I took Zoloft for about 4 years when my doctor thought it wasn't working as good as it should for me. She then prescribed Prozac. I had a very very bad time with it. I had what was described as "racing thoughts". My mind wouldn't shut off. I felt like I was going crazy. Voices, songs, ideas, you name it - it was racing through my mind. I don't ever want to experience that again.

Perhaps you'll have better luck with it.

Yikes, I get that a lot now, and I don't take any medications. It is horrible!

When I was a court reporter, I recall a few depositions and court cases involving Prozac. All bad. Seems like most people experience a downer effect, suicidal, voices, etc. There was one case I had where a man was doing well with another medicication and the doctor changed and put him on Prozac. He then attempted to kill his wife and did kill himself.

I wonder why it's still on the market.

I took Prozac for 6 weeks once for my anxiety/panic attacks and it didn't do anything for me-neither good or bad. Paxil worked but the side effects and the withdrawal are horrible. Don't go on that one!!!! Zoloft is my wonder drug. It works like a charm for me with no side effects. My sister takes it too and it works great for her.

I guess I shouldn't complain about a few voices then. LOL

I'm currently on Lexapro and that's working great for me.

Unfortunately most antidepressants can cause these type of extreme reactions. You hear more about Prozac because it's been around longer than most and more widely used. (just recently drugs like Lexapro and Effexor are being more commonly used)

I have very little experience with antidepressants. I was on Zoloft for about 3 months around 11 years ago. It made me feel like a zombie, completely emotionless.

From what I've seen (and these are only my unprofessional observations) Zoloft seems to work better for people who primarily have anxiety along with some depression, not as well for people only suffering from depression.

Prozac seems to work the other way around. Those who suffer from anxiety seem to have more adverse reactions to Prozac.

Like I said I have no basis for those opinions other than my own limited observations.

Everyone reacts different to different antidepressants, it can sometimes take awhile to find the right one. Make sure you keep in close contact with your doctor. Let them know of all side effects you experience, make sure they listen and take you serious. If not, see someone else.

Oh, I just wanted to add, I was on Welbutrin for about 2 months for quitting smoking. I don't know if it was nicotine withdraw or the meds, but I was a complete basket case. Anxious, crying, it was a mess.

My mother had MS and she was on Prozac for many years. It did indeed seem to help her depression. But with that being said, she was also on many other meds, so it is really hard to pinpoint how much was the prozac, and how much could have been the other meds.

I have been on Serafem, which is a "pretty Prozac" prescribed by doctors for women with PMDD, for three years. My husband thinks it's the most wonderful medicine in the world! :-) And honestly, I can tell a big difference; I should have been on it years ago. I have not killed anyone or gone on a murderous rampage.

I have been on prozac off and on for 20 years. No problems for me. Guess I am depressed and lucky!

I just wanted to add, be prepared for it to kill your sex-drive. Doesn't happen to everyone, but definitely a very common side effect.

Paxil has those kinds of side effects too. Although not so much in the drive but the "end" result part! lol lol lol

Yeah almost all of them do unfortunately. A few don't, I know Welbutrin claims not to and from my experience that was true, in fact it increased it. Too bad the other side effects were just too much for me to handle

I was on prozac for about a year in 1997. It helped my depression but very bad side effects including weight gain (30 lbs) and no sex drive. Now I take effexor ER and it helps with no side effects.
