Home Repairs.....DIY or call someone else??

Do you or your DH/SO do home repairs? or do you call in someone else to do it??

We are pretty handy, but have, and thankfully know, our limits. I am happy to paint and DH can do some plumbing. The real "heavy" stuff, tho, we call the pros

Do you do your own or call someone in?

Since my dh has his own home building construction company with his dad and brothers he does all his own work or has his own men do the work. I know it can be very costly to call someone from the outside and then you have to worry about how reliable and trusting they are inside or outside your home. Good luck peace . Catherine

We have never called a repair person for a home project. DH is handy (thank goodness). In our last house he completed our entire basement on his own with the exception of his dad helping him hoist the drywall up to the ceiling. In our current house, he has torn out of backyard patio, fixed a bad water problem, dug a 7 foot trench along the outline of our house to waterproof the foundation (which the builder forgot to do), laid new pavers, built new deck stairs and many other projects. I am handy with a paint brush and have painted my parents house as well. Silly thing for me to pay for given I like to do it.

DH and my dad built the shop building out back and the deck around our above ground pool. We had a water leak between the meter and house which DH fixed. We do all inside and outside painting. DH and my dad roofed the first house we lived in. The roof on this house is too steep and we've had to have the roof replaced twice due to hail damage. DH has blown insulation into the attic twice. DH and/or my dad has replaced the garbage disposal and bathroom faucets. There's not much the two can't do together. The only other work we've had done was installing the replacement central heat and air last year. Oh, and carpet being put down. This last time though it was just in the bedrooms as DH had put down wood laminate in the dining room, living room and hall. DH is also a good wallpaper hanger with a little help from me.

The last few times DH has tried to "fix" something, it's has ended up costing us more.....It is very frustrating...We have a great 6 bedroom 3700 sq/ ft. house, , but no time or real money for maintenance. .Anyone want room and board in Virginia Beach (10 mins. from the ocean) in exchange for helping us do some landscaping, door replacing, painting, figuring out how to fix our settling house, drywalling etc, rotting front porch, or stair bannisters that are extremely loose, cutting out a wall and installing French doors, or for house-cleaning etc? Or any of the above. I am not kidding. We have room for a nice couple (and maybe even a small child or two) for a weekend, a few days, or maybe even a week., in a beautiful house, in a beautiful neighborhood, and we are on the lake. I will even feed you! .I know that sounds weird. I am not one to invite trouble into my home, as I have kids, but it's also a neat way to meet up w/ a fellow My Couponer face-to-face, and we could use some help too. We have kids ages 18, 15, 10, and 7. But they are pretty cool, and really laid back. I know this sounds insane---I cannot believe I am posting this, Any takers????

Dh fixes just about everything. After we bought our house, we found termites. Still trying to figure out how it passed inspection- because we the amount we found -it had to have been there when we bought it the year before we found the damage. DH has gutted and rebuilt 4 rooms in the house in the last 12 years. Some rooms including part of the roofing timbers. Takes alot longer for him to do it and it may not look as pretty as a professional but it works and that is all that counts with me.
He's also replaced windows, dishwashers, faucets, hot water heaters, dug out and put in a new leech field for the septic.

Thank goodness DH is handy. He fixes almost everything here -- plumbing, electricity, etc. It just takes him forever to get to it! We are currently working on hanging drywall in a stairwell. Yesterday, however, we did have to call Roto-Rooter to clean out a pipe in the basement bathroom.

I like to paint so I do all our interior painting. I'm always shocked at what people pay to have their home interiors painted. Holy Cow it's expensive!

My DH is very handy, too. He can fix most anything. He is also aware of his limits and will call someone if necessary.

You know all this work will take a lot longer than even a week?!? This sounds like at least a month. Maybe even 2 months.

Honey, this IS insane! You have children in your house and the risk you're taking is crazy. Saving money is nice but no amount of money is worth that risk. What if you find a taker - a bad one? Just because somebody is a My Coupons member doesn't make them sane. I think the last couple of days have been proof of that.

DH can fix anything - and I mean anything. We've never called out a repairman for anything in our 20 years of marriage and house ownership. I can think of only one or two times we had to have our cars fixed at a repair shop. And it wasn't because DH couldn't do it, it was because he either didn't have an engine lift so he couldn't get to what needed to be fixed or he didn't have the right tools and didn't know anyone he could borrow them from. You'd never know to look at him that he was so handy ~ he is tall and thin and doesn't look particularly strong. Even after this many years I'm still amazed at his ability to fix things!

Scott does most everything. He's a licensed plumber, and has experience doing construction, electrical and most anything else. The only time I have to call a repairman is for the A/C guy to add more coolant.
