how many diapers does a baby go thru in a day

I am trying to get a bunch of diapers purchased for my dil. I first need to have my memory refreshed on how many diapers a baby can go thru in a day. Or in a month. I have gotten a bunch of newborn and size 1 or 2 diapers. But, how many do they go thru in a day/week/month. Any new moms out there that can give me a rough estimate? So far, I have gotten 50 pkgs of huggies and 50 boxes of wipes. How long will the diapers last? My son and dil dont know I got these yet, but when I show them, I want to at least give them an estimate on how long they might last.

thanks
Beth

You can look it up on the internet. For infants I found 8-10 a day to be a pretty good average.

I think I used more like 6 a day. My kids pretty much slept for 4 hours at a time and they got changed whenever they woke up.

I'd be careful about going overboard with the smaller sizes. Most of my kids were out of the size one very quickly, and I had one who could never wear them. I'd stick with sizes 2 or 3. Something to think about. Not all babies can wear all diapers, some of mine would break out with Huggies, others with Pampers. Same thing can happen with wipes.

They are very lucky to have you helping out.

Personally, I'd wait to buy diapers after the baby is born. Let them know ahead of time that you would like to buy them diapers for a gift, that way they can experiment with what will work for their baby and not end up with a bunch they can't use.
Both my boys were to big for newborn ones andwere out of size 1 in a week. Also, mine could use only huggies or Shoprite store brand. Any other type they peed right through them.
My sister's oldest ds could only use pamapers. any other tyoe, he'd break out in a rash.

Heres a tip for diaper rash....leave the baby in a sopping wet diaper. The pee "cures" the rash. This info comes from the pediatrician.

I don't think I would ever give this a try.

Great idea, buying diapers for them. They are so expensive. My babies went through 10-12 a day as newborns. If you can get sizes 3-4, go for it. My kids were in those the longest.

Regarding allergies to the wipes, they would still be useful for parents to use to wipe up their hands (like during eating, then baby cries, quick wipe up, grab screaming baby), or wipe up a spill or counter. Baby wipes are also good for in the car.

Yuck, Yuck and Yuck. I would never do that, I actually don't understand it either, babies sometimes get diaper rash from foods, etc. and also wet diapers so why would that work?

cant imagine someone doing that and the pain the baby has to go through.

I'd get size 2 and above, babies zip through newborn and 1's very fast and alot skip newborns altogether

I wouldn't get any diapers until the baby is born because the baby could be like my son. My son was 2 big for NB diapers and only stayed in size 1 for a few weeks. Also, he was allergic to some and others he peed through. He could only use Huggies.

I don't buy any newborn diapers. The hospital always sends us home with a pack. After they're used up, I go right in to size 1's. I also don't buy a whole lot of size 1 or 2's. My kids were in the 3's for quite awhile.

How about getting diaper service instead? It'll reduce the pollution that her child will have to grow up in.

Like I said, I have ALREADY purchased them.
I had diaper service for my son once, and would never recommend it. The diapers smelled like moth balls. IT was so gross. I used clothe diapers for my first 2 babies. I still have them, and my dil will use them too. Just found a good deal on the diapers, and got them.

I guess I may end up exchanging the sizes. I got the smallest and size 1's only.

That would only work if it were a yeast rash. For any other rash it would make it worse.

Anyway who wants sit in a soaking soppy diaper or hold a baby that is?

Since you've already bought them, I'd wait until the baby's outgrown them and then exchange some for the next size up.

You really just never know how many they'll need. My oldest was in size 2's by about 5 weeks. My youngest wasn't in them for almost 4 months (and he was 3oz heavier than my first when he was born.)

Breastmilk helps diaper rash, and it's not uncomfortable. Baby wipes are also good for getting spitup off things. I honestly don't remember how many diapers my son used when he was tiny.

Mine were around 7lbs when they were born and I don't think we used more than half a pack of newborn size each. No idea on the other sizes. They do grow out of them pretty fast! And I don't think we used the suggested 8-10 a day unless they pooped a lot on a particular day.

And about the suggestion to leave a baby in a wet diaper, I've noticed myself when one of mine had a rash, it would be about cleared up when I changed their wet diaper in the morning.

Wink

Well my baby will be 17 this Sunday on Mothers day so its been a long time. Having said that because of breastfeeding they seemed to go thru more diapers then the normal. Also they do grow fast and I would recommend not buying too too many little tiny ones. As far as rashed honestly perhaps just me I changed them so much, they never had a chance to get one. But I was always told that if it did happen to just let them air out their little buttoms it was the best. And I remember when my kids were small that many parents did do this. Peace and best wishes.. Catherine

My last 4 children were avg to small for birth weight, Biggest being 7lbs 14 oz smallest being 6 lbs 1 oz. for the biggest she was in size 1's by 1 month. But for my smallest one she couldn't wear anything but preemie diapers and even those were big on her. She was only 17 inches long, by 4 days old she had lost down to 5 lbs 6 oz and by 5 days old she was 5 lbs 1 oz. she wouldn't latch or suck a bottle why she lost all her weight so fast. Any hoot, She stayed in a preemie for 3 months and a size 1 till she was 5 months old, she stayed in a size 2- 3 till she was nearly 2 years old, after that She was potty trained by a few months after her 2nd birthday.
What a sweet thing you are doing, Wish I had a family member to help us like that.
