Buying Gallons of Paint, Grrrrr

I called Sherwin Williams (the local paint store) this morning to order a gallon of paint and said I'd be in later this afternoon to pick it up.

When I went to pick it up after work and proceeded to pay for it, I noticed that it wasn't a full gallon but only 118 oz. Hmmmm, isn't a gallon 128 oz. My receipt says a gallon and that is what ordered. After doing the math, I figure I'm 10 oz shy and actually only have .92 of a gallon. The price is $46.99/gal and since I only received a partial gallon, my price should have only been $43.23

This makes me furious and I think tomorrow morning I'll be calling the State Attorney General to report this along with trying to contact customer service of corporate Sherwin Williams.

Alot of people say that government shouldn't be involved with things but when they aren't involved, corporate greed takes over and consumers get ripped off.

I looked at some leftover paint that I have from last summer and those cans are accurate at 1 gal/128 oz. So this has all taken place within the last 12 month.

Anyone that has bought paint/stain within the last 6 months or so, check out your cans and see if all companies are doing this or it's just Sherwin Williams.

Y a know, I noticed this a few weeks ago with Behr paint, too, so , No, SW is not the only ones doing it. I did not look on my receipt to compare if it rings up 1 gallon.

You have spurred me on to call behr, too, since all the brochures and such say how much paint, in gallons, to buy based on room size. NOW how do we figure out???

Wow. That stinks. I haven't painted in a while. My guess is that it's yet another downsizing and they haven't gotten around to change the computers.

I would be furious too because they aren't being truthful and accurate. Wanna bet when you bring this to their attention, it won't be anyone's fault and you will be the bad guy for knowing this, and daring to bring it to their attention?

Keep us updated on how this goes. I bet many here will now check their "gallons".

Figures!! Ice cream is what irritates me also. No longer half a gallon, it's only 1˝ qts. Now it takes 4 cartons of ice cream to equal what 3 used to. Do the manufacturers think the consumer doesn't notice this stuff??

When do you figure that the "gallon" of milk will be down-sized?

I just checked my Valspar and American Tradition cans that I have purchased witin the past few months. all of them state 3.785 liters - which is a gallon. I would definitely call Sherwin Williams and Behr.

I watched a television program on this not to long ago. Instead of companies raising prices, they are cutting the volume. One of the major peanut butter brands was sited as both containers were identical in size and shape. However they made the bubble on the bottom larger so they could put less product in and trick the consumer into thinking they were still purchasing the same amount. It is a very shady practice in my opinion.

I guess I missed something because I don't see what this post has to do with the OP's post or any other post made????

Anyway, I know we bought Behr last year and it was a gallon size (I am anal about checking this sorts of things). I do know LOTS of manufacturers are doing this but I don't think they can legally call it a gallon if it's not a gallon. I would complain

I just checked my Behr gallon of paint I bought a few weeks ago. It isn't a gallon! It's 116 oz., which is 12 oz. shy of a gallon. But on the top of the paint can, it says "gallon".

OK. So what do we do about this?

I just hung up the phone with the Ohio Attorney General's office. The gal took down all of the info and will be mailing me a form to fill out and return so they can proceed with the process.

I encourage each of you that has purchased paint lately to check and if you have been a victim of comsumer fraud to call your State Attorney General to report this.

How dare these companies get away with this.

Behr Paint

Hello All-

I work for the Behr brand and we want to ensure that each of our customers have all of their questions or concerns addressed. We would like to clarify this issue that has been pointed out as far as the label specifications.

Behr paint is made in 3 different bases: Ultra Pure White, Medium and Deep. These bases correspond to the depth of color that has been chosen. The Ultra Pure White paint is a full 1 gallon (128 oz) of paint as stated on the label. This gallon container can have up to 2 oz of tint (colorant) to be added in order to create the specified color, making this a total of 130 oz. The Medium Base is 120oz. as seen on the label, allowing for up to 10oz. of tint to fit into the 130oz. container. Finally, the deep base is 116oz. according the label allowing up to 14oz. of tint to fit into the container.

Hope this helps with any confusion the label may have caused.

Thanks,

e-behr

Allinaugust –

The Interior Pastel Base has actually been discontinued, as our line has been consolidated into 3 bases. However, the Pastel Base has up to 8oz of colorant mixed into the container making this 130oz. as well.

Thanks,

"i work for the Behr brand " I got the impression that the poster was a regular poster here and works for the behr brand and logged in with a new name and answered the questions.
Maybe I am wrong...
