Pledge of Allegiance in School??

Are there schools that don't say the Pledge of Allegiance in school, or sing the National Anthem??

I don't know....but when our oldest started Kindergarten in Texas, he was required to pledge allegiance to the Texas flag. That pissed me off. But then, I just considered the source (The State of Texas) and was happy when we moved!

I honestly don't know if my children say The Pledge daily in class. However, since our school district still allows traditional Christmas programs (with actual religious inspired Christmas Carols!!) I don't think the school would say no to the Pledge of Allegiance.

I do know that they are taught the National Anthem in choir.

I just asked my 6th grader and she said that they do not say it. She said there is not even a flag in the classroom. Last summer they re-did all the classrooms and maybe they didn't put the flags back in. She said up until this year (she has always been at the same school) they said it everyday. I do know whenever there is a student of the month assembly everyone turns to the flag and says it.

I asked dd and she said they say the pledge daily (and have a flag in every classroom). The national anthem is only done on Fridays for some reason.

Our kids say the pledge every day. There is a flag in every classroom but they do not use the National Anthem at all.

We stopped with the pledge of allegiance when I was in grade school back in the 60s. We never did the National Anthem.

I know my DD did the pledge every morning in kindergarten but I have never heard it done after that (I sometimes work in the classroom). I have never heard them do the national anthem. I know when *I* was in school in the 70's-80's, we did the pledge every morning in elementary. Stopped in middle school. It doesn't bother me that they don't do it. The pledge is something I always have to explain to the kids since we don't believe "one nation, under God". I just told them to be silent during that part to respect those who wish to say it. I can see that it can be very uncomfortable for people to say it if they do not believe in God. Since there should be a separation of church and state (and glad there is), it seems a good idea that the pledge is no longer said in school (at least past kindergarten). I know my friends (who are Jewish) complained at their school about religious songs and/or teachings and the next year they were taken out of their school (the religious inferences, not the kids)

Our local grade, middle and High School all do the pledge daily, and all classrooms have a flag.

Our school is grades 3-6 and we say the Pledge daily. We don't sing the National Anthem, though.

My kids say the Pledge, but not the National Anthem,

I went to the same school district for about 2 years (20 yrs ago) and we didn't sing either one, I'm not sure when they changed it.

Before that I went to school in NJ and we sang both, same thing in Germany (on base)

I used to say the pledge every day followed by the Lord's prayer!

My kids said the pledge every morning in elementary. In middle & high school they only say it at assemblies.

My daughter's school (k-12 Christian school) says the pledges every morning. That includes the Pledge to the Christian Flag and also the Pledge to the Bible.

I caught a blurb on the news that Marion County schools in FL are discussing allowing students (at their discretion) to sit quietly during the pledge. You can stand quietly although they should be reciting it.

It took various groups of veterans to represent what the pledge stands for, patriotism, etc. for the school board to come to this decision: students will be allowed to sit if they have a note from their parents.

Here's a first for me on a message board: ? W T F ? We let students dictate what they will and won't do? This was even worthy of a school board's time beyond a few minutes of discussion? The school board is conceding? Loser parents will actually write a note for their loser kids to sit? I have said before, the dumbing down of America has happened already. You just do not mess with patriotism. You just do not mess with the flag.

Unhappy

I would be extremely sad if students were allowed to remain silent during the pledge of allegiance, its takes less then 2 minutes to recite and get up and put your hand over your heart. Like I said here in our school district it is said every morning and the afternoon for the afternoon kindergarten. Each child is expected to stand up and pledge the allegiance. In fact here in our class we have 2 different plegde leaders to go up to flag to lead the class . I personally love saying it every day as I am so proud to be American. Peace. Catherine

I totally agree with you. If someone has a problem with saying our pledge to the United States, they need to take a long look at themselves.

I'm pretty sure Jehovah Witnesses don't say the pledge, all the ones I went to school with never did. They were the only one's that didn't as far I can remember. I don't know if they were losers or not.

Yes, unless something has changed JW's do not pledge allegiance, nor will they agree to place their hand on the Bible and swear to tell the truth in court (they will promise to tell the trutch, it's just the swear on the Bible that's at issue...)

In 1943 the Supreme Court ruled that "compulsory unification of opinion" (with respect to the pledge) violated the First Amendment. Our veterans have fought and lost their lives for us to have freedom. To make the pledge mandatory is more unpatriotic than allowing students to quietly refrain from reciting it.

Besides, I bet that fewer than 50% of the kids who recite the pledge even know what it means. Lots of kids think the line "and to the republic for which it stands" is "and to the republic, four witches stand."

Maybe it's time they were taught what it means.

I've never heard of any kid who thought it said 'four witches stand'!! That's awful.
