What are you doing for summer vacation this year?

How has the economy impacted your summer vacation plans? Are you staying close to home or even just your home state?
We have decided to do our usual low key vacation to Smith Mountain Lake. I know a bunch of families that plan to just explore their own cities and not travel at all. Either way, I can't wait for summer to get here

we never do anything just cause it's summer. Most times it's too hot or too expensive anyway for six people. I may take the kids and go home to visit but doubt it.

We usually go to see in-laws a few hours away and not travel much more than that. This year, we are going on a 14 day road-trip. We are traveling within our state (WA.) and Idaho and staying at campgrounds. I am not sure who is more excited, me or the kids.

I'm not sure yet. We aren't planning a big vacation, not because of the economy, but because we went on a Caribbean cruise for spring break. DH travels to Minneapolis a lot and the girls and I have never been, so we may go for a long weekend with him. We've also thought about spending a few days in a condo at the Lake of the Ozarks (about 3 1/2 hours away) or going to my sisters in Austin. Not sure...but nothing elaborate this summer.

Going to Destin, FL with DD, my friend and her DD for a week. She has a timeshare and needs to use the time...I'm a very good friend and volunteered my little family! It's the least I could do! And since she's covering the condo, I'm covering breakfasts and lunches. Probably going to just pick up simple things. And we'll go out or order pizza for dinner.

And my best friend is having a baby shower at the end of July, so I'm going to fly out to Colorado for a long weekend.

My oldest DD wants to go camping again this year. We went last year but she worked the 4 days they ( her family ) stayed. DH worked the 6 days we stayed. He only works 3 miles from the camp grounds. I had plans to buy a RV this year, but good old field lines at the tune of $ 2,000 + took care of that plan . I'm not really in the mood to camp to be honest, I took my cub scouts camping this year 4 times and I'm working now to get us a spot when we join back up in Aug for a 3 day camping trip, So I'm not for sure if I want to spend another 6 days in a tent in June.

I have no plans with anyone else to go on vacation. We'll probably just stick it out at the house and go to the zoo and Maybe ( BIG Maybe ) the water park. But since it cost 35.50 a person for tickets thats a lot for a family of 6 to pay.
I refuse to buy the season pass only because they are open from the week schools out till late June. The pass is 375.00 for a family of 4 and extra 125.00 each after that. So NOT worth the cost of the pass for us.

Have fun on your vacation everyone.

Same as every year, two weeks in the Adirondack Mountains with family and friends. I'm really looking forward to it.

If we can get a decent rate, we may also fly out to Chicago for a few days to see DH's family.

My uncle has offered us his place on Captiva Island, but I can't get excited about Florida in the summer. I think I'm going to be outvoted, though!

I am taking my dh to Charlottesville, VA for a five day mini vacation for our 27th Anniversary the first week in June. Our oldest daughter is going to come and stay with our youngest daughter while we are away. We will probably go up to camp for a few days over the fourth of July (Schodic Lake), and we have a Keith Urban concert that six of us will be attending in Boston in July. Other than that, we will probably stick close to home and do some day trips to the local spots (Bar Harbor, Belfast, Camden and Mooshead Lake).

I love Cville! I went to school there. There are so many amazing sights -- Monticello, The University, Ash Lawn. And, if you're so inclined, there are dozens of wineries very nearby. The one right by Monticello, Jefferson Vineyards, is very nice indeed!

Have a wonderful, wonderful time.

We won't be taking a big vacation this summer but it's not because of the economy. We have the opposite problem (thank God) DH is so busy at work that he won't be able to take more than a day off here or there. If we do take a big trip, it will be to Indiana to visit my mom. We always take fun side trips to Chicago from there so hopefully we'll get to but as of right now, no plans.

We're fortunate to live in a locations where we can easily get to NYC and Philly and lots of other great places so we'll take day day trips, I'm sure.

No change for us due to economy. We are planning a week-long trip to Washington. We will visit my niece in Bremerton for a few days, spend a few days in Seattle, and go crabbing and salmon fishing. We are pumped! Very excited... We would like to do more, but DH started a new job recently and he doesn't have a lot of vacation time. Bummer.... we may try to take a long weekend trip, too, but we'll have to see...

vacation

Dh took off a nice chunk of time at the end of june through the fourth of july weekend. We have already made reservations to stay in Boothbay Harbor for a couple of nights. We're going to go sailing one day and otherwise just explore and relax. I really want to go to the Botanical Gardens too.

Besides that we're just going to take things as they come. We may go down east for a nice long weekend- and stay at our family camp- free is always good.

Hi tammy. have you been to moosehead before? if so what does your family typically do?

I went to highschool in greenville, used to work at indian hill motel, and on the Katahdin- so if you head that way I may be able to give you some suggestions.
oh if you're into camping i highly recommend plum creek.

We have been to Mooshead many times. We usually just make a day trip out of it and drive up and spend the day taking in the beauty of the area. Years ago we had friends from the DC area that came for a visit, and we took them up to the Road Kill Cafe. They loved it! At the time we were renting a camp for a week at Sebec Lake and decided one rainy day to go exploring and ended up at Moosehead Lake. Thats one thing about Maine...there are plenty of beautiful places to take a day trip and feel like its a mini vacation.....

We are going to California for the National Square Dance Convention in Long Beach California in June. We are driving our motorhome and taking our 16 year old grandson (if his final report card is good!) We will be going thru the last of the 4 states that we have yet to visit, Utah, Idaho, Montana, and No. Dakota. Actually we will still have Hawaii on our list but DH does not want to go there. I do and I bet I will win! We will vist relatives in California and in Oregon we will visit an old high school friend of DH's who he recently found after all these years! He has invited us to go salmon fishing! This will be a 6 week vacation unless grandson cannot go, and then it will be longer! His parents don't want him to be gone even 6 weeks, but there is no way we can do it all in under 6 weeks.
I am very excited about this trip.
(No, we can't afford it but we are doing it anyway!)

We're going on a cruise this summer too. We are going out of Baltimore on the Carnival Pride. It cut the cost down tremendously by not having to fly. A little more expensive than a land vacation, but the kids love cruises.

Where are you going?

Aren't you from Maryland? The reason I asked is that we got a great rate to Milwaukee out of Baltimore on AirTran yesterday. It is about an hour and half from Chicago. We looked at Southwest to Midway and they were good too. We have family in Milwaukee and Chicago. So we usually go into Milwaukee and then drive to Chicago. We are going in June to our granddaughter's first birthday in Chicago.

We are going on a two week trip starting in Vegas, going to Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, Lake Powell, Grand Canyon, Flagstaff and back to Vegas in a motorhome. I did this trip 22 years ago (gulp) and now I can't wait to show my children some of the most amazing sites this country has to offer. I'm excited!!!

Maybe the same itinerary, not the same cruise. We go on June 6th. We picked an early vacation this year.

Do you know about cruisecritic.com? They have boards there that give you all kinds of information about cruises......ports of call, what to pack, money saving tips. etc. They have a roll call where you can talk to other people on your cruise as well.

Have fun!

She thinks their useing her money on things they want but I told her that wouldnt stop them cause they have access to her account information to pay bills and things for her. she said she missplaced her check book the other day, and then it sudenly appeared but who knows if they are or not she's very forgetful anymore :-(

I am a teacher so I have to wait until school is finished to cruise. I have been on cruisecritic for a little more than 2 years. I have meet some great people, have had the answer to many cruising questions and save a lot of money using that site.

We love the dells! If we go anywhere, that is where we will go. We stay at the little strip motel across from Familyland. Clean and cheap, with refrigerators and microwaves in the rooms. Last year, Mount Olympus was running a BOGO on wristbands for $20!!! We paid $10 per day for the whole waterpark/go cart/roller coaster fun!!!

Me and the husband are driving to Memphis, we live in Southern IL(about 20 minutes from STL MO), to see Eddie Vedder next month. I can't wait! My husband is not quite as excited as me. We will do a bit of sightseeing there too.

Then in August me and my oldest daughter, she will be 21 next month, are flying out to Chicago to see Pearl Jam. Again I am pretty excited, her not as much, but she does like to go! Depending on when we fly there and back we will also do some sightseeing there.

We are going to the same beach we went to last summer and staying at the same condo complex. The best part is that we are paying a good amount less than we paid last year for a similar condo (same floor plan, but not the same unit last year).

For us, the beach is a nice, affordable vacation. The condo we rent has a full kitchen so we have breakfast and either lunch of dinner there and then only go out for one meal a day. Sometimes we order pizza in and eat the leftovers for lunch the next day. We don't spend a lot on entertainment since the beach & pool are right there.

No, I'm in central Virginia. But for the right fare, I'd drive to Baltimore -- it's only about 2.5 hours, depending on what time of day we go through DC. Thanks for the tip!

We plan on doing day trips. The pass I have to WDW is in blackout during the summer but even if I could go, I wouldn't. Too hot and too many people.

High on my list of places to visit is MOSI.

Welcome to MOSI - Museum Of Science and Industry - Tampa, Florida

For summer in Florida, any place indoors is good.

We're going with the kids to NY to camp for 5 days -- while there meeting my fiance's grandmother and then in to VT to see his brother and his family.

We are also going on a long weekend without the kids to Philadelphia. Going to see Clapton in concert and tour around downtown Philly. From there, we are picking up the kids and going to DC for a few days while he is at a Disability Law Conference.

We have a permanent camping site at a lake, so we'll be there a lot. Dh and I have been talking about taking a small trip, just he and I. Well, yesterday we made a decision. He booked the timeshare, I booked the flight.....to LAS VEGAS!!!!!!!!!!! He swore he would never go to Vegas, but he's going and is looking forward to it!! (ok, only cuz he saw there is a gun place where he can shoot different types of guns... but hey...as long as he's willing to go I'm all for it!) Couldn't pass up the great deal we got...with cashing in our points thru our timeshare, we paid a total of $102.66 for 2 adults to fly non stop to Vegas and back. Come on July!!!! LOL
