Another teenage medical/govt intervening issue

A mom has run away with her 14 year old 555 pound son to avoid him being taken away. Good grief!

Unhappy

Omg this is so sad again once again, why in the world would any parent not want to help their child in any way shape or form. With an obese child the medical risks are so scary, high blood pressure, diabeties, kidney failure, serious heart problems, why why would you not want help. Again like the other post with the child who has the tumor. I know there are certain religions who do not believe in certain or any medical interventions on any level to the point that they totally believe someone of a higher faith will cure their sick child. Again I have stated my stance on the Catholic religion, I am catholic but I do not agree with it all. However I guess I can not truly speak for people who choose these religions to follow and then put their childrens life at risk. Again because I have no personal knowledge of these religions, i would assume to them, they truly feel they are doing the best for their children. However I personally could never imagine withholding any formof medical help for one of my children. Personally i have spoken before having a sick child My Tommy, who was born with 4 serious heart defects one was corrected surgically when he was 3 weeks old. Then another at 2 years old then another at 4 years old and currently he lives with aortic stenois to which he is closely monitiored sp..by his pediatric cardio doctor every 6-9 months. He also has several stomach problems, Ibs, cealic disease and is lactose intolorent and is seem reguarly by his gastro dr and his nutrionist. I would never ever ever withhold any medical treatment,. Without those heart operations and blood transfusions Tommy would not be here today and losing a child is something none of us here should ever ever experience god forbid.. I pray that these parents seek help soon before its too late... peace. Catherine

I must have missed the association of this story to religion, Catholic or otherwise. Can someone please enlighten me? Or is this just a bringing together of various random and fleeting thoughts?

As for the topic, are there diseases or conditions that would cause a 14YO to weight 555 lbs? How does that happen? Someone mentioned Prader-Willi Syndrome...which I've never heard of....

Yeah, it hasn't been mentioned whether he had medical problems that caused some of that however I would presume if he DID have other med problems (unrelated to being obese and overeating, I mean) that his mom wasn't getting treatment for them..

And, I predict these two are found within a day or less. How can a 500+ lb person hide...they can't run away, they probably can't walk, they are gonna stick out in a crowd...

Wink

cjs216 religion was mentioned for 2 reasons one because of the thread started by Dannic about that people should not have children, religion was mentioned in that thread. Reason number 2 was because of me because there have been posts or threads in the past where there was talk of withholding medical attention due to certain religious beliefs againist medical intervention, sorry thought you would have realized that. Especially the one about John Travolta's son Jett. Peace. CAtherine

Prader-Willi syndrome is not as uncommon as people think - apparently a lot of kids with it get diagnosed with Downs syndrome instead - or used to. The BBC had a very interesting documentary on it some years back. Among other issues it causes - people with it literally NEVER ever feel full. Parents often have to lock the fridge at night because the kids - despite their weight honestly and truely feel like they've had nothing to eat regardless of what they had for dinner etc. And left to their own devices - will eat anything they can get ahold of. Imagine never feeling full or satisfied - its no wonder they have weight issues even as adults. Their bodies and minds are telling them constantly that they're hungry.

I've seen this on Dr. Phil before. It's a strange illness.
