped the banquet. We have found that the same select few students receive the awards every year.

Our choir has an end of the year awards banquet and its a pitch-in. Last year all that was left to eat when I got to the line was a cookie and a handful of tortilla chips. I can understand why schools are having a meal instead of relying on a pitch-in. After I paid to bring a dish and then have to pay again to feed my family because there wasn't any food left, I think people get a little peeved. I am used to church dinners where every one brings a ton of food and nobody leaves hungry!

I think the cost is high, but I can understand why.

At least she's invited. At our school, JV athletes are pointedly excluded from events put on my the Boosters.

Which is why the Boosters won't be getting my money or support next year. I think that's outrageous.
