WWYD? Constuction problems

What would you do?

We recently had our kitchen remodeled and had a small mud room constructed. One wall of the room is off by 3 inches (it's only about a 6 foot wall and it's off by that much). We have complained and were told that they would offer a credit to us. The amount has not been discussed yet. We were also told (by an employee) that by law we could have them redo the whole addition. Ugh.

Thanks for your input.

Have them redo it. You'll regret it if you don't.

They should redo it without any extra charges.

I always kick myself when I accept something that isn't right...especially something I'll have to look at every day. I'd get it done properly; there's really not a discount that would work in these kind of situations.

I have to agree with everyone else. I would have them redo it. You could run into major problems later on if it is not done properly. Does a code inforcement officer have to inspect the work? It may not pay code if it is off by that much...

We just finished a HUGE renovation of our entire first floor with a family room, garage, and wrap around porch addition and when something wasn't right we had them fix it. I agree with the above posters, have them fix it now so that it is right in the future. It will be a huge hassle, but worth it in the long run. Our front door was off by 1/4" and didn't sit right and it took over 2 months to have a new one sent out and re-installed.

I would have it fixed right - and right now. Talk to the contractor and if action doesn't begin within whatever you consider reasonable (1 to 2 weeks for me) then put it in writing. If they are reputable, they should want to fix this.

I am not a lawyer ( haha makes me think of those goofy ask gary commercials) however would think that they have violated the contract. Get it out and read it again. Be proactive.

If they fail you, have a contract lawyer review and send them a stern letter. You could always file a complaint with the state / city / county licensing entities as well.

I hope they listen, look, agree, and do the right thing.

op - were you able to get any resolution?

I hope you have started pursuing the contractor whether you decide to have it fixed, or take a financial amount.

Still nothing. DH and I are trying to clear up several other little things before we broach the subject again. One employee told us that he thought a $500 pay off would be fair, but the owner is thinking $200. I'm thinking $1000, if we don't have it redone. To muddy the waters, the owner is a busness client of DHs. That shouldn't matter, but we need to keep that in mind. Ugh.

What a mess! If possible, take the redo instead of the cash - and don't wait too long to settle this.

I would totally have them redo it. If it's wrong, it's wrong. You will regret it later if you don't.
