Garage Sale question. . .

I'm having one this weekend. I'm sooo not prepared, but figured I would just put out what I have now and have another one next month. But, my question is this. . .I have several kids Nick and Nora bathrobes from Target after Christmas clearance, still NWTs. They were originally $19.99. What would you price them? I also have several of the 3pks of underwear from Target (NWT of course. ) originally $8.99. What do you think about pricing those? TIA

Generally speaking brand new goes for 1/3 to 1/2 the marked price depending on the item the value and how wanted it is.

I usually price NWT items 1/2 off or 75% off, depending on the item

Thanks! That's pretty much what I was thinking. I would love to get $10 for the bathrobes, but was thinking more like $7. . .I know I could get $5, but was hoping for a bit more. Maybe I'll mark them $10 and see how that goes. The undies I was thinking $3. . .$1/pair I thought sounded ok for brand new. We'll see how that goes too.

ETA-Have any of you ever sold off some of your stockpile and how did that go? I've done shampoo, toothpaste and deodorant before, but I have tons of peanut butter and stuff that I was thinking of doing this time.

Wink

Hambirg start out with a price you feel is comfortable or reasonable and then if the buyer decides the price if not fair, be open and simply say make me a offer. Again if you feel the offer is not fair try to meet somewhere in the middle. Good luck I simply love love garage sales... Have fun and make some extra cash... Peace . Hope you have good weather... Maybe it's because I'm a bargain shopper, but I think $7 is enough for the robes. With that being said, I'd start with $10 and reduce it if needed. $3 for the undies sounds good. I have never sold food at a yard sale, but it's worth a try. I do sell a lot of cleaning supplies, and cat and dog food/treats. People snatch it right up, and I have to go scrounging for more in the closet.

I have never sold food at a sale either other than I cook hot dogs and sell soda and water (and that usually goes well). I buy the cokes for $2.50 for a 6 pack of bottles at then sell them for $1 each so I make $3.50 for every 6 I sell. I also do soda and a hot dog for $1.75. I have one family that comes by every year, each of them gets a dog and soda (6-10 of them) and then they "shop" and buy about $100 in stuff

Interesting...I never would have thought of doing something like that. I could get my girls to help out too....for a share of the profit of course.

I'm going to try this at our area wide yard sale next month.

My kids usually sell coffee, canned soda and bottles of water. Depending on how much I want to spend ahead of time, we might have them sell prepackaged muffins.

Thanks for this. . .last week I managed to get 16 packs of the bun length Ballparks for 29cnts for 2 packs at Albertson's (BOGO and double q's) and Target has the Pepsi deal this week that I just picked up 20 6-packs of the 24 oz. So now all I need are buns! LOL!

How did you actually do the hot dogs? I don't want to have to man a bb-q, I was thinking of cooking some and then putting in the large crockpot. Idk???

I man a hot dog sale at a craft show every fall. We pre-cook, then keep the dogs warm in water in a crockpot. For the lunch rush, we put a bunch in buns, wrap in foil, and keep in a chafing dish, but that's for ones that will sell quickly. I think for your purposes, doing a few in a crockpot would work great. If you keep them too long (hours at a time), they do start to get a greenish cast, though!

I do mine on the grill. There are always 2-3 of us doing the yard sale (family joins us) and during lunch, I man the grill. Nothing better than a fresh grilled hot dog. I don't like boiled hot dogs or hot dogs that are sitting in water. I know it's weird but I can taste the difference. I cook a bunch and then keep them on the top rack of the grill, turn it off and keep the lid down. When someone wants one, we fire up the grill and grill the bun if they want it. It also helps reestablish the heat to keep the dogs warm. It keeps them warm for awhile and I haven't run into having extras. We eat the extras for our lunch

Ok. ..thanks you guys. I'll see about the grill. . .I like them grilled better too, but not excited about having to man the grill since it will probably be just me and the kids. I was thinking of cooking like a package or two at a time and keeping them in the crockpot. . .I think that will work better for me. . . .I'm still undecided though. . .lol!

We used to have big family yard sales every couple of years and we usually sold food of some sort on the side. Usually things that required little or no prep or cleanup-bottled pop and water, prepackaged snacks, hot dogs, etc.

I confess that I can be suckered into buying drinks and goodies from little kids, no problem, as long as it isn't stuff like lemonade or kool-aid. But a nice cold bottle of Coke while I'm yard saleing? I'm good for at least a buck for that and maybe more if the goodies are appealing even if I find nothing to buy at the yard sale.

I wonder what the ramifications are of selling cooked/prepared food without a permit and food handler certificate if the county/city got involved. Just "food" for thought !

I wondered about that too. If it's for a church, they'd be covered under their inspecton (I think). As an individual, I would imagine you could be fined if someone turned you in. I think I'd stick to prepacked snacks and drinks.

I have no idea. I've been doing it for over 14 years. Last year, I even had cops come by and buy dogs and drinks as well as a dryer my mom had for sale (they had just gotten off their shift...not on duty). A member of city council has his grand daughter sell brownies at his sales. I've never had anyone say anything here about not being able to sell things like that. I see lots of homemade goodies at sales I go to as well. I guess if you are worried you can contact the city?

Ditto what Sexysmurf said. If there are rules against it here, I've never seen them enforced. So. . eh. . not too concerned about that. We had beautiful weather yesterday, so it was a great day for the sale. I made $180 and I really don't have that much stuff out this time around. So. . woooohooo! My hot seller yesterday. . . toothpaste! I sold 30+ tubes for $1 each. And I sold all but 2 of the bathrobes so far. They sold for $7 or 2 for $10. I'm doing it again today and hoping for about $80 this time. It seems like on day 2 I usually make about half of day 1.

ETA-I did sell hot dogs and pop. I used the crockpot method and sold about 3 pkgs worth. I also sold A LOT of pop. . .thank you hot weather!

I don't eat hotdogs but when we hit the sales early in the morning, I would love to find donuts and juice at a sale. Sometimes I do, but mostly not.

Around here there are restrictions on selling food at a garage sale, but someone has to complain for it to be enforced. In my old neighborhood, a gal had an annual Christmas craft sale that a bunch of women in the area participated in. It got too big and someone finally complained because of the amount of cars. A friend of mine sold homemade apple pies and when the police came and shut them down, she was stuck with about 20 apple pies.

Well where I am people dont care if its $300 nwt its a garage sale they want it for a buck if not less & I am not even joking!!! I do put my foot down though I may have something marked $3 nwt & they want me to come down I just say no now so that item sits I have better luck with that on ebay. As far as selling hotdogs here they would be right on you guess it depends on where you live pop is ok but cooking it & selling it in your yard they would come take you away
