Would Some of you Green Thumbers help me Please?

My husband gave me a bear planter for one of my Christmas presents, one of those resin ones. The bear is holding a tree stump, that's the planter part. I need to find something that will grow not fast or big or too bushy and not need to be replanted for a long time. Other than a cactus any suggestions? It is about nine inches tall and the hole is five inches.

TIA

Petunias are nice.....or impatiens. Both will fill up a planter nicely.

how wide across the top is the planter? Would it be desktop size or set on your patio size? That would determine what I would put in there.

How about one of those good luck bambook plants? some ivy? I'll better be able to help you when you let us know the size of the planter. It sounds really cute, tho.

Ok, then I would stick with the luck bamboo plant. Here is a link to a picture, and the pot it is in is small.

Maybe a rosemary plant? Do you cook with fresh herbs? You could even pop a couple of herbs in there, and snip away as needed. My favorite herb is basil!! Thyme would go nice with the rosemary, or Italian parsley.

Sounds like an indoor planter - is it?
What about an african violet or an aloe plant?

I'll agree with cj on this. If it's only 9 inches high and 5 inches of planting width, it doesn't sound like an outdoor planter. Where are you planning on putting it? I don't think I'd do petunias or impatiens for an indoor plant, although I'm sure you could. An African violet sounds perfect, although I've never had much luck in growing those. Maybe one of those miniature rose plants???

I bought some of those self-watering planters for my African violets and they are so happy now. I'm also experimenting with some basil in one of them too, since I'm not real good at remembering to water things. I have some succulents that I've have for perhaps 30 years, but things that need water don't last long with me unless they fit in one of those special planters.

Coleus might be nice in your planter if you are better at remembering to water than I am. Lots of pretty leaf colors to chose from.

I have a ton of houseplants. I haven't counted them, but I bet I have at least 100. Here's my 2 cents:

If there's no hole in the bottom of the planter, you have to be very careful. It's easy to over water a plant if there are not drainage holes. When the roots get waterlogged, it can look like the plant is wilting and needs more water. So, you water it more and the roots rot more and before you know it, the plant is dead.
