Shooting at the Holocaust Museum

I live in Maryland near DC. Someone walked into the Holocaust Museum and started shooting. He killed a security guard but noone else was hurt.

What the hell is WRONG with these people? Dr. Tiller, the young soldiers, now this innocent guard -- I hope we're not seeing the beginning of a wave of violence this summer.

It's all over the news, too. I saw it on ABC.

It's scary to think that we have so many fanatics in this country.

CRAZY! I know this is trivial in comparison to what has happened but I feel sorry for our school's 8th grade class. They are on their way to DC for their class trip tomorrow. The Holocaust Museum is always the top priority for them since they spend an entire unit studying the Holocaust. I guess this will be a terrible lesson for them -- the hatred still lives and thrives. So terribly sad.

Agreed. And there's no shortage of people spouting hatred in the media to whip these people into a further frenzy. It's terrifying.

Exactly. I think people would be surprised to know just how many walking "time bombs" are out there. Scary!

Unhappy

This is so very sad and sad to say sometimes we live in a crazy world with sick people who honestly have nothing but hatred in their souls to do something like this. Peace. Catherine

I am also a teacher. After 911, it was several years before I took a class to the Mall area. They finally got to the point that people were feeling comfortable in the Mall area and now this situation.

I'm surprised that this guy was even allowed near Washington with his record. This was a horrible thing to happen. That guy was so full of hate. For him to take his hate out on that innocent guard... Those guards definitely are heroes. Had they not intervened, who knows how many people would have been killed. My prayers are with the family of the guard who was murdered.

The killer should have been imprisoned long ago.

He was, for 6 years. He threatened someone, sorry forget his name, if he didn't lower interest rates he would shoot him.

I saw that! It's just disgusting. Where's the outrage on the left? And what about Letterman making that nasty joke about Palins 14 yr old daughter getting knocked up by Arod? That's just plain nasty-you don't do that to the children of politicians.

You should start a thread about Letterman. He is a sleazeball.

I can't stand him. I haven't watched him for years. I think he does have a mean bone in his body!! In the name of "humor" of course so he gets aways with it.

I agree. I can't believe he wasn't being more closely watched.

I did hear on the news tonight (Fox, I think) that people like him are rarely on the radar of the authorities because they are such law-abiders.They are obviously not 'good people', but they are actually hyper-focused on the law and will get as close to the line as they possibly can... but rarely cross it, specifically because they freak out at the idea of government intervention in their lives. The person being interviewed said that in a weird way, their extremist views actually result in them *not* crossing the line.

So... they don't get watched as closely as perhaps they should be.

I think someone - idiotically - in another thread indicated that this idiot's views more closely resemble those on this board who are more of the conservative persuasion than the liberal one. How stupid must one be to make that statement? The guy hated Jews. Exactly which side of the aisle wants to protect Israel and which is far more likely to be pro-Palestinian?

But I digress...

To assume that murderer has much in common with either mainstream party is to live in la-la land. I have no more in common with him than I did the abortionist Tiller.

Gee, isn't it nice that Von Brunn was allowed to have a gun? He did 6 and a half years for walking into the Federal Reserve armed. Interest rates were too high, you see.

He was a frequent poster at FreeRepublic and idolized at Stormfront. And, Rush tries to label him a leftist. (?) Here's the note that he left on his car ""You want my weapons -- this is how you'll get them. The Holocaust is a lie. Obama was created by Jews. Obama does what his Jew owners tell him to do. Jews captured America's money. Jews control the mass media." Excerpt of Charges Filed Against von Brunn - 6/11/09 | TPM Document Collection

Are these the people who "surround us" as Glenn Beck so eloquently put it? Could saying things like, "What they're missing is: The pot in America is boiling. And this is just yet another warning to all Americans of things to come. " be what's inflaming the right wing?

I didn't hear Letterman, but I'll take your word that his joke was inappropriate. But, to say "you just don't do that to the children of politicians," is odd. I remember a lot of nasty comments about Clinton's daughter, and she is a bright, upright citizen.

Well, where does it stop??? Like I tell my kids, it has to stop somewhere. I don't go for the "well, he said it to me......" line. It HAS TO STOP somewhere. Just because it was said about Chelsea Clinton doesn't mean it should continue. By saying that, then by all means let's all start making crude jokes about the Obama girls. No, IT'S NOT RIGHT!!! As the saying goes, you're either part of the solution, or you're part of the problem. The only way to get this crap to stop is to actually do something about it.

I saw the "apology" on Letterman. It was very tongue-in-cheek. He tried to say he was referring to Bristol Palin, but, she was not the one that was with Gov. Palin in NYC. Also, on The View yesterday, Joye Behar (sp?) who is 99% an idiot, said it's OK in the name of of a joke. HUH??? She also tried to make a joke about how Cheney should take the Holocaust shooter and waterboard him. No one, and I mean NO ONE laughed, and she looked like an @$$.

Red face

Sorry but honestly while people will always make fun of all the the presidents and their wifes and so on and so forth, it is not right on any level to ever make jokes about their children, they are children and are innocent and whether you agree or disagree with how their parents are doing it should never reflect back on them with any jokes... it was in poor taste what Letterman said , I know he said he was sorry and I sincerely hope he was, but he did say it, however I do not hate him I have been watching him for years and I do like him . But the bottom line is he was wrong and so was Joy Behar again I like her but you must draw the line with certain topics and children and people who are disabled does not go well with me when making fun of them its not fun its disrespectful... Peace. Catherine

Jews vote for Democrats, not Republicans. They always have. They're as reliable a segment as blacks. So, one would be not so very stupid at all. The Republican vote consists of older white Southern males.

I actually agree with you. I just found it odd that the poster seemed surprised that a politician's child was the butt of a joke. It's been going on for a long time and our disgust probably won't change that much. Sad, but true.

Thumbs up

Erik von Brunn sent the following statement to ABC News.

Quote:
Statement by Erik von Brunn
Son of Accused Holocaust Shooter Issues Statement Concerning His Father
June 12, 2009

My father's beliefs have been a constant source of verbal and mental abuse my family has had to suffer with for many years. His views consumed him, and in doing so, not only destroyed his life, but destroyed our family and ruined our lives as well.

For a long time, I believed this was our family's cross to bear. Now, it is not only my families lives that are in shambles, but those who were directly affected by his actions; especially the family of Mr. Johns, who bravely sacrificed his life to stop my father.

I cannot express enough how deeply sorry I am it was Mr. Johns, and not my father who lost their life yesterday [Wednesday]. It was unjustified and unfair that he died, and while my condolences could never begin to offer appeasement, they, along with my remorse is all I have to give.

While my father had every right to believe what he did, by imposing those beliefs on others he robbed them of their free will. His actions have taken opportunities away from many people and forced decisions not expected, nor warranted, to be made that otherwise would not have been necessary.

For the extremists who believe my father is a hero: it is imperative you understand what he did was an act of cowardice. To physically force your beliefs onto others with violence is not brave, but bullying. Doing so only serves to prove how weak those beliefs are. It is simply desperation, reminiscent of a temper tantrum when a child cannot get his way. Violence is a cop out; an easy answer for an ignorant problem.

His actions have undermined your "movement," and strengthened the resistance against your cause. He should not be remembered as a brave man or a hero, but a coward unable to come to grips with the fact he threw his and his families lives away for an ideology that fostered sadness and anguish.
